  1. Thats an interesting point Porks, not sure what is meant by "Junior" as its open to interpretation, but I read it as "under 16"??? I could very well be wrong.? However, if so, kids of 16 and younger, need to be behind a school desk not in Europe riding a bicycle, I couldnt agree more.!
  2. Is there such a trade as a "Bike Mechanic"?? I cant imagine so, I am fairly sure any competant tradesman (and by that I mean someone who has learnt a trade and passed a test) could quickly learn how to CORRECTLY repair a bike, but as someone said most shops use the cheapest labour they can find, who really have no idea of mechanical principles. Then when / if something happens, they either lie low and wait for the fuss to blow over or disappear to re-appear in another province under another name.! Sound familiar.?
  3. On a serious note............. In the USA if a shop sells you a bike they have to show you how to remove and replace a wheel, then you have to demonstate to the salesman that you understand and can effect the removal and replacement of both wheels, and you have to sign on the invoice that you have been shown how a wheel skewer works and the implication of not closing it properly. You also have to sign that you have inspected the bike, and are satisfied its safe to ride before they will let you out of the shop. Personally, I dont have a problem with this, too many shops here will just grab your credit card, hand over the bike and wave you goodbye. There needs to be more accountability in retail in SA if we hope to improve service. Just as an aside, some years ago I did a scuba course in the Florida Keys, after every lecture I had to sign that I fully understood the lecture, I had no questions, the lecture covered all the requirements of the course and I was fully aware of the dangers and implications of scuba diving. Then before every training dive, I had to sign an indemnity and after every dive I had to sign that I was safely back on the boat, I had no physical problems, my equipment had not malfunctioned and I had understood the requirements of the dive and I had no further questions. Over the top,.............. to us here maybe,......... because we just fly by the seat of our pants, but in the USA litigation is so rife, that your chances of getting sued are pretty good if your paperwork isnt up to scratch.....................But, this legal implication is one of the prime reasons customer service is so good - something we here tend to forget.
  4. Michael Ball has a reputation for extravigance and a flair for fashion, all aimed at making a buck or two and his eye catching kit shows this to perfection. ...................Just a pity he dosnt pick his riders with as much care.! Based on that, "Nope", I wouldnt buy his teams kit.
  5. Hmm, sounds like we have quite a few un-official mods here. There was a post a while back - I didnt reply - about, Have you ever Reported a post? - well,....... I along with Scotty, Linnega, Cruxpearl, Big H and a few others have been here since day 1,............ and I have never yet FELT the need to report a post, and can honestly say I never will.!! I will always be prepared to listen to anothers point, discuss it in a friendly manner, say my piece and move on.No hidden agendas. If I find their opinions / posts offensive to me, I just flip onto another post. They have as much right as me to make a statement. I really dont agree with the "report" button, if you find a post offensive, racial, demeaning, say so in public and make your rational behind the reason known, or dont read it and move on. Lets leave the folk designated to deal with this to do so. Linnega and Crux are quite able to make sane rational decisions, its quite unnecessary to have a panel of unofficial mods with an agenda.
  6. Hmm, Yes, an incredible athlete is Jeannie, and tough as nails as well. To be at that level for so long in any sport is inspiring, but to be at that level and "still competitive" is just incredible!.
  7. Hmm, maybe, I didnt see anything wrong with the posts I read, but I fail to see how one person can be judge, jury and executioner. A little like "to much censorship" - not a good thing. ...........had to edit my grammar........!!widget2008-05-09 05:21:53
  8. I was away and didnt see that post, but even if I had (and I have no issues saying I consider myself a Christian) - I would not have been offended. Everybody is entitled to their own beliefs.
  9. Good question, I just came back from a customer now and its gone. I cant see any problem with the thread, if there was a valid reason or there was a rash of complaints, good and well lets hear about it here in public.!
  10. I think there are a lot of people who will tell you what to do with your life. But the fact is,.... "its your life". You can choose to be happy and joyous, purposefull and content no matter what the circumstances or where you are. Or you can choose to be miserable, jelous and envious of what others may have or their standards or living enviroment. Only you can choose to make the best of what you have and where you are, only you can make the choice between been happy and been miserable. Been happy and content is not conditional on where you live or what you have, its a state of mind, you just have to aim for it.
