  1. but it doesnt have an 80% chance of being cancelled, if I recall its only been cancelled the 1 time. this is the point. If you've been training hard you can gauge yourself against yourself over the same route. Sure there are other factors like weather etc. that can influence your time. Sure you can ride it mostly for free on other days, but the atmosphere on the day is what makes it. 947 up here in the big smoke is pulling the same amount of entrants, but for me its purely a test of my abilities as there is bugger all atmosphere (unless you count the angry motorists).
  2. When I still stayed with my parents and they had a postbox the envelope would be perfect with hardly a mark on it. When I moved into my own place, despite having a postbox with an opening big enough to get a magazine in comfortably and the envelope stating in big letters DO NOT BEND, the postman would bend the envelope in half and shove it in the postbox.
  3. cant use the big mac index as there was no big mac in SA back then, how about a bottle of coca cola
  4. was still a note back then too
  5. Thats fantastic memorabilia, thanks Tim. I think I actually got a cloth badge on completion of my first one.
  6. I go back, but I dont go that far back. When I entered my first one in 1998 for the 1999 event I already had a gmail account (gmail was by invitation only back then). But I remember waiting patiently for my seeding and magazine in the post.
  7. yip, same as selling a car you still owe the bank for. They dont care as long as they get their cash from you.
  8. I keep threatening to buy one, but for now a piece of weed eater gut in my toolbox is the tool I use.
  9. obviously not for cape town, their is no inverted option there.
  10. When seeding comes out you can always drop them an email with some supporting info (strava training and or previous results), sometimes it works and they bump you up a few groups.
  11. Wish my Gmail went far back enough, I think my first one I paid something like R175.
  12. Been chatting the wife. the 3kw system that the guy has can have panels added at a later stage, so could find a more permanent place in the house. wife will be chatting to her mom to see if she’s willing to assist.
  13. Thanks Chris Might have to re-evaluate.
  14. yeah I worked off power rating from the interweb. 100w laptop charger (its actually 90w), but the laptop should last the full 4 hours (its MBP, but the wife pushes the machine with the graphics she does), external screen is 100w according to interwebs, the other 50w for fibre and Apple Time Capsule. Lets safely say we can remove 100w for the laptop. 2 x 12v 100ah gel batteries are going to be 5k from my brief google. B.T.W. you guys were right on the trolleys being scarce. The place her colleague bought from wont have stock until end Oct beginning of Nov. The next size up he can offer is a 3kw 2 battery system for just shy of 15k
  15. I also dont have an issue with hiking prices the later you enter. It must be hell to try and predict numbers, especially since the cancelled event and covid. I assume the last minute entries after that went up exponentially.
  16. so how long with something like this with one battery run a load of around 250w ?
  17. I’d love a proper system, with panels for charging etc. But there are no funds for this. Even buying the trolley is a problem funds wise.
  18. Problem is I’m using a apple time capsule as my router. Yes not the best option I know. That takes 220v in.
  19. Thanks. The cup-a-tea scenario is not to much of a problem, having a gas stove/oven combo has cooking covered. A few lights here and there will be great, but not completely necessary as we have a few globes around with back batteries in them. The TV though I could see being a thing, but research shows that will use very similar power to a laptop charger so not a biggy. But even if it is a problem, if the wifi is up and laptop battery has charge its ok. For us right now priority is the wifes work, so laptop, screen, fibre and wifi. The MIL though wants her TV to run, and I'll make sure to limit her to the LCD in her bedroom as her lounge TV is a big as CRT thing.
  20. I also get the feeling that 947 is making the effort to be great, to grow. I guess new sponsors always help. Where as CTCT almost feels like the Toyota of the fun rides. Everyone knows we're great, they will keep coming. Obviously this is not taking into account what goes on in the background.
  21. how much is not much more ? and point me in that direction ok just checked the link, thats a bit of a crazy price compared to what the Mrs has sent me.
  22. Right o'wise people of leHub. The wife working from home is now gatvol of loadshedding whilst she is trying to work. I has been instructed to investigate Inverter trolleys to keep laptop and wifi going. A colleague of hers from work forwarded a price list and contact details of someone she used when she bought her inverter. I think the guy got electrocuted and is lying in the corner somewhere as numerous calls and emails are un-answered. So point me in the right direction of where to buy in Gauteng please. Oh, and the monster-in-law has jumped on the bandwagon and decided she cant do without TV for a few hours so she also wants one. She was talking about wanting to boil a kettle too but I quickly told her to check her schedule and fill a flask before the power goes out.
  23. If you want the bike to use to get fit you want something that is at least slightly enjyoable to ride. A heavy brick like you get from the likes of game etc. will not encourage you to ride much. Riding will be a schlep and you wont do it nearly as often.
  24. and then we call Hi-Q across the road when they leave and order new tyres for all the cars they tyre kicked.
  25. my standard response to someone that walks into the dealership and says to me they're just window shopping "perfect sir, all our cars have windows"
