Hopefully no more Dickens' quotes from organisation run by Walt Disney characters.

IMHO CSA needs a healthy dose of professionalism for the organisation of such an event - in fact, as has been suggested, they should outsource it to experienced outfits that know what they're doing - the IronMan organisers wouldn't be a bad place to start as their events have always run like clockwork & on time without fail.

Also this is apparently one of the guilty motorists from yesterday's shambles: My link

the event organising was outsourced to Eric Lenferna's company. he organised the Giro, Argus for many years then went to work for the UCI. he came back to sa and orgainsied Junior World Champs, World B Champs without a problem.

As well as the BMX and MTB world cups and championships.

If anyone else had organised this, how else would we have dealt with a person who is prepared to driver over a kerb or attempt to knock over a marshal or JMPD officer?

When it gets to that stage, there is no other option than to make the decisions that were made yesterday to suspend the stage.

i agree that they did the right thing to stop the race, but hey, why didn't they have full road closure??? and if you where relying on the metro cops, well lets just say i have my reservations about them (not all of them but some!)

other big races in sa are so well organised so, why not put the added effort to probably the biggest cycling event in SA??

i am not too sure, did the previous cape argus cycle tour have the same problem??

Greg Till, looks like egg on your face again, dude. sincerely hoped after your responses to the SA Champs, you guys would have pulled out all the stops to make this event go thru without any major hiccups.

Man I need to vent! - I even went to support the guys! I truly hope things improve from here! But it must be said, coverage etc compared to an event like Tour of Oman and Qatar (Worlds apart). Maybey we should use our awesome toll roads next year. I'm sooooooooooo upset about this, weve got so much talent but man are we seriously lacking in alot of areas we gotta stop kidding ourselves and get alot more professional! Why do we get it right with the Argus and the 94.7 - maybey because the roads are closed for the whole day?. Its not going to work by trying to send the traffic cops on bikes 10 minutes before lanes need to be opened, even if their are some cops waiting at some points for the bikes to arrive, the bikes close off the lanes and if there is no control until they arrive its not going to work! Come on! Man I'm angry and I'm just a fan, how do the cyclist competing feel? Phil is a real gentleman about this!

Guys, try to understand. This was a pro tour, not a mass participation ride. You can't have full road closure for a peleton that passes by in ten minutes, rolling road closure is a normal practice.

It worked on stage one.

Once someone decides to force their way onto a route, no form of road restriction or road closure will work and no one should have to endanger themselves like that, wether it's ASO, UCI, CSA or whoever else pops up on your list.

Yes there are some strongly valid criticism, but nothing that results in justifying the actions of some motorists yesterday.

Right now, there is still a tour on, with some great racing.

How does the president get around?

Blue light cavalcade...if THEY can get a rolling closure right.... why not get them to ride with the peloton?

Regards holding it so close to Sandton, Formuala 1 trials were run as a showcase through the center of Sandton on a weekday, full road closure on roads. This shows it can be done and the disruption to traffic was far more than what this cycle race would have been.

<_< Been implied already but must have my say too!...City centres in SA are not the places to have cycling events! On a Sunday morning, if not coming from, or going to, church then motorists are focussed on getting their shopping done as quickly and efficiently as possible. And taxi drivers are going to ply their trade regardless. They do not want their activities disrupted by cycle races!

The typical city dweller either doesn't know, doesn't understand or doesn't care about cycling. Attempts to convert them otherwise will never happen in SA because of these mindsets.

This fantasy about showcasing the "heart" of SA is a load of bull. What people, anywhere in the world, are interested in seeing squalor in townships, or traffic jams or old buildings even, when all they are really wanting to watch is a cycle race.

There are some fantastic cycling routes in the rural areas and that is where the cycling should take place!

I feel very embarrassed for our country and sorry for the cyclists who just want to get on and race.

Yip from here we can look forward to great racing, and probably no more logistical issues.

One point - CSA had a similar problem with PE's city centre at SA Road Champs. Several events also got cancelled. That's a tremendous disservice to those riders who trained, attended etc. I think you have learn lessons and apply them, because PE was a test case for the urban stage through JHB. Not sure if you can blame drivers, not matter how rude they are...you have to create a situation where everything is under control, and you have contingencies in place based on anticipating every eventuality. The simple solution for urban racing: start earlier, race in a confined area [laps, eg last stage of Tour de France in Paris] or close roads. Rolling road closures don't work in dense urban areas because there are hundreds of feeder roads, and what about driveways...

Anyway, tomorrow should be good.
