Time on spinnin bike vs Road

Hi All

I've read somewhere that an hour on a spinning bike is worth two hours on the road (no stops, wheelsucking, traffic etc).  Due to work, family and travel commitments I spin quite a bit and would like to know if there are any other opinions on this as my training program is generally based on time.

Thanks

There's no substitute for road.

Use your IDT/Rollers for controlled envirnonment - Heart Rate Training and Intervals.

i agree with you.. It is more of a quality session, than when on the road.So yes,  time on an indoor bike is more like what 1.5 times more.(but i wouldnt say twice the time! )

It depends what you do when you're indoors vs out and the only way to know is to measure using heart rate or power.

Working indoors feels like more cos it's boring and you sweat more but you'd have to measure to be sure.

its genuinely harder to keep the same power on a indoor trainer as to the road..if find it much harder just to reach a certain power level let alone to keep it...as to where on the road it would be easier

I have been a spinning instructor for 4 years now.  Doing on average 4 classes per week.

There is no substitute for the road......nothing!!!

Spinning helps a lot on cardio........

I find spinning great for strength and cardio but no good for endurance. With the normal 45 min class and 5 min warmup, 5 min cooldown you are only getting just over 30 mins workout. Endurance is such a part of riding you need to get out onto the road and hammer for a good 2 hours. you will never get a good 20 - 30 min climb or steady state session in a spinning class.

Initially I felt as though I was actually gaining from spinning rather than training on the road, but after a while I began to feel as though I was getting weaker.

I think it's better to train on the road, but if you haven't got any other options, spinning is the next best thing.

I've also trained on the idt - but that's just nasty, would make me stop cycling altogether..

Would agree with CP, better than doing nothing but not as effective as being out on the road!

Having said that, it's pretty easy to 'slack' out on the road and JRA (just ride along!), specially if you're on your own! Maybe it's the 'peer' pressure in a spinning class of keeping up and actually (yip seen some who pretend you won't believe, sure Spidey can tell!) adjusting the 'resistance' that helps?

We (myself, casci and BrotherBen) have taken the specific workout options during the weekday morning rides, hill repeats Tuesdays (alternate between long and short ones), sprint intervals Thursdays. Wed and Fri are for the JRA rides. Weekend long road Sat and long mountain Sun.

casci will bear me out that the hill reps and sprint intervals can leave a strange taste in your mouth born out by bloodstains on the shirt when you get home! There's nowhere to hide on those! On the other hand depends what you want out of your training I guess, you wanna just survive a future race then JRA/spinning is probably all OK! If you got oke's around you that are always testing you and making comments about your age/fitness/weight/lack of hair etc. and you're competitive it needs a a bit more effort! Oh forgot also have to work hard cause that bored girls coming fast!

And just by the way the motto in my family is that if there is more than 1 of you it is a race!!!!!!

I way prefer ridin on the road to spinning, guess i jus don't have the patience.  Also you have no endurance from spinning, which you really feel on the longer weekend rides.

doing mostly spinning bacause i cant seem to get up early enough to put the bike in the car (not in garage) in the morning to go to kayalami.

the alternative, would be to join the guys from bruce reyneke twice a week 17:00 at the voortrekker monument.

problem: i do not have a mtb

solution: am in the market for a good second hand mtb that would not put me in permanet poverty. or if someone could - for the good of promoting cycling in sa - donate one to me - excellent !Big%20smile

but for now i am stuck in the spinning studio.

As I leave for work at around 5.30am a morning ride is out of the question.

In the evening the roads around Bedford View where I live are so congested a ride is (again) out of the question and I dont really have the inclination to load the bike in the car and go to the track, so I have no option but to attend a few spinning classes a week and of course I spend a fair time running as well.

To be honest, with job, social and family demands (and the occassional few hours allocated to sleeping) on my time I find it more and more difficult to find the time to train.

It was a lot easier when I lived with my mother.!Big%20smile
