I just make it clear that the first person to give me the money gets the product.

Been burn't before where someone has said they are definitely taking something so you hold it for them for a day or two, tell other people its no longer available and then the person turns around and says they aren't taking it. Not just strangers, but a good friend as well.

Luckily with my most recent sale, I had to tell someone that the bike was no longer for sale as someone else had said they would put the money into my account and the guy need to know that day as he was looking at another bike as well. Then the guy who was going to put money into my account didn't put it in when expected. In the end if worked out well as the money was paid, although a week and a half later. But, had the guy turned around and said he was no longer interested, or never paid the money I would have lost out on another sale.

Its no fun for the seller to have to tell someone that something has been sold. If you are interested in something, then make sure you see it asap and pay the money asap. Its not fair to expect the seller to hold onto it for you.

There are two sides to the story, but if you agree a time and place to meet someone, at least have the decency to honour that agreement first!

I think if a seller posts something, first come, first serve. Seller should respond as soon as possible for new posts. Bumped posts could take a longer time to reply. If the buyer does not reply within 24hours, then he forfeits the sale and its up for grabs again. Once you set a price (seller and buyer) stick to it. I reckon the buyer should always pay postage, seeing as the seller already needs the money. Not shure how the rest of you feel, but I recon also that money should be transferred always before product is posted. And Im no angel, Ive also inquired and then dropped the sale without notice. But I recon a general 24hour rule is manageble and fair. My 2c.

on a scale of 1 to 10, with:

1 being total scam and stealing money without anything in return and then disappearing

10 being a perfect sale, with both parties happy.

this is like a 5.

he sold it to a friend, so helped him out.

got a guaranteed sale, and guaranteed money before you could.

and he let you know that he cancelled.

you missed out on a good deal, but he didn't waste more than 10 minutes of your time.

i'm not saying what he did is right, but i understand what his thinking was. that's why it is a 5. get over it, pm to tell him you're disappointed but no need to really air it here.

I think there will always be a grey area on this issue - Its unfortunate and not the best business practise from the buyer to just leave a seller hanging if they have agreed to buy something. That said, at the end of the day its not like the seller has lost out on anything really. Someone else will more then likely come along. Its not really anything to gvet your knickers to much in knot about.

Who do you sell to?

1) A guy that says dibs keep it for me

OR

2) The guy standing next to you with the money?

If the guy merely said dibs on the thread, then I'd ignore it. If he PM'ed me I'd reply and say: make a firm decision by xx:xx specific time or lose out. If he gave me a cell number or email I'd use that to make the request.

I would also tell the guy with the cash that someone else has made an unconfirmed offer, but that I will have a definite answer by xx:xx.

I will name and shame - SPACEMAN!!!!!

He advertised something on the Hub (an extension unit for a handlebar). I called him up, we agreed a price, I paid the money into his account via EFT and he NEVER SENT IT. I have sent him numerous queries and he does not respond.

I was going to ignore it as it was only R50 but the principle is an issue!!!

Steal R50 from every hubber and you will become very rich...get your R50 back!

Hmm, had a similar issue but not on the hub. Put a deposit down on a car recently, when I called later in the week to confirm I had secured finance I was told "It's sold already, the driver collects on the weekend"

Needless to say I wasn't impressed and had to go there and stand over them to make sure my money was paid back into my account.

Can understand the op's frustration!
