I want to save weight.

My ritchey WCS is much longer than needed. Can I cut it or will there be consequences? How should it be cut?

Any spare lenght regulations?

Hang on...........we pay a fortune for carbon parts because they are light and then go an cut them to make them lighter.

If carbon is so light, how much weight will you save by cutting a piece of it off?

Leave it as it is, one day you may want to sell it.

You can cut it so that it is about 100mm below the opening of the seat tube. Or just measure where the "limit" mark is now, see how far you insert it to be comfortable, measure the same amount as previously measured and cut there. To cut you can use fine toothed metal saw. Wrap some masking tape where you want to cut. Get it as square as possible.

I cut my seatpost shorter to save weight - no problems. There is usually a minimum height mark on the seatpost, just add this t the piece that sticks out of your frame and cut of the excess...

Carbon is not always lighter then alu. You need to fork out quite a bit to get a carbon part that is lighter then alu. If it is lighter then I will not cut it.

Just like guys going through so much to loose a bit of weight, what if you change seats or pedals and your saddle height has to go up a bit, then you buggered. Instead of going riding with 750ml bottle take a 500ml bottle. Problem solved.

Thanks for those who gave good advice.

Guys thanks for the caution advice. When you check you'l see that a seatpost is often made so long that someone 2m can use the thing. If a lady i 1.6m. You win alot of weight by cutting the thing. Bearing in mind re-sel will give issue.

Thanks

Some more weight saving tips using a cutter as tool:

1) Excess knobbies on your tyres

2) The side ridges of your grips

3) Cut all excess cable - buy new one´s when you need to adjust

4) Cut your handlebar as short as possible, it only need to provide for the stem + brake/shifter clamp + grips

5) Cut your finger and toe nails

6) Cut your hair

7) Cut your sleeves on riding jersey

8) Cut your cycling trousers just below the padding

Remove your ears (weight and aero saving)

Pinky fingers and small toes

One kidney

Tonsils

Appendix

All "hidden" teeth on one side of youur mouth

All your hair

Have a gastric bypass

Get circumcised if you not already.

And last, but not least, remove on testicle or bank your seed and do both.

That should do the trick.

I hate to agree with guys that are recommending you cut your ears off but I have to agree...sort of...

If you save 20g by cutting your carbon seat post shorter I'll eat the piece you cut off.

Seriously? You're going to go to the effort of cutting carbon to save 20g - even 40g at most?

Unless your bike is sub 5kg, you have 8% body fat and you belong to weight weenie of the month club I wouldn't bother.

Oh yeah - cut the sleeves off your racing jerseys - it'll save weight.

Oh - wait - your bike is under 5kg so you can't race is legally anyway.

What was I saying again?
