Hi

While I was climbing a long mountain pass this weekend during the Kat Classic MTB race, I was thinking, what would make more of a difference to climbing.

My bike losing 2kg's, or me losing 2kg's? ( not that I could get my Anthem down to 9kg in a hurry on my limited budget)

I weigh 83 and my Anthem X1 is probably about +/- 11kg

  • Lose weight through training;
  • Start your climbs slower,  gradually gear down and finish them and over the top, stronger - this is the secret to faster climbing.
Most cyclists try to stay with faster riders at the beginning of a climb but most are overcooking it. So you eventually catch most of the guys - trust me.

Good luck!

All else being equal, from a performance point-of-view it does not make a significant difference where you lose the weight.

Where you may run into problems with losing body weight is that you may lose some power if you lose muscle together with fat.

Hi

On the issue around body weight. Surely the physiology of a person would determine whether they will be a  good cyclist or not. I'm 1.87m tall and if I allow my body weight to drop below 77kg I will look ridiculous

So your height really determines how much weight you could  afford to lose. I've noticed quite a few of the elites weighing <70kg

Was wandering whether any cyclist has done a sub 3 Argus weighing > 80kg

True. Look at what Magnus Backstedt was weighing. He was just shy of 2m tall and weighed 97kg and he was a mean racer.

you must look like a stick. I'm 1.8 and between 77 and 78 and I think I'm starting to get to the too thin side. Already had to buy a whole new wardrobe after dropping from 85kg since the beginning of the year.

Echoing Mapara's sentiments, geez you must be pretty lean. I dropped to my lowes weight in 15 years for this years Argus at 81kg.

My freinds and family thought I looked anorexic LOL

I think that about 185cm and 77-80 kg is pretty chunky

Lightweight rowers have to have a crew average of 70kg and no one more than 72.5.

i'm 1.86 and weigh 64. i look like a matchstick with the wood scraped off. last year i weighed 69 and struggled to stay in front on the climbs. Im finding it much easier now that im 5kg lighter

look at some of the top climbers. what do any of the top sv/elite guys weigh?

But those guys(rowers) are like 5ft tall. Im 1.76 and 70-72kgs, and i feel a bit thin.

For the original post, i lost weight and felt a big difference on climbs, then dropped about the same amount of weight on my bike and felt a bigger difference. I think the wheels made the difference although the non moving parts(fork, stem, bars, ect.) felt the same as losing body weight. Hope that helps.
