Please recommend a JHB [MtB] bike shop...

Hi all,

I recently had a huge fight with my LBS. It was one too many. Needless to say, they've lost a dedicated customer. Unfortunately they went downhill after their best man left. Unfortunately he now works quite far away, else I would have given him and his new employer my continued business.

I am in need of a good bike shop that I can trust and that won't rip me off, in my area.

There are a few shops I would really prefer not to deal with - past experiences - but I will consider all suggestions.

My bike is a Trek AM/FR bike. It doesn't do a lot of distance, but it is ridden hard and I need a shop that can maintain it properly.

Air-based shocks F+R. RS fork and Manitou rear.

Who in the area deals with Trek frames, can handle the maintenance of these shocks and works to high level?

Solomon's is in my area. Are they any good for this kind of work?

Thanks.

I must say that I have been VERY happy at Dunkeld Cycles. They give great service and the mechanics know their stuff. Check out their new website - www.dunkeldcycles.co.za

You could go to Summit Cycles in Midrand, the owner, Anton, is a bit of a nutter but a top class bloke nonetheless ;)

Another big up for Dunkeld, good stock there and friendly bunch, they are quite busy but good vibe there. The 'workshop' is in the shop so thats good for transparency

The whole experience at DC is awesome. The guys give a service that's more personal than any other LBS I know. Not slating other LBS's out there. Just love mine!

Im sorry guys but I am not a fan of Dunkeld Cycles - I went there for advice and was told my shocks/tyres were to hard etc and they made me drop the pressure in both....my shock was bottoming out in the first 1km of a ride and my rims "bubbled" due to the tyre pressure being to low, this after having disagreed strongly in the shop. I think Mikes bike and Morningside cycles are pretty descent and then Solomons in Woodmead - Agter is a legend

Thanks for the input guys.

In the interests of enlightenment, why would you not service your bike at Solomon's?

I've never had my bike serviced there, so I'm not hinting, I'm genuinely curious.

I've also heard about another small shop in Sunninghill (name unknown, but it's near the Spar) that I might try tomorrow.

I've had bad service from Solomons on a faulty RD they stuffed me around no end, I walked out. I must add in plugging Dunkeld I have only bought a few bits and pieces from them and do all my own servicing now, but I like that shop, and they know there stuff, its a hive of activity.

In terms of setting up preload in shocks common guys it's a no-brainer, just follow the procedures that you will find from the manufacturer, same goes for other setup. You might need a small shock pump but thats a good investment anyway.

For MTB, especially shocks, Johan Bornman. I've never had a bike serviced at Solomon's in Woodmead but I've spent a lot on parts there. Always been most helpful to the point of stripping a derailer off a new bike for me when they did not have the one I needed. (Had six different Deore 8 speed RD's in stock but I needed the seventh). I'll be back.

"Go to Johan Bornman, he know his stuff bigtime "

Yes! Yes! Yes!

+1 Yup! Yup! Yup!

...Solomons not too bad either. Their chief mech went to the shop in Melrose Arch though. They specialise in Specialized (only I think).
