Phil and Paul- Clueless about power and wattage??

I noticed Phil Ligget and Paul Sherwen seem to know nothing about power output and wattage. During today's stage Paul commented that going at 200watts is easy, bearing in mind that sprinters like Tom Boonen and Mcewen do 600-1000 watts in a sprint...

No you guys are sadly mistaken. Boonen does almost 2000watts. 200 is easy, I know, I was actually just quoting what he said.

Apparently the wattages at the end of a stage are around 1600 - 1800.  Track riders get quite a bit higher, but then they don't ride 200+ kays before their sprint!

have to agree - 200W is easy even in my book...

1000W plus and probably for 30s plus - now that is something else!

1000watts+ for 30secs is very very hard, I can only manage 985... Almost there!!!

I think you are all wrong.

Tom Boonen pushes out about 20 000 watts (with each leg) and has been know to rip his cranks off his BB and often tears the spokes from his wheels when he kicks.Clap

depends on for how long... I'm sure I could produce about 600w for maybe 10s... If I could keep it up for an hour I would be a world beater.

For the power guru guys... If I AVERAGED 200w for a race like the argus, spending a lot of the time in the slipstream what kind of time would I be looking at?? assume no wind and I weigh 80kg incl bike, clothing helmet etc.  4 hrs, 3.5, under 3??

There was a guy called Jonathan, that had a webpage where you could have your Argus statisticts calculated a few years ago. If I remember correctly, a 4hr Argus would have required an average of 160 watts for me, with about the same conditions you describe. But I may not be remembering correctly and cannot find the info anymore.

GeekJust consulted a pro - during the 1st 150k or so of yesterdays tour stage - about 150watts. On flat parts of last 50k about 350 watts with pacesetters about 400. Sprinters from 1200 to 1800 for about 10 secs!

It also depends if you're on a indoor trainer or out on the road. I'm not a power GURU but lately I'm really in to the whole power thing.

I've been doing some interval training with Michelle's PowerTap and to maintain 300W on the indoor for 5 minutes is pretty tough. I'm at 90% of my max when I do these sessions Embarrassed.

On the road I find it easier to maintain 300W and 200W on the road is pretty easy but then on the indoor  trainer you have to work a bit to keep the 200W if you having a lighter session.

Today I'll be doing 2x20mins and will be using the PowerTap again Thumbs%20Up. Last time I maintained 270W for 20 minutes and then 260 something for the 2nd 20mins and this at a HR of 80-85% of my max Dead

I don't have a program so this is just my own thing I do so don't slander my k@k way of training Tongue

Thanks Jason, you've made a happy man very old*

I've got a power reading on the IDT and 240w is hard work - 85% or so.  Your no.s are not so far from mine so I feel better now.

*Or is that "an old man very happy?"