  11. Hmmm, basically he had exemption for three (3) inhalations, he took (a lot) more and was caught. Thats doping. ..............anyway a little birdie has told me that PATXI VILA from Lampre has tested positive for testosterone - which would explain his hasty "mid race" retreat from the Tour of Romandy!! We shall have to wait and see, but.................! ......................Patxi wasnt the only cyclist to leave mid race now was he..............................hmmm, I wonder.?
  12. I dont know anymore, I really dont. !! Legit cycling related questions and discussions - 6 replies and three of them irrelevant. Crap about Gareth Cliff - 14 pages.!!! Makes me weep.! widget2008-05-06 07:01:28
  13. - for all I know, you could be right.!
  14. What the hell is a "Rivinut"?????
  15. ..........Hmmm,I can understand you want to raise the issue, and fair enough, its topical, but I dont think we are going to break any new ground here.! "Majority rules" - and as far as I know there are at least 30x more cars than bikes on the road, if you want to behave like an idiot, make sure your insurance policy is up to date so your wife and kids dont starve, and dont expect me to attend your Memorial ride.!
  16. I guess, if the organisers made it known ahead of time no prize money would be awarded, its rather a difficult point to raise now. ...........but this is not unusual, even in some of the races locally, there is only prizes for the first three over the line and no age cat prizes (ie) Vets. Personally, I think a relevant prize should be awarded to all the top three place finishers in all cats, this need not be of huge monetary value, just relevant, I mean most cyclists would happily accept a set of cycling clothing as a prize, but a "moon bag and a toaster" is going to be frowned upon. !!
  17. - sharp today eh?
  18. I was lost a long time ago on page one. .............but just for interest, if you intend production runs, you will need tooling, and thats hideously expensive. I recently had a tool made in China for a plastic componant with our name on it, around $5000.00 per tooling. SA quote - R60,000.00 for the same thing, - obviously it depends on the work, but tooling costs are still a substantial investment.
  19. Yes, a nice gesture Porky. These big trucks are really dangerous, many times I have seen my life flash before my eyes when I have been passed by them, and its even worse if you are not expecting it or didnt hear them coming up behind. Helping your fellow human is something I am passionate about, we are here to help each other, unfortunately we get so busy and tied up we forget, but then one reads posts like this and it sort of re-invigorates me.
  20. The UCI has mismanaged cycling especially on a pro level for years, and must hold a large portion of the blame for the mess its in now. The ASO has done what they could, for years they negotiated with Verbruggen to no avail, witness the UCI stance "We are cleaning up cycling - drug abuse - we will do better to clean up cycling - drug abuse and so on, so who can blame them for looking after themselves. ASO has a massive investment in cycling which it is keen to protect, and as doping is a criminal offense in France, for ASO to use the French Cycling federation which has legal status is probably the right decision to prevent future doping issues. Certainly the UCI has not proved itself to be competant at doing it. Personally I dont think it will do anything to appease tensions, especially if there is an issue. widget2008-04-04 03:23:20
  21. I would have no problems with Pound as president of the CAS. ..................I can tell you what will happen to Landis and his ilk then.! widget2008-04-02 01:43:01
  22. Hein Verbruggen has used cycling as his play thing for years, he turned a blind eye when he knew full well the extent of the doping issues going on in the pro peleton (and locally) he couldnt have cared less about the riders or the disasterous effects of the doping culture he ignored. His only interest was one of power, cycling was a way to riches and noteriety and he trampeled on the heads of everybody who stood in his way, and let an ailing sport fall into critical condition by his ineptitude and disregard. Now he instigates legal action against the only person who had the balls to stand up to him and expects him to just continue as before............Verbruggen is like a dinosaur, he wantonly destroys the very source of his existance and cant see himself doing it. I hope he is ready for a fight, Dick pound has never hiden from one before and I am fairly sure he has some "grimy" info on the great Verbruggen which he will be only too happy to use in a public court and gallery - sadly the biggest looser here will be Professional cycling which will again be dragged backwards through the mud - Farewell Hein, you wont be missed. widget2008-04-01 01:22:53
