  1. I did the RideLondon event.Great event, well organized with an awesome route. It felt like I was doing the TDF with so many spectators lining the streets,it was simply unbelievable support.
  2. E-bikes are not only for the ‘fat & lazy’ ! They certainly do not mess up any trails and clearly should and will not compete in races other than their own category. As someone also previously mentioned, they have a maximum speed assistance of 25km/ hr which won’t therefore always be of assistance. If it is going to get more people riding bikes then what is the problem ! Rather than retiring from cycling due to age/health issues etc, cyclists now have another option. They are not totally dissimilar to one cyclist having a R5000 bike with lousy components and weighing a ton as opposed to someone else they are competing against with a R50 000 or even R100000 bike. They are part of the future in cycling,so let’s accept that and ALL have some fun.
  3. Looking forward to doing the 50km but waiting to see the route/profile
  4. I have had 2 spinal fusions and after trying numerous saddles bought a B-17 and have never looked back. They don't like water so be careful.
  5. I am moving to Hermanus in a few months so looking for some mtb'ing trails/routes please.I guess it is not safe to ride on your own,so looking for a group that goes out regularly but nothing too hectic. Can someone please recommend a good place to look/start.I see there is a cycle shop over the road from Hemel en Aarde Estate where I am going to be living, they could be worth a visit to check all this out I guess.
  6. I cannot see any alternative other than changing the route.I somehow doubt whether it would be cancelled, too many people have flights/hotel's etc booked and paid for. I am flying down to Cape Town tomorrow morning no matter what the decision is. In the meanwhile I will pray for everyone affected by this terrible tragedy.
  7. We will be in Melbosstrand from the 27th December and hoping to ride from there on the cycle path into town and then on to Camps Bay etc.My question is how safe is it to ride on the cycle path as I have seen a few comments re muggings along there.
  8. Awesome news, hope her and Ashleigh give it horns. What an amazing athlete
  9. An amazing talent we have here and looking for bigger things next year. After looking good for most of the race last Saturday (UCI road champs) she lost it towards the end and finished 20th.I really thought she was in with a good chance to get a top 5 position but without having a bigger team to help her,it became a tall ask.
  10. "Training" should now really be done.Do NOT underestimate this race,it is long and has lots of climbing, the downhills are over quickly and you start climbing again. It can get terribly hot so make sure you stay hydrated. There is plenty of good food along the way so take a few gels and/or bar's with.
  11. I placed an order for 2 Geax Saguaro 29x2.2 tyres on Wednesday and on arrival at home yesterday the package was waiting for me.Not only the BEST PRICE from them but great service.
  12. As an employee of Standard Bank and as a resident of Port Elizabeth, this is AWESOME news.
  13. I will be there but wish the Fischer's corner (spelling !) section had not been included as the road is so bad for road bikes.
  14. I read each of the top 3 on your list but not each one every issue.I enjoy Tread magazine the best but the other's can also have some good articles.
  15. I did the last 8 days of the 2014 TDF with Sports International UK.You can either chose to only be a spectator or cycle some of the route prior to the BIG boys coming through.Your coach will take you to a point and then you either walk around a wait or cycle the section previously mentioned. You need to choose when you want to watch/cycle ie the big mountain days or the flatter routes. If you are not a decent climber I would suggest you give the big climbs a miss as they are seriously tough. We hired bikes through Sports INt which were pretty decent Scott's but most of those on the tour took their own. This to me would have been a logistical nightmare as you have to catch train's/busses/taxi's and walk along street's with all of your luggage. You could do it on your own but I would think some knowledge of the area is needed. Now that we have done the Pyrenees stages we could probably hire a car and do our own thing as we have some idea. We obviously watched on the Champs Elysees and had a good spot but don't forget they simply fly passed on each lap. If I knew the area better I think a camper van would be the best way to do it.Just remember that hotel's in France generally have very small rooms. All in all it is an awesome experience but as already suggested,go prepared. What we did find a bit strange is that you don't see many stalls selling TDF goodies etc.
  16. I only did the MTB ride but have heard from a number of mates that the 2 extra climbs on the new section were extremely tough and probably not for the average roadie.I overheard someone who had just finished saying he will never do it again.
  17. This is an awesome ride/race,wish I could do it again this year but we leave for France on the same day ie to watch the TDF.
  18. My latest cycling related purchase was for a package tour to watch the TDF 2014.Looking forward to ticking this one off my bucket list.
  19. I use a thermal underlayer sweat absorbing vest, with short sleeve top, armwarmers as I can take them off if it gets too hot (rather than a long sleeve top),normal bib shorts with legwarmers (same reason),buff and a good/warm set of gloves.I then use a yellow windbreaker on top of that, easy to slip into a back pocket afterwards.Mohair socks are great to keep the feet warm. I enjoy Assos shorts but they are expensive, otherwise Giordana/Velotex Red label.
  20. Nothing wrong with Morewood and Momsen,in fact awesome bikes. They are "manufactured" in the East but designed etc locally.
  21. For those that might not know, you cannot cycle in the Baviaans from the "Boom" without a back-up vehicle any longer. This is because they have introduced buffalo into that area and are obviously a danger. It does make me wonder how they will handle the TB with all those cyclists and no back up vehicles. It will also be in the dark for most cyclists. We had an awesome ride from Kondomer (spelling !) to the boom and back yesterday....just a bit short around 35 km/s but still a good work out.Maybe park at Padlangs next time and leave from there.
  22. My lockout has packed up twice and my bike is currently having the front shock sorted.I am not sure if this is a general problem with the bike
  23. Congrats on your vigilance, the owner must be very chuffed
