I am buying a complete bike from a distributor. the bike will cost me 4500Euros. I have asked the distributor to strip the bike and ship as seperate items

 

what will my total cost be on duites and VAT?

If the invoice lists the parts you are buying 14% VAT, no duty, an admin fee for charging you VAT. The 14% VAT will be worked out on the SARS official exchange rate on the day your parts ship. In round figures R6,850.

 

If the invoice says "1 complete bike" you can add 20% duty (even if stripped) and then add an additional 10% to the cost plus duty to work out the 14% VAT. In round figures R18,750.

 

So get the invoice to reflect parts, not a bike. Huge difference.

It's to protect our fragile textile industry from the Chinese (some would say from itself).

WOULD BE INTERESTING TO SEE OUR SHOE INDUSTRY MAKING A PAIR OF CYCLING SHOES WITH THE SAME QUALITY AS SIDI,OR HAVE CERTAIN BIKE SHOPS MABYE HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH THIS...JUST SAYING

what extra import duties would i have to pay on a wheelset that i buy from CRC?

 

wheels are duty free.....just VAT at 15.4% (dont ask why just accept it :) )

@#$, DHL just sent me an invoice with both CD (customs duties) and VAT amounts of about 15% each on a set of cranks and chainring.

 

Have queried it with them, but it really annoys me that they get it wrong in the first place. Surely they do this stuff all the time and shouldn't be making these kinds of mistakes? a R1k bill on R3.4k worth of cranks would be lunacy.
