Bike Computers? Aaaaaargh!

Do the Chinese children who make cycle computers purposely saboutage them? Or is it "planned obsolesence"? Granted, I do buy cheapies, but I've gone through 1 Ryder Razor and 1 Blackburn Atom and haven't even covered 1000km: after 400km's or so, all I get is 0km/h when I spin the wheel.

 

Is there anything out there that actually works, or do I have to get one of these again ...

CATEYE CATEYE CATEYE i've managed to clocke my Cateye astrale 8 twice 20 000km and still going strong very occasional error on average speed but reset sorts it out

Never a problem with my Cateye Astrale 8 either. 3000km of abuse and still going strong.

Garmin Edge 500. Have used Cateye, Polar and Topeak - Garmin outdoes them all

If all you get is 0 km/h then the likely culprits are:

1. Magnet too far from sensor. If you move the magnet past the sensor, if you are in a very quiet room you should hear the reed switch clicking across.

 

2. Broken wire. This happened to me once after I stacked a MTB.

 

I've had a cheapy once that lasted forever.

 

Other than that, Sigma always worked well for me before I went Polar.

Thanks all! I'll check these out - I see major $$$ ahead, as usual (the bikes are costing me about 4X as much as the car these days!)

I've used Cat Eye with no problems, recently I've move to Blackburn - no problems either.

 

Think there was a Cat Eye in the For Sale section for a good price.

Whatever you do.. DO NOT buy a garmin edge 305.... with tears in my eyes i cry.... the little chinese children were starving and cold the day they assembled the 305's....

Cheap cateye velo 8 - no problems in almost 2 years (it did reset the odometer once when I dropped it though)
