where from?

I assume you're asking about Redbar?

I get it directly from the manufacturer. He's one of my customers and manufacturers the stuff in Honeydew, Jhb.

He doesn't mind supplying me if I buy a box at a time.

I have seen it in our local bike shops and even at one Spar, but then again, I think he befriended the Spar's owner and offloaded some stock on him.

I don't know what the supply is like in Durban, but if you want, I'll send some down to you and you can give it a try.

The owner is fanatical about GI and ingredients and he's an excellent Masters racer as well. No bad/Chinese ingredients in there.

Be careful of low GI bars. Whilst low GI is good as a normal day to day food source, they are not that great for racing as whenyou are racing you want whatever you eat to go right into your bloodstream so that you can use it before the race is over. Eating low GI bars during a race may mean the food takes too long to digest and then you will know all about it.

Not saying those bars are not good, but just be careful if you think low GI is always a good thing.

Would the same apply to low gi drinks when racing?

Geez, is there such a thing as a low GI drink?

If there is, low GI is low GI so it comes down to how long it takes to digest and get absorbed into your bloodstream.

When I race I want somoething that goes in and gets used immediately so that my glygcogen stores are not affected. Once your glycogen get too low and you are racing at a higher intensity than what you can digest you only have a limited amount of time before you bonk. So I try and run off my stomach contents from my last pre-race meal and food on the bike. Low GI doesn't work for me as by the time the food is digested I have used most of my glycogen and then it is too late.

I race at over 900kcal/hour but can only digest around 700kcal. You only have about 1000-1500 kcal in glycogen, so it can run out depending how you feed. Then it is over.

I know that yopu have asked what energy bar to eat but I'd like to say that what really works for me is Christmas cake. I cut it into small pieces and wrap in tin-foil. 5 min after I eat it I feel like I have a new pair of legs! Try it for yourself!

Christmas cake and I have never been the best of mates <_< although you arent the first person who has recommended it. I might try some again and see...at this point Im prepared to try anything. Want to get settled on some new stuff before the main races start, so now is the best time to try new things...

Just found MacNab's bars. Home-grown, and only natural stuff. Reasonably priced as well - R 7.50 or so from Dis-Chem.

Taste good too!

+1 like the natural bit, no spikes

Hah ha! MIne definately has brandy in. Love the stuff!

yep, I had the task of keeping ours moist this Christmas biggrin.gif. Intoxicating drool.gif!

But seriously, I also find this stuff to be good energy food - any half decent fruitcake will do!

Raisins are great to munch while riding and racing as they have quick energy and (according Joe Friel and his sources) reduce the acidity of your blood. Seems like a good thing to me. Add flour, sugar and brandy and you have a winner

As for Low GI drinks, I have started using the 32GI that has just been launched and it woeks great for Base and faster rides, but I have not tried it for something as intense as a race. I found that the normal carb drinks give me a spike and then drop, never mind if I am drinking them early or late in the ride and prefer rather to eat something like raisins or an energy bar or take a slurp of gel if I need more.

Will let you know how the 32GI works on harder faster rides. (Harder and faster by my standards  )
