Number 2 (my rant): while commuting and training I have found the taxis and busses to really try to help cyclists (i.e. cross the road' date=' etc.) IF you show them your intentions. [/quote']

earlier this year on a club ride our group was waiting to cross the R511 near Diepsloot, Northern Sewerage Works area - the road was really busy in both directions and we waited a long time, all the Merc's, BM's 4x4's went whizzing by - it was a taxi that stopped and held up all the traffic behind him so that we could cross.  Taxi coming in the opposite direction saw what was happening and also stopped.   So they do (occasionally) redeem themselves

Fellow cyclist - R.I.P.

It could have been you or me - we lay it on the line everytime we go out to train!

Just a thought about cycling lanes. I frequently see and hear this topic brought up as if it is the answer to most of our problems. We have a dedicated cycling lane in Randburg, going up Rabie Str, with curbing and everything. I have never seen a cyclist using it!!! Reason, cars don't drive there so it is littered with rubbish - stones, glass etc. I's just too dangerous to use!

Cool' date=' if anyone knows the guy or can put me touch with him as I know some one who knows someone who runs one of the SMS services...[/quote']

I'm also relatively new to the Hub but I'm pretty sure it's the guy called Shaunh and he posts quite regularly, usually to safety related issues (no ****! Big%20smile)

Racing Heart if i were you i would of torn off his mirror' date=' i train on the potch road and it scares me when i see how people behave around cyclist they just dont give a S*** ABOUT US. Cars just pass other cars and just dont care if you are approaching from the front, about 3 weeks ago a car came from the front and passed another car, i grabbed my water bottle and threw it at him. 1.Water bottle = 1.Toyota without a mirror. Out of the whole car i threw the mirror right off and then the guy wanted to moer me but eventually he drove away.So we have got to stick up for ourselves even if it is not in the best manner[/quote']

nope I decided I was enjoying my ride to much! If I did that it would just mess up the day's training..so I left it.. Wasn't in the mood to fight

motorist need to chill. We all need to Chill. everybody is so highly strung all the time. its really so sad to see how impolite everybody is with everybody else on the roads. And we cyclist are also guilty... When we cruising along and this idiot deliberately almost takes you out.... just wave. I know you want to moer him but it takes me the next 20km to calm down again. So just wave..... trust me.  It annoys them more to wave than to throw the old zap sign.....

As a cyclist and a motorist for that matter, I just try and let the bad stuff on the road go and focus on the good. That way I stay relaxed. I am ultra careful, usually cycle with my 15 year old daughter so cannot afford to get caught up in a them vs us thing. Just smile and wave, or just ignore them. Retaliatory behaviour affects the whole cycling community. I find waving at a motorist thanking him for allowing to pass always is greeted with a wave and smile and by clearly signalling my intentions, motorists are ok.

It is just a way of life that we all rush everywhere. As i mentioned i run quite a bit and I run on the opposite side of the road and into oncomming traffic in quiet suburbs in Benoni, you will not belive how often people drive as close to the pavement as possible in order to get me to jump onto the pavement. Our pavements are in such bad condition it makes running on them difficult. I just laugh and shrug my shoulders knowing that the fat, high cholestrol smoking idiot will not have as healthy a life a me. They are just jealous as I am healthy and fit

OK Guys, I have been in contact with Shaun at Sign-Up and I have been able to set up an SMS donation number for him through Cycling ETC.

SMS donate cyclingetc to 33003 to contribute R30

http://www.cyclingetc.co.za will have more details soon for larger donations or corporate donations. They are in the process of creating a link that will be offered to cycle club websites and online stores etc for anyone that really does want to help making cycling safer.

I have also arranged to have a banner printed for Shaun @ Sign-Up who will have a both at the 94.7 Expo this week.

Support Shaun as he is actually doing something to make our rides safer and has put a heck of a lot of effort into this. An article about Sign-Up is in the current issue of Bicycling.

Update! Ummm errr... Thanks to all that have tried to use the SMS donation number seems I jumped the gun and the SMS techs are hoping for it to be up today. I will update as soon as it is up. Sorry guys!

Ps my Mum said someone on the NZ All Blacks fan website had started an auction for the All Blacks Team at $1. At least the Boks could use them as cheap training fodder!!!
