Tour of South Africa Shocking

The Metro Cops just seem to have disappeared, CSA or the cops just simply not feeling like doing their job? A week ago I rode the Dischem Ride for Sight. It was not through the centre of JHB but all the intersections were controled by the Metro Cops and marshals.

Got an sms earlier from Joe Low, he had been following the riders around. Appears the cops/marshals were also posted on the wrong streets.

As much as i love cycling no one of relevance in this country gives a sh%t about the sport as there is no financial gain for the same assholes that are f%cking up this country. Cycling will always be a niche sport followed and supported by the passionate minority.

I was in one of the team cars, and saw motorists of all races disobeying the marshalls and police. How often do you see people throwing litter and stompies out of their cars and do nothing? How many of us jump red lights on out bikes and our card, etc etc. South Africans are to blame for what happened today. A call was made by CSA to assist with the Tour, how many of us put up our hands?

Is because it is seen as a "White, elitest sport".

Should have arranged the chaps that drives Winnie's and the other fatcats cars, to go ahead with their blue lights, sirens and waving guns. Would quickly have cleared the road. :D

doesn't seem to have an impact on the amashova, the 94.7, the argus, the cape epic, comrades and a multitude of other events? what call was made by csa and when? don't blame sa's for what is a csa cock-up, they chose the venue, they chose the date, they chose the routes, laying off blame elsewhere is bs!

I agree

I have been busy with work of late and didnt have time to follow the race yesterday or see the route info.

How I found out: Went for my Sunday ride this morning and did my usual route to JHB ZOO from fourways and NO SIGNS and my climbs from Nothumberland to Ontdekkers to see a SINGLE sign that said Tour of South Africa 1KM to go for what was the king of the mountain climb.

I did a total of 90 km of which 40 odd was on the route course and there were NO SIGNS like you find on the 94.7 in bright yellow advising of road closure... Heads should roll

Yes I fully agree - to bring traffic to a stop you should surely advise the people affected in advance on not as they get to the intersection (along with the peleton...). Surely traffic department should also be blamed for not ensuring safe roads for all on the day.

Was the public aware of the race and the route it would take (CSA)

Were the marshals and metro police aware and posted on the correct intersection on route. (CSA)

ROAD RESTRICTIONS FOR THE CELL C TOUR OF SOUTH AFRICA

GAUTENG ROAD RESTRICTIONS – 20TH FEBRUARY

The Cell C Tour of South Africa would like to forewarn drivers in the Gauteng and Tshwane areas about traffic congestion and road restrictions that will affect travellers during the Inaugural Tour of South Africa.

Please familiarise yourself with the map of Stage 2 of the event to ascertain the best route to travel prior to leaving home. The map is accompanied by a detailed road schedule and estimated time frame of when restrictions can be expected. The details for each stage may be found under the stages section for your convenience.

We are alerting you to the routes early with the intent of causing as little inconvenience as possible in relation to the Cell C Tour of South Africa.

Please note that these are rolling road restrictions and not total road closure, so you will be delayed in bursts of anything from 10 minutes to 45 minutes pending on the routes you choose.

Maybe we should have it in 11 official languages

A recipe for success (IMHO):

- Take the race through the outskirts of town where the traffic control is easier.

- Don't go through the centre of town on a Saturday or Sunday.

- Make sure you have EXCELLENT TV coverage (not the cell phone footage they are currently broadcasting. I have seen better quality pictures on YouTube)

Once the tour gains popularity THEN bring it to the people. The cycling fans will make an effort to go and watch no matter where it is.
