  2. what gloves are those? full finger except the thumb
  3. haha - i actually spent 5 minutes going through the pictures trying to guess which was which - tjop
  4. got to agree with avid brakes not being my favourite - i'm pretty sure that as an accountant, even I could design something better. but having said that, you should be able to get them to stop rubbing the rotor. maybe have a look at youtube about proper set-up
  5. i really hate it when people use the phrase "new and improved". it's either "new" or "improved" - can't be both!!! but other than that, those look like some really awesome bikes are those plastic bottle cages? look really chunky

what sort of riding do you do?
  7. this is really my kind of race - great odds of getting near a podium position
  8. I think he means you can't really compare it's weight with it running a carbon fork. compare apples with apples - put on a suspension fork and then we'll all rave about how it's the lightest 29'er MTB. I agree it doesn't really mean anything to me(weight wise) with it running a rigid fork
  9. well anyone wanting to leave virgin who lives in hout bay can try the new velocity sports gym - had a look when i went to their vida cafe and looks really sweet. proper spinning bikes at least. and i hear rynard tissink will be running triathlon courses (things) from there. http://www.velocitysportslab.co.za/
  10. So the moral of the story is get a 29'er and: - you have to pay a premium - you may have to ride the trail again as you finished sooner than the amount of time you allocated to riding - that awesome trail down the road that used to be challenging becomes easier (and less fun) but you get to ride 2 minutes faster. ----------------- but seriously i'd like a 29'er for races, but not for messing about on my local trail. If you take a Landcruiser to a playground it might be a bit boring - you rather take a fiat panda and even the pavement becomes a challenge. (the 29'er would be the landcruiser if anyone didn't catch the link in the analogy)
  11. there is something special about a steel bike. it's not there to make you win races, but if you want to have some fun on the trail it has an awesome feel. just built up a steel hard-tail and haven't had so much fun on a bike in years
  12. i know some people will flame the OP for not waiting 10 years and sending 50 emails to the agents but i actually think these are the most useful types of threads that pop up on the hub. it lets the future / potential buyers get a taste of what they will be dealing with wrt specific brands
  13. so which of the leaders are the strongest runners?
  14. try Neils wheels - i hear they can get any bike or part. but seriously, no, as far as i know it only comes as a whole bike. (i think)
  15. be careful of sharks

  17. hey guys. thought i'd tell you about my experience with a new bike shop in Hout Bay, Cape Town. It's "the complete cyclist: Hout Bay" to be honest i wasn't expecting too much from this shop. i didn't think hout bay really needed a cycling shop and didn't intend going there as my experience is that these shops not in town or an industrial area are probably going to be expensive. but i was working on a bike project and didn't have the right tool to change the crank. popped down to the new shop and they changed the crank from one of my bikes to the other. i really expected then to hardly show interest with me as i was expecting to be only paying R50 or R100 and most bike shops i've been to usually hardly pay attention unless you're dropping the value of a small car in their shop. well they stopped working on their other bikes, changed the crank out from one of my bikes to the other, and gave me a free cup of coffee. (real coffee). AND THEY DID THIS FOR FREE i was also really surprised at their great prices for goods. i saw UST Kenda Nevegal tires for about R350 - this is cheaper than i can land them from chain reaction cycles after VAT is added (and assuming free shipping) i will definitely be using them again and stopping there for coffee on my rides. They said coffee (think its a Cappuccino - haha, shows how much i know about coffee) will be R12 from this weekend, but if they use the same cups, then they are big cups and totally awesome. and apparently the mechanic studied bike mechanics in the UK and worked for Rapha Condor pro cycling team - so he should know his stuff oh, and i'm in no way associated with the shop, just thought i'd add my great experience i had today and really stoked that this shop is only a couple of minutes away from me
  18. flip i hope its not that weekend - it's the weekend before my final exam
  19. i read it "slooooooowly" and it's the same when i read it quickly. saying dibs means nothing as often the seller will have received a pm from another hubber before. the guuy may also have advertised elsewhere at an earlier stage and may have buyers who enquire before someone on the hub says "dibs". i don't recall the forum rules saying one may only advertise on the hub
  20. yes i'd love to see that. i'll give you R5.00 if you try that.
  21. a lot of people burning you for doing this, but i'm with you - i would have done the same thing. all these roadies becoming mtb'ers and being so anal about the rules etc. (bring back carefree mtb'ing of the 1980's!!! (ok i can't really say that as i wasn't born yet) on another note, i was chatting to an american exchange student and she says its really common place for this to happen over there. races are expensive and everyone turns a blind eye for students to ride (and at runs) without paying. i think she says its know as a "pirate" racer (can't remember exactly, but something like that)
  22. hahahahahahaha
  23. ouch, just chased away another rookie. haha, anyone know a decent bike shop in his area, and the cost of a fork service for an oil fork?
  24. i really wish this was true, but feel that it's probably just hot air as i've heard this rumour for years. all i actually want is to be able to mtb from hout bay to varsity (UCT), but you can only MTB on the front of table mountain (ie deer park area)
