Well, I thought I was ready for the 75km. I made a BIG mistake in deciding to make the Monster my first race. I got caught up at the back and wound up doing the Monster, but I only got down the Breedts Nek pass at about 12:50. I still had 10km to go to the 1pm 50km cut off point and I had a puncture so I called it quits!  Next year I will be back! But I did learn the following important things:

1. Don't get stuck at the back and dont move over for every person trying to pass you (amazing how many people want to overtake and then go slower than you were anyway once they are past you!).
2. Don't just train for distance, also train to push your bke and to carry your bike (did not do enough of that, and there were points where even if you could ride, you couldn't because of the volume of people).
3. Warm up properly so you can make some distance up before the 45km riders come up your ass, they know they have only 45km to do so they are shifting.

My only gripe about the whole event was arriving, wanting to go for a pee before the start of the race, standing in a queue for the bogs and some girls pushed in front of the queue with the excuse that the 'are racing now'. I wonder what those same stupid, iill mannered muppets thought the rest of us were doing in our cycling gear?!
Looking forward to the 2011 Monster...

I did the 45km after a 3 years lay off....went much better this time around, but this remains THE TOUGHEST race!!! My opinion...I agree with KiNgL...the only place you can rest is during the uphills smiley29.gif. I must however commend the organisers, the Bokomo (Pro Nutro) breakfast corner was a WINNER!! and the water tables had what one was looking for, either water or a snack (banana or Bokomo bar) and something sweet in the line like Pepsi!! One thing is sure, I have not pushed/carried my bike for such long periods. WHEN ARE THE RESULTS OUT???? Andrew Mclean came past me on that incredible downhill 10k's from the finish. The oke is an ANIMAL!! I'll be back next year... smiley32.gif

My Magalies postmortem

I entered the 45km route and I have to say it was brilliant! This was a real M.T.B. route and not the ordinary ?grondpaaie? most other events have. The climbs was technical but rideable and the decent ? hair-raising!.

I rode well until about 20km into the race when I got a puncture. Tip no. 1 - When you are running tubeless, be sure to check the amount of sealant in you tyre!. I didn?t and the tyre didn?t want to seal. It took me about 20min to fix this puncture because the sides of the tyre got stuck to each other. What a bloody mess. Eventually I got it fixed but 1km from there I puncture the tube. Second tip. Before a race, check that your puncture repair kit is in order. I didn?t (once again) and found that my solution was dry. Luckily m.t.b.?rs are the friendliest people around and two gents stopped and helped me. Then after about 5km the 3rd puncture happened. By this time I was so pi$$ed off I almost ate the bike. Then two dudes stopped again and luckily one sold his spare tube to me. Best R50 ever spent.

From here I took it easy. Chatting to all the people on the route and at the water points. I was once again reminded why I started with m.t.b. ing. It was an absolute blast! Sometimes when you are racing an event, you forget how great the ?gees? and people are at the back. I got stuck behind the same big lady on a bike 3 times in the last 20km because I stopped and chatted at the 2 last water points. The people at the water points doest always get the recognition they deserve! Thank to you peeps.

Thank you to no 436 for assisting with the second puncture and Mr 330 for selling me your tube. You are both legends! Thanks to the water point people and to all having a blast with me at the back of the field. The Magalies Mini Monster is now my favorite route, EVER!

Finished time ? 3:45
Ride Time ? 2:44 ( I wasted a bloody hour fixing punctures) still worth it!

+1 on it being tough....I agree on the descents....I nearly saw my behind a good couple of times, the portage was also tough especially with two bikes on your shoulder but that is a whole different story. Loved the sections were you travel on that pipe / thin concrete bridge thing over the forrest drop.

Great event, great route, they will defnitely see me again next year Thumbs%20Up

The route changes were great. The 45km had a bit more single track. By the time we got to the damp areas, the 75km riders had turned it into a mud pool with no way around it. But it was fun. I was very happy when they got the distance wrong with about 2km!

Nice race, a bit rocky here and there, but otherwise OK. The sad part is that I lost my Camelbak insulated waterbottle at around 20km mark (just after the waterpoint I assume), anybody perhaps picked it up?

Did the 70 km... Did it with my brother until Breedsnek, when I took a

tumble on the downhill. He rode on while I got patched up. Did finish

the race. Spend way to much time walking... http://www.cyclenation.co.za/components/com_kunena/template/default_ex/images/english/emoticons/emoticon_laughing.gif Was not

impressed with the youngsters on the 45 km course taking risks and not taking

others people/and there own safety in consideration. Will do the 45 km

next year, maybe...
