  1. I'm quite keen on the Surly Krampus. 29er with a 3 inch tyre. They go on sale in December.
  2. I've ridden some sections of the Baviaanskloof in April last year. Drove through to Makadat Caves, about 60km into the Baviaanskloof, overnighted there and rode from there to the entrance of the reserve itself. Be aware though, that they may not allow you to ride in the reserve. We were stopped at the entrance and prevented from riding on. However, driving through the reserve, we came across some foreign cyclists travelling in the opposite direction, touring. Also, be aware that you require a vehicle with high ground clearance for the reserve. Patensie is an awesome little town. Stay at the hotel at the entrance to town, the food is fantastic.
  3. Doesn't seem as though they have any local accreditation through SAQA.
  4. I'm going to be trying these out in December. Saw a route report online somewhere that classifies them as Moderate to Difficult.
  5. I've contacted them and the Skookum is about 3 weeks from delivery to them. All three colours in all the sizes. Next order is only next year,so if you want one, you best get cracking.

  7. The ongoing maintenance costs of MTB was one of the things that prompted my initial foray into SS. I can now replace my entire drivetrain for the price of an XT cassette and it will easily last 3 times the mileage of the average 10 speed drivetrain.
  8. I thought so too. I need to strip it down to the frame only and then go over the frame with polish. I'll see what needs to be done after that. It rides really well.
  9. Here's some quick pics of mine. As you can see, has seen better days. The pedals have been changed to Shimano 600 with toe clips.
  10. I've just picked up one of these. Completely original with 6 speed Shimano 105, Wolber rims, Biopace, the works. Needs some TLC as there are some scratches and a bit of rust. Also needs new bar tape and new cables. Was toying with the idea of turning it into a SS/fixie type ride, but with all the original parts including the saddle and some period Shimano 600 pedals, i think it would be better as a restoration.

  12. Cash. Next one, hopefully insurance claim.
  13. I have also spent a lot on bicycles and up to recently had a fleet of 5 bikes. After my two most expensive bikes were stolen and I was looking at the cost of replacement, it dawned on me that my favourite bike, the one I ride most often was the cheapest. Less than R9k complete, all new parts. To paraphrase somebody that has recently been in the news, my enjoyment of cycling is not about the bike.

  15. Hi guys, I am looking for some guidance on what tyre to use for the the front of my rigid 29er SS. I started off with Maxxis Crossmark 2.1, but changed quite quickly to the Ikon 2.2. I've been very happy with the Ikons, overall grip is better than the Crossmarks. However, At the 6 hour on Saturday, I sliced the sidewall of my front Ikon and the tyre is kaput. Should I go for another Ikon, given that I have been happy with the performance or should I consider the Maxxis Ardent in 2.25, a much more aggressive tyre? Weight guide: Maxxis Ikon 2.2 EXC 3C 520g Maxxis Ardent 2.25 LUST 880g
  16. Me too.
  17. Thanks for the support guys. I guess I'm now committed to SS, its the only one the b@st@rds left me.

  19. I haven't ridden at Modderfontein before. What's the elevation like? More Northern Farms or Thaba?
  20. Ok, following on from Dangle's unsubtle hint that we should give recommendations based on personal experience, here goes: I've been riding the Kona Unit since the beginning of the year after lusting after a steel SS specific frame with sliding dropouts. I had a whole list of wants when I was shopping for the frame: Steel SS specific Sliding dropouts Short chainstays Affordable thin tubing clearance for a biggish tyre To be honest, my first choice was the Ritchey. Unfortunately, at the time, I would have waited around 6 months to obtain a frame, as all the frames in the first shipment were taken. However, after riding the Kona for around 9 months now, I'm glad I made the choice I did. It feels a lot like the XTC I was riding previously with regard to handling. Its (relatively) light, compared to a GT Peace, it softens the trail without feeling dead. Its affordable, around R5500 including the Kona P2 rigid fork. The sliding dropout system is great, I've changed ratios quite a bit looking for the right gear and its been really easy. The only complaint I have is that the paint on the sliders is cracking off, but other than that, a great bike. I am running an Ikon 2.2 on the back and there is easily clearance to go bigger. I have ridden it back to back with a Peace 29r and the Peace feels a little dead on some of the hits. Not sure if this is due to the weight difference or the difference in tubing material. my 2c
  21. 2013 Kona Unit is within your price range and comes with a rigid fork. Give Maverick Cycles a call.

  23. Yip. Very tempting.
  24. I see the new Pipedream Skookum has a split stay for beltdrive. www.pipedreamcycles.com
  25. It's a thick rubber strip, almost like the Bontrager strip, but rubbery, not plastic. Comes with separate valves, packed in a plastic packet with the card stapled on top. They were at the start of the queue at last year's 94.7 expo with the blue sealant.
