  1. still is, although he was probably a whopping 900g heavier then, note to self: change avatar
  2. Isn't that going the iBike (?) approach? Thing thingy that measures wind resistance and all' date=' and is pretty much universally denounced as useless... [/quote'] Yes the i bike thingy was a good idea but (i believe and stand to be corrected) relys on the measurement of airflow, which as we can be rather iffy. What I was suggesting was not to measure airflow but to rather use the effort as recorded on a hrm and convert this to watts. Power measurement and recording is obviously more accurate by the use of strain gauges or other mechanical devices that react in relation to the "power" appllied, but they are not cheap especially when you try to fit them onto weight concious bicycles. Therefore I was wondering about a conversion factor being incorporated into a HRM software using the already vast amount of power VS heart data that has been gathered over the last few years. Granted it might not be 100% accurate (how do you know for sure your current power device is 100% correct all the time), but as long as it remains consistent, this would be cheaper than the available options of power measuring devices. The Power Fundis on this forum are going to hang you from a tree for suggesting this!! Gumpole2008-04-24 04:39:56
  3. will there be any TV (DSTV not cyclingTV) coverage? I am looking forward to watching Cancellara win it!
  4. i think some of the advantages of a compact not mentioned before are: pros: (if you dont need the 53-12), you can use a 12-23 cluster instead of a 12-25, so the gear ratios are closer to each other... or rather spaced out better! pros: compared to a 12-25 cluster you use a 11-23 with a 50/36 crank... and the 50/11 is faster than the 53/12, also the 36/23 is slower or easier than the 39/25. only marginally but if you are riding a 12-25 on the back you should rather be using a compact. pros: (I think) the 36 ring can easily be changed to a 34 for ultra hilly routes (maybe mpumalanga) or left as 36 for Argus and other 'normal' hills. cons: with the 39-53 and an 11-23 you can change the cassette or get a pair of lightweight wheels and install a 12-27 for hilly routes. A compact cannot be changed to go faster (until somebody invents a 10-21!!)
  5. I've got a 725 which I use for HR and altitude (and the little post ride downloadable graph of HR/ALtitude/ speed ).. but i still rely on my old cateye for current speed, ave speed and distance readings while I ride...
  6. do the FLX, the 909 and the 907 all have the same frame with different paintjobs and components? or is it like the Madones where there is actually a difference? Had a look at a 907 recently and was a little surprised at how heavy it was! BUT this is one of the most beautiful bikes around!!
  7. Favourites: challenging, scenic, low entries 1. Jock 2.Bergendale, Cradle Classic Least favourites - crash heaven! 1. H2H, fast one 2. R4S 3. Argus undecide3d: 94.7 - best organisation, still too many crashes though
  8. wheres the front wheel????? or do you hook her on another bike to form a tandem
  9. when people say calorie they normally mean KCal.. very confusing
  10. http://www.cyclechallenge.co.za/downloads/routemap2008.pdf . online entries are also open. so the organisers have cutout more hills and the route spends 5.6km in the Jhb CBD!!
  11. my advice, following on from Slowpoke, would be to ride the smaller more interesting races that normally have 600 to 1200 people in the race not in a start group! (Jock, Kremetert, Cradle) and while some people are inept and co-ordless in handling a bike I dont think that is the main problem - look at the crashes in groups A to D vs Open ZZ to the back of the field. The top groups have guys that have been cycling for a good few years and train on the road for hundreds of hours per year seem to have the biggest crashes!! I reckon if you got every protour rider and reserve and the euro pros to fill a race with 710 people, start them all at the same time, make sure that they are all racing as individuals (each one must believe he is a team leader who is racing to win) and them enter them into a fast, flattish short race and see what will happen - mayhem do the same thing in the argus with less talented riders - also mayhem!
  12. from a building perspective alu. and stainless steel are never mixed due to corrosion, so there is usually a seperating tape is used. in your case maybe there is some other 'sacrificial' anode which will corrode in its place - like in a geyser, so his explanation sounds correct... could be this wasn't replaced in one of the previous services. are you diving in easter?
  13. he might have won a stage in his first tour (or maybe it was his second) with lampre when he was in a break with team-mates, unfortunately crap team tactics prevented him from winning on the day... he would also have ended up in yellow with time bonus if I remember correctly!
  14. only if you are (refer to Chunky's reply), next time I will insert a
  15. jaa, i think formula 1 has already got there moneys worth for the few minutes of barend ahead of the argus, in an aero tuck.
  16. yes, David is nothing but a terrible queue pusher, supported by drug pushers!!
  17. ...speaking about my 40k bike, this just came in the mail... its a sign . Your e-mail address was attach to the ticket number 008995727495 in the Random Computer Selection System (RCSS). 18. ag nee Oom... I dont have 40k bike and the only way I'll do a 3 hour Argus is if they move the finish to the base of Suikerbossie!
  19. you should see the what happens to doctors, lawyers and engineers in there 30/40/50s when they attend football matches - same mob basic instincts come to the fore. (p.s. when I have paid R40k for a bike and I am racing to break 3 hours in the Argus, for which I have dedicated maybe hundreds of training hours and I am riding on a road dedicated to me for the day, which I have paid for with my taxes.....then marshalls, paramedics and banged up cyclists must %^**&^&*& off out of my way!)
  20. Looks like the rebirth of the Scottish Master Race... maybe Millar will win the Tour in it??
  21. is this an exercise to increase leg speed or do you propose that one should 'always' ride in this manner?
  22. Interestsing article jason, but I think a lot of BS!! the writer seems to be swop what muscle groups get used for what cadence. I believe that riding up a hill (under duress obviously) or trying to keep in a break or TTing on your own or hanging onto the back of the pack in a cross wind are all the same.... ride at the cadence (and the gearing) that is comfortable/ natural for you. Similarly train in this way. Only way to improve hills is to increase power or lose weight, which aren't necessarily achieved by spinning at a high cadence <?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
  23. RXS, when I bought the RXE they had no RXE in stock, so I got the RXS... R300 more and I think I save 25grams or something. (RXE are grey)
