D2D

IMO the climb from Kareekloof up to the top is overated (but only when starting at the Kareekloof entrance). It's a different thing all together having already done the full lap.

I train on the Kromdraai route every weekend. It's TOUGH. Just because there are no (supposedly) long climbs it doesn't sound that impressive. The climb to the finish from Cosmo City to the Dome must be 4km. The climb going out past Toadbury onto kromdraai where you carry on climbing, must be 3km before levelling out for 1km and then climbing for another kay. Then you have about another 5 climbs, none insignificant, before the run into the Rhino and Lion Park. It is a race of continuous climbing and your recovery is not long. I raced Harties last week in 2h37 and decided that D2D was too much for me this early in the season.

buckstopper, very true.  Might be why I'm a bit biased towards the R4V.  Some of my training rides are Alberton - Suikerbos - Loop Suikerbos (whether short or long) - steppes and back.

Disagree. Trace 10km back from the dome and then check out the climbs. Very underrated. The Klipriver climb may be 5km but it's not that steep. After climbing that hill my 12 year old son still had enough in his legs in the 60km race at last years r4v to outsprint me

The R4V requires real effort only at Suikerbos and at the end up Kliprivier. D2D has no really "big" hills but they are continuous from 5km out and sap the power in your legs

The elites are lucky enough to start races before the wind picks up and the sun starts beating down. Surely that also helps them, even though they are in a totally different class.

I'd rather have the sun and the wind than ride in the rain like last yearConfusedConfusedConfusedConfusedConfused

True fees, and it should incourage us "phlebs" to improve our seedings and start earlier.

Hence that is why I am doing all these races now cos I don't want to start late and suffer in the african heat. if only they would sort that bloody seeding out. Sitting at 24 and should be 18..

Just wondering does anyone :-

A) Train differently before a race depending on your 'perceived' toughness of it?

B) Change your preparation in the week/days before a 'tough' race i.e. taper more, up the carbo loading etc.

Personally I don't but just thinking ............................

Ok then my perceived thinking that the R4V is harder is cause i was not peddling hard enough on the D2D.
