Standing and climbing

Maybe someone out there can help.

I have seen on the that the other guys can get out the saddle and keep going standing for a long time. a few minutes at a time

However when I try it my hart rate shoots up and I pop, thanks for trying....now go sit and watch the group speed away.

It seems that when the other guys do it they do not seem to be affected....what is the secret.

You mean like stand for a bit, sit down, then stand for a bit, and so on?

Yip that is what I mean...what do I need to do get better at it.

Know that feeling, HR rockets then, sit a$%# down buddy!!! I do think it has a lot to do with training more while standing. Would think that you could obviously ride a heavier gear as you would then be able to pull on the bar at the same time as using more "body weight" to push the pedal downwards. Must be a straggle with the pull motion on the alternate leg though??

Hey Coenie, if you have more upper body mass than the stander-uppers that would explain it. Every time you stand your body has to work that much harder to support your torso as it moves up and down and left to right - that is why your heart rate goes up.

I used to suffer like that when I stood up on the climbs and weighed in the 90's. These days I weigh 10kg's less and the problem has more or less gone away.

When you do your interval training up a hill do some of them standing up with the objective of climbing the whole hill standing.

Cool, thanks I will try it...is there anyting that I can look at wrt to form? Lean forward or back or bounce or not use quads or not?

You have to practise at it, and use a lower gear than you think you need. Also, the truly gifted at that type of climbing are naturally programmed to climb that way. Look at videos of the best pure climbers at the TDF I mean guys like Pantani, Contador, Rasmussen, they hardly sit still for long, in and out of the saddle, note that they also ride a lower gear than the non-pure climbers who need to get a slightly bigger gear rolling,in which case, sitting is easy for them.

You will have to find that point where you feel comfortable as leaning too much forward puts too much strain on the arms. You need to learn to feel where you are comfortable with the left to right sway of the bike as well.

As a rule you also need to change down at least two gears as you cannot maintain the same cadence standing as you were sitting ie much lower cadence when standing.

Standing while climbing is a position on the bike.

Laaik dropping into the bars on the speedy flats or descending.

Treat it as a position. Train the position. It'll get betta.
