  3. @tiny k: nice riding with you man, bummer about your chain - missed you in the dash to the line! i see our group nailed the course, came in earlier than the sv's, nice one! @touristvisa: good to see you after the race. well done on your time, you must be stoked! see you guys at the next one
  4. with an ipad i'd be too concerned about it falling off the top of the cistern into the bowl
  5. and then what happened? next time try and get into double figures, the cynics here will take you more seriously.
  6. I have a set of cosmics (sl version, clincher, 52mm). they aren't as light as the other wheelsets mentioned here, but i've found that they roll really smoothly and are strong and stiff. they're perfect for me, being a slightly heavier guy who can push a bit on the flats. the first time i used them in a funride i finished a minute ahead of my start group so i'm sold. just remember deep sections really only make a difference if you're a strong rider who can keep a high tempo on the flats (say 35-40km/h) and will suit guys who need the aero advantage to keep a high tempo on the front or make a break. failing that you're probably sitting in the bunch where they aren't doing any good, or you're a 100 pound nothing and are waiting for the climbs in which case you'd be better off with the shallowest, lightest rims you can afford! that being said, good tyres help so much more than anything else. hope that helps.
  7. came off round there in april landing heavily on my shoulder (completely my fault - foot slipped on pedal, very embarrasing). my bike, backpack, lights, various contents of my back pockets and i were spreadeagled all over the road. 8am in the morning (peak hour) and the traffic just drove around the scene without a care. amazing. like a friend of mine once told me that at the end of a telephone conversation with a local skateboarding shop assistant, the guy said: "ok, skate safe! (click)"
  8. for coughs - vicks on the soles of your feet before bed.
  9. southern suburbs to town commute is a real bummer. the school traffic through newlands/rondebosch means every road in this area is clogged pretty much from 7-9am. the cycle lanes that are available for use in this area see you criss-crossing major roads all over the place and taking your chances with schoolkids in the mornings and joggers in the afternoons - becomes more of an xc course i guess with moving obstacles - not really my thing, you understand! the only cycle lane worth anything is the few km's from the park way into obs (where it randomly dies) but after trying it 5 times and puncturing 3 times (devil thorns after grass cutting), i'll stick to the road instead. i take main rd (i ride from lakeside) almost all the way and switch onto campground which becomes liesbeeck park way. main rd is not exactly ideal (gets a little hairy in wynberg!), but at least everyone is moving fairly slowly and not shooting past you like on, say, spaanschemat. good luck!
  10. no, must be italian, precisely matched to frameset and wheels by date (year AND month), colour coordinated, white bar tape, shaved legs, arms and chest (for those open jersey mountain climbing days). do this or take up golf - i have a set of brassies and some chequered plus fours for ya!
  11. just ride more... (i heard that somewhere)
  12. they originally made touring equipment, then started making aluminium framed bicycles in the early 80's. the story i read somewhere is that sometime in the 80's they employed some fancy engineer or the other to look into the prospect of this new fangled carbon fibre stuff for making frames. so the guy started by creating something to test a carbon frame against, i.e. the best al frame he could come up with. it turned out that the performance of that aluminium frame was so good that they decided to stick with the metal for the time being.

  14. the shifters vs rd/fd debate is frankly bollocks - i was running 105 10sp shifters with a shimano 600 (8 speed) rd and fd at one point - no probs. the reach is the same from 8sp to 10sp (just the cog spacing changes). the rd/fd have no influence on the indexing.
  15. Bit of background: We were in a two-man break off the front of the A-E group yesterday with about 30km to go. After figuring we had a good shot at riding all the way to the finish (bunch didn't appear to be chasing), he admitted that his legs were shot and that if he could take a smaller share of the work he wouldn't contest the finish. Anyway, true to his word he sat behind me as we rode over the mats ahead of the group. Nice riding with you, man! Kudos also to Brothers Sport for picking sportsmen of integrity to represent their brand.
  16. Using HRR (aka Karvonen formula) is simply a different method for calculating your training zones taking into account your RHR (which differs from person to person based on genetics, fitness and whether they prefer a morning BM or an afternoon BM, um, or both!)
  17. "The experimenters got the subjects to hold their arms in near to boiling water for up to a minute." poor form: sounds like the the name of science has once again been tainted just so that a bunch of closet sadists can get their rocks off!
  18. The WHR-601 freehub is "10-speed specific" - can't use 9 or 8 speed either (something to do with a modified freehub flange design to force you to upgrade!) I have a set of these wheels, but haven't got a 7 speed cassette to try on there so I'm afraid you're only going to check the above one way, just see if it works.
  19. yeah, that's not so cool. i thought they'd at least wait for you, that's a bummer, man. "sometimes you eat the bar and, well, sometimes the bar eats you" http://dudeism.com/
  20. sun morning - you're the only tall dude i know in metropolitan kit who rides a bianchi! group of us were heading in the other direction. see you on the flatlands sometime, dude!
  21. good, and try to be a little more subtle next time you take a leak on the side of liesbeeck parkway during a group ride
  22. if the guy's an absolute beginner, get an el cheapo second hand alu bike off the hub for a few grand to see if cycling's even his bag. stands to lose much more if he goes all out and spends R20k only to find out he prefers bowling. friend of mine (mtb'er) got a decent silverback road bike with tiagra from a lbs - turned out he wasn't much into road and sold it a couple months later for not too much less. fwiw, R20000 should get you quite a bike right now - saw a cannondale supersix with 105 (?!) on for R17500 at olympic cycles a couple weeks back. my 2c, anyway.
  23. some cyclists are just more suited to standing or sitting than others. power to weight may have an effect - i've always heard that bigger guys prefer sitting as they can crank easier while seated, while little guys are more comfortable out of the saddle (cue phil and paul) "dancing on the pedals". that being said, my cousin and i have similar physiologies and he'll climb out of the saddle all the way up suikerbossie while i'll stay seated just grinding away (and grimacing...) weird.
  24. buddy of mine shared his system with me when i asked him the same question. in essence he rides late afternoons before breaking fast and watches his intensity like a hawk to prevent bonking. sometimes after his evening meals he then spends time on the IDT. it's a little more complicated than what i laid out here, but respect where it's due, can't be easy!
  25. was thinking exactly the same thing when i saw that... have we all become cynical or is this now the way of things?
