I fully agree. Technical sections I clip out and ride on the flat pedal and I feel a LOT more confident because of it, because I know my feet aren't gonna cause a sore knee or elbow :)

I feel more in control clipped in. More guys fall because they are overcautious.

Everyone seems to like the pedals as they have a larger contact area, but how does that work if you have a rigid mtb shoe ?

Does it just disperse pressure better or does more of the shoe actually contact the pedal ?

Also those that said eggies were too floaty or tight, did you try swopping cleats to alter the release angle ?

New eggies should also last longer as they have a new bearing/bushing setup :)

my eggbeaters don't clip in or out, well it doesn't feel that way anymore.

They're just in or out, whatever is needed at the time.

I put my foot down on the pedal and then sometimes wonder if I'm clipped in, then do a bit of a pull on the pedal and yep I'm in.

I use candy's

Shimano did not have to revamp the bearing/bushes to get the pedals to last longer...

You have a point, but atleast CB fixes it if its broke. They could just have left it like that and make $ from the rebuild kits

I agree 100%, when my feet is clipped in I can turn the rear end easier, have more control and make the bike do what I want it to do...

Have had the fortune of using Shimano XT, XTR, Time Atac, Time Z-Control, CB Ti Eggbeater, regular CB Eggbeater, CB Candy and CB Mallet. Unfortunately not Looks.

My 2c:

  •
  • Eggbeaters are phenomenal for the first season. If you ride hard or race they go for a bucket of sh!t. And they chew your shoes... unless you're willing to spend even more on the special plate.
  • Shimano are indestructible. But not the lightest nor the best feel.
  • Time have the best feel and are less durable than Shimano but last (at least) three times as long as Eggbeaters.

My Time Atacs (on my Cannondale Carbon Scalpel) are two years old and had to put them after 9 months of using Eggbeaters that came stock with the bike. I have Time Z-Control on my DH bike and they are also rock solid and yet easy to step out of if you need to drag a foot to corner.

What about no clips, simply just flats? For technical single track get rid of the damn clips for the most liberating ride of your life. Try it some time and THINK ABOUT IT. Dont come with this cods wollop of push and pull..next time you ride think about whether you are realy "pulling". Unless your out the saddle you are not realy pulling are you?

Push the envelope because you know when you come of you can bail and you have much more confidence for drop offs etc. Now days I ride everything on my good old tackies and leave the clips for my road riding sesions.

I have had from the most expensive to the cheapest, my humble opinion.....the cheapest Shimano MTB pedals(520's)..........they work and you don't feel you are glued to the bike like some of the more expensive jobs make you feel like. But then again this is from the mouth of someone that has never won a race , but also never intend trying to win one either...........Sjoe I am so relieved I don't make a living from cyling.

Crankbrothers Candy !

I have a set of LOOK, SPD and Candy.

Used SPD for 10 years, LOOK for a couple of months - now a CANDY fan for past year.

SPD last longest, are very tough, but mud and dust in your shoe cleat or the pedal = fall time.

Crankbrothers Candy - easy in - easy out, push down,or slide forward or slide back to engage. plus - has a platform for more support.

Still have a set of SPD shoes and pedals on my general (mostly road commute) m-bike - and work fine only because they don't get full of mud or hard pack dirt.
