1kTT I am happy you're alright.

However I hope the only reason you will not be doing much biking is while you wait for the insurance co to pay out.

If you want to quit becuase of the experiance well I have a harsh speech prepared just for that :)

I dont want to quit' date=' I love riding too much.

I just cant see myself mtbing anywhere around JHB North anytime soon. It just wont be any fun thinking that round any bend you could have a gun at your head. sad but true.[/quote']

.

Even though i can fully understand what your going through, I was shot at a couple of time by a ex cop that went bonkers in the northern cape, the chap decided to go on a rampage and shoot up 13 people. (lucky for me he missed and i just ended up with a hole in my jersey and shrapnell from when the bullet hit the brick behind me.

To not ride again would simply be a defeatest attitude (harsh i know and sorry for saying this) And even though I am from the cape where things are a little more chilled. You have more of a chance getting killed in your home, or hijacked in JHB than you have of running into bike thieves.

So chin up mate, do what you love and f@#ck these guys, dont let them govern how you live your life.

I like this thread' date=' again what does the CSA fatcats say about this the organization which should take the lead here.[/quote']

A while back they interviewed the new CEO of CSA, when posed the question on how he intends going about doing the job all he mentioned was more effort in gearing up our top riders and how he was looking forward to the upcomming Jhb2C. Diddly squat on cycling safety which is becoming number 1 priority and other issues such as lic.

I can honestly tell you that there was absolutely no chance to use a gun (nobody was carrying one) it all happens too quickly and there are too many variables and people around to get caught in the crossfire. I cant see pepper spray being of any use either other than to escalate the situation.

And had you had a firearm and being unable to use it, that would be one more firearm for them to use in future.

Why should cycling safety be the responsibility of CSA???  CSA is the organisation responsible for organising RACING in SA, not a general body representing cyclists in SA.  Big difference

.

Simple if they dont intervene at the rate its going nobody is going to want to race in SA.

But your right willehond, their constitution neglects to mention the word cyclist saftey even once.

Everyone loves an organization that cares Pig

You can't fight armed criminals with sweet talk and put them in jail. And the SAPS (Serve and Protect the criminals) won't do anything because they themselves are probably involved. But ya, I don't see anything happening soon. Welcome to the new South Africa. The removal of my previous post just said that we are gonna accept and carry on!Angry

Majority of cyclists fall into the expense bracket but it appears bulk of our money goes to the cash cow.

Hi All

Obviously a heated topic, and I have recently been a victim myself. Maybe it would be wise to get Carte Blanche involved, as this would not only raise awareness to fellow cyclists, if they are not aware already, but as they are an

investigational programme, therefore  in their best interests to get to the bottom of issues. It would no doubt make good viewing, and hopefully lift the lid on where our prized possesions end up, at the same time get some answers from SAPS stations, and there personal as to what exactly they get paid for?

I feel that we are being held hostage by criminals, and while there is a thriving stolen bike market, these incidents will only increase, these stolen bikes are not been stolen for private use, but rather for financial gain, therefore should be easier to find, as sooner or later will be advertised to the pulic, either as a complete bike, or stripped down components.

While I agree with trying to protect oneself, just don't let a rush of blood to the head, put yourself or others in your group at risk, and believe you me when you are attacked you will not have time to undo a backpack or anywhere else to access your weapon.

Just my two cents worth, but if anyone agrees with me, and has contacts, lets use them.

MTB HIJACKING
I am sure that everyone of you is as concerned about the escalating problem of bike-jackings as we are.
There are several plans and schemes in place to try and curb the problem, move it away from your own door-step, recover bikes and many more. I think we need to co-ordinate our efforts and get rid of the problem once and for all. A great deal of good work has been done already and this must not be discarded or neglected however I would like us all together and begin to resolve this crime spree that is going unchecked and unnoticed.

Thanks to Mark Thjis, we have started to get this problem out to the media and tomorrow at 6:45 I will be on 702 on the John Robbie show presenting our problem and our desire to help resolve the problem with the local communities.

But we need to meet and discuss the problem, so
Date: Wednesday, 12th May 7pm (late but I want to maximise the numbers).
Place: Primmi Design Quarter, upstairs. Design Quarter is in Nicol Grove, off William Nicol, close to Monte Casino.
Format: Semi- Formal, meeting with structure and an agenda (will be sent but please forward me any agenda items for consideration.
Who: Addressees (Clubs, CGC, CSA, MTBers) but please invite anyone else relevant to the cause
Topics: Safe route for all, community help and involvement, Prevention, Detection, Recovery, registers ?..(examples).

Please do everything in your power to attend or send a PROXY

Myself and a friend went MTB'ing in the open veld between the M18 to olifantsfontein and the R21 this past Saturday. On a good day you can clock up to 65km, it is absolutely awesome. However, we fell victim to a trio of thuggs that carefully created an ambush. We were chasing down a single track that originates from between the two koppies and ends up at the corner of the concrete works a bit behind the Irene train station. You cannot see clearly around the corner and the next thing the three aholes jumps in font of us pulling knives. We also had pepper spray, but what can you do, all you see is the knife. We were so quickly surrounded, you just co-operate to ensure that the pointy end of the knife does not enter your flesh. No MTB is worth leaving my family fatherless. My only fear is that if there is no remedy for the situation, safe trails will dissappear.
