Burry and Kevin had XX. Also interested to know what Knox had. Did a bad gear choice lose the race? As bad as using silly light tyres and puncturing like Burry did at Attakwas.

In every sport the top guys have mutual respect for each other and the preparation which is done to get there.  There is almost an unwritten code that you look out for each other against less dedicated or prepared athletes.  Hitting  a guy when he has had a spot of bad luck (not self inflicted - note) may undermine that respect and get you thrown out of that very select club.  Nobody likes a guy that gets a kick out of other people's misfortune.

 

KE was just playing by these rules.  In the next race when it happens to him, the guy he is racing against will return the favour.

We should only give the ol' Aussie another go if he got tackled by a spectator.  If you fall due to your own stupidity you should be left behind, but to attack when someone falls because of an outside force is just not cricket...or rugby or cycling.  There are much better ways to show your 'killer instinct' during a race

It was just the right thing to do, kind of how MTB used to be, see a bloke take a tumble and at least make sure he is ok, it should not be a big surprise! Both of them area also not taking the series as a major priority for their seasons so why not thrill the crowds and get some added exposure.

 

As for the 2 gear thing it was not meant to be taken literally and technically, Max just attacked hard and at a higher level, they could not respond to his move Had nothing to do with gears as the second climb (on 45k) was a much friendlier gradient than the 75k one.

Interesting remarks. The top 5 riders at the MTN Attakwas and Barberton all used Sram XX. Max was the only guy in the top 10 on a hardtail though and his bike was almost 1.5kg lighter.
