Jason' date=' how do you get to do a 20min interval???

[/quote'] I suffer, struggle and at the end of the session I feel like puking! Dead I don't do 20 minutes at 95% of max. I do the 20 minutes at 85% - 90% of my max. I did these sessions again today but didn't feel to good Confused. Must of been the Kudu biltong I had earlier today. Anyway...

My first 20 minutes my HR average was 157bpm which is 83% of my max and my average power was 260W.

The second 20 minutes I averaged 160bpm (85%) of my max and my average power was 254W (Suffering, while watching Robbie almost win Clap, I was pretending to lead him out Big%20smile).

I'm new to power so I don't know or can't read to much in to this but I'll maybe learn one day Embarrassed. I'm currently using my girlfriends (Michelle) PowerTap as it's just lying collecting dust.

Dick I have a few sessions that I work off... I also do 4 x 5min intervals with 3 minutes rest between each interval. I try and keep my HR between 90 - 95% of my max during the intervals and I usually average between 270 - 300W for the 5 minutes. Tomorrow I have a very very easy day and the Friday I rest and over the weekend I'm ready for LSD or if theres a race... then it's hang in for dear life. Smile

How long you been riding for?

Jason - all that was happening was that you were over heating.

Get a fan and watch the difference in sustainable power.

LOL... Ai ai.

BikeMax, it's weird. I was on the trainer warming up. I do a 15 minute warm up and 5 minutes in to the warm up I was sweating (bubbles on my arms). My hearts at 85bpm and it's not like I'm getting hot... I feel pretty fresh but I just sweat... I'm scared to put the fan on cause it will be like rain inside the house. It's weird.

Gathering dust hmm? I rode with it yesterday Tongue  I look this afternoon & my poor bikes lying there without a rear wheel Stern%20Smile

Aren't some people more prone to sweating?  I'm sure I remember 101% saying he was the same on the IDT... something about needing buckets & mops after a hard session... LOL

Try putting the fan on just as you start sweating - and play with the distance from you to keep form feeling chilled.

If you are sweating - then you are getting hot.

Last week I tried to do intervals, total time 50mins. 6 x 1 minute intervals at average HR of 170 per interval at average cadence of 98 rpm with 4 mins rest between and warm up and cool down at HR 150.

Tonight was feeling mif but still tried to do 2 x 5 min intervals at HR average 180, cadence average 62. could only do 2 x in the 60 mins.

No idea what this all means, as i still get blown off the back on climbs.

OK 96kg does not help.

Dick - climbing is all about threshold power, and to improve threshold power you are best off doing longer intervals such as the 2 x 20 @ 85-90% MHR rather than the 1 or 5 min intervals at this stage.

Try starting with 2 x 12 or 15 and build from there - your climbing will improve.

The whole power thing is just a new Yuppie fad. I cannot see any improvement in Elite cyclsits over what they were previously. All that they now have is a new toy to brag about and prove that their skinny legs does have muscles.
...and then you get those that are jealous and become suur-tiete like me and I suppose you oom H.

It's training technology advancing like Lotus/Domino 6/7/8 from Lotus 1-2-3. Remeber you also got the latest PDA... is that not considered being yuppie? You were asking everyone on the HUB how to use it right?

I say if the okes got R5k - R25k to blow on a power meter, let them. I do think this is the way to go wrt to training in cycling. I can't recall a pro still using HR as a method to train. I still do, but that's just because I don't have the moola to buy a power meter yet. Cry

Well I suppose you are right. I cycle for fun..... not becuase I want to prove anything. I know I am not a "typical" cyclist, I am the typical retired prop forward. Cycling is just not my core business and I am sedentary when compared to some that can power the Bronx in a power cut. I would much rather spend my munny on cameras, computers, PDA's and the such. Hell I even have a HRM that record the cadence AND profile of the route. I suppose I do not have to prove how strong I am, I am happily married, have two grownup kids your age, jobless and happy.

I still think powermeters mounted on the drivetrain is a passing FAD and will be replaced by the new saddle being developed by Selle San Tortono. It has a gel encased load cell that sends wireless messages to a unit on your handlebars. They discovered through rigorous testing that the amount of grip you exert on the saddle can be converted to energy output. They reckon by using a empiric formula encoded on the chip they use that they can give much better and accurate readout than all of the powermeters currently on the market. They reckon they will have the majority share of the market investing in their new and exiting product. the first saddles that weighs 185 grams made with carbon fibre and titanium rails with the load cell and handlebar unit should arrive in South Africa within the next three to five weeks. The unit is easy to use, no calibration needed. You fit the new saddle, switch on the load cell, fit the handlebar unit and off you go.

Been thinking some more about the fan debate and the effect on power levels.

If you have a fan blowing at you hard from the front, your power reading will go up for the same effort, as your bod is operating more comfortably.  However, your speed will go down for that same effort as you're now battling a headwind?smiley5.gif
Posted

You're not battling the head wind. Your speed has nothing to do with the wind blowing against you. They're 2 unrelated variables. Unlike when actually riding your bike the faster you go the more the wind blows against you

Posted

You mean riding into a fan wind on your IDT doesn't affect your speed?

Next you'll be telling me that switching to a lighter carbon frame on the trainer makes no difference to performance.

Thyolo: Just put the fan behind & you'll be getting a tailwind LOL LOL

101%:  I usually add a pinch of salt & a teaspoon of glucose into Jason's post workout smoothies (soy protein Dead, banana, yoghurt, a teaspoon of glutamine & crushed ice)... it helps replenish anything lost during the ride. Wink  It might help...

I like EAS Betagen HP mixed into some fruity flavoured whey protein isolate (I can't take the taste of soy).  Betagen contains some creatine which is a little "controversial" for endurance athletes, but I find that it helps with my muscle recovery & I have yet to experience cramping from it.
