  1. http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/article/workshop-setting-up-mountain-bike-suspension-23318/
  2. Set your sag up first. For the fork, turn propedal, compression damping, etc to full open. Get on your bike in the attack position i.e. standing on the pedals, full kit on. Get off carefully, take note of where the rubber o-ring on the fork leg is. This should be about 35% of total fork travel. If not, adjust the air pressure (for air fork) or preload for coil fork. Same for shock, except you should be sitting on the saddle when checking sag. For setting rebound, I would set it somewhere between half way and full slow. Go ride, if either end feels bouncy, slow the rebound a little more. If it feels wallowy, speed up the rebound a little. Go ride, watch some suspension tuning videos.
  3. Its really quite easy. First, what bike do you have and what fork and shock do you have? What sort of riding do you do?
  4. Agreed. Take off the shifters too, you don't need more than one gear anyway.
  5. I'm riding a 2010 set of American Classics(I'm 90kg) with no issues whatsoever. I've replaced 2 sets of tyres on these wheels and havent found the tape to be lifting. No dings either, however, because of my weight, I don't ride low pressures. They are really great wheels and I would take them over Mavic's.
  6. You could also consider the Kona Unit. Has sliding dropouts, so when you order, specify the geared dropouts. I'm loving mine. Otherwise Jamis Dragon is also a hot bike.
  7. That's music to my ears! I'll be watching their progress with interest.
  8. I also know about an SS team. Probably 29'r.
  9. You can just use any normal mtb crank. Just remove the chainrings you don't need and put washers at the back of the chainring bolts. You can also PM me, I've got a couple of spare single speed specific rear cogs, a spacer system if you are using a conventional freehub rear wheel and chain tensioner.
  10. PM me. I'll let you have mine for R1000 including a spare rear wheel and a trainer specific tyre.
  11. I've had no warranty claims on this frame and its 2 years old, so I wouldn't know. However, I know that one of the Giant team riders rides his Anthem X Advanced with 120mm fork, so it looks like Giant are happy with it.
  12. I'm running that exact setup on my Anthem X currently. What it did for me was to slow the handling down a bit, whilst still allowing my narrow bar setup. The additional travel helps too.
  13. Define "cracked"? I can get up, whilst leaning on my bakkie and ride about 7 metres along my driveway. So far turning and freemounting is eluding me. Then again, I only get on it very occasionally.
  14. Here's mine. I did post this in my build thread, but I believe it also belongs here. Please ignore the 24 inch SS lying next to it and the poor picture.
  15. Yes. They have nice permanent tent style accommodation overlooking the water. However, the road getting to the gate is quite rural, so be careful if you are using a sedan or hatchback.
  16. Kona Unit. I'm loving mine.
  17. When I get that 19 tooth cog.
  18. White grips? Look again, those are the new Gray grips from ESI.
  19. Like a dream. Its my first steel frame, my first 29er. There are one or two sections at Rietvlei that used to have the potential to catch me out on the 26er. I cleared them easily this time round. I still need to spend a lot more time riding, but I'm really enjoying the feel of the bike. Its handling is quite similar to the XTC I came off of, but the steel fork is a lot more forgiving than the carbon fork I was running before. Also, the Carnegie is great, just need to find the perfect setup. I've already dropped the stem 10mm and inverted it in preparation for this weekend.
  20. The finished product. Looking satisfied after her weekend debut at Rietvlei. I might have to relook the gearing. I transferred the 32x18 I had on the 26", but its a much bigger gear on the 29". According to Sheldon Brown, my gain ratio has increased from 3.3 to 3.7, just by changing the wheels.
  21. OK, I've been running a 32/18 on a 26r for the past year and its been fine for most things. However, I've just upgraded to a 29r and have carried this gear ratio across. I will definitely be taking along a 19 and a 20 tooth to SSWC.
  22. Seems like there are over a 100 entries already. I'm guessing all entries will be gone by end February.
  23. Entered. Along with the_nerd.
  24. I picked the wheels up secondhand from a friend of a friend of a friend. The rims are Loaded AMXC 29r rims. http://www.loadedusa.com/products/rims/amxc-29''-(xc,-trail)/ I know Johan Bornman from Yellow Saddle was getting them in at one stage, but I'm not sure if he can still get them.
  25. Its a Ragley Carnegie alloy bar. Borrowed it from Stretched@Birth. Initial impressions seem quite good. It feels quite comfortable with the stem slammed to the headset, but I haven't taken it on dirt yet. I'll probably cut it with 20mm of adjustment, 10mm below the stem and 10mm above it and play around with it. Also not sure about the 80mm stem. It feels ok, but once again, not sure what it will feel like on the dirt. Official debut will be at Rietvlei on Saturday.
