Got new EASTON EA70 wheels in Dec 2009.  Done about 2500 km.  I have  notice this marks on front and back rims (all around rim).   Have anybody seen this before.  What can it be.  Agent had a look at it, so far no reply (3 weeks).

You in the Cape, it is the wind sandblasting your wheels!


Could be something in the manufacturing process that is now going wrong? Maybe the anodizing? Or something to do with the paint?

looks like microcracking in the anodizing with some corrosion coming through. Seems like you may have some corrosion on the nipple too.

 

 

 

Being near the sea corrosion is something one lives with, but I would certainly not be happy with that...interested to hear what the agents say.

Sorry guys, I didn't hear my phone ring.

 

That them cracks are called "crazing" - little microcracks as someone mentioned. Anodising is a layer of ceramic (glass-like and very, very hard) that half penetrates, half sits on top of the aluminium.

 

If the alu is stressed, the anodising will crack, thus what you're seeing there is stressed aluminium. It sounds serious but all wheels with adequate spoke tension are stressed big time - more than me at month-end when the bills are due.

 

It is the first time I've noticed such crazing all over the rim, usually it is only present at the spoke holes where the spoke pulles the rim into a dimple. However, it is not serious and those cracks won't propagate into the rim.

 

If you are aware of anodising's behaviour, you'll notice that type of crazing in all sorts of aluminium - architectural fittings (windows mostly) and zillions of other anodised parts, none of which I can remember now.

 

Don't hold your breath on the agent's explanation though. It may not be forthcoming and if it is, aag nevermind. If you have an eye for such things, you may care that the little crack lines are an indication of the stress lines.

 

I have huge respect for Easton wheels. Easton has the right approach to wheels. Unfortunately the local agent will not sell you a replacement rim and will insist on doing the job themselves, in Cape Town.

 

I now routinely repair Easton wheels with other rims. Life is too short to send stuff down to Cape Town and have some unknown faceless individual work on your wheels.

Corroded nipples...... now THAT is serious!!!!!! Try putting vaseline on it, if that does not help get a cycling vest made of silk and if that does not help put some elastoplast on it.
