  1. The stretch of road from the cradle to Beyers, corner beyers and northumberland, is a no go for me. You risk your own life using that stretch of road there is hardly any shoulder there and little enough space for cars. If you get a flat down that stretch of road you in trouble one way or the other.
  2. Maybe now I can convince Nedbank to sponsor me for PE IronMan 2013
  3. 12k laps for 24hrs ... urgghh I'm dizzy already
  4. Garf what you up to lad ? There's a few events early next year 2013. 70.3, Buffelspoort ultra and of course iron man in PE. Are you gonna be doing any of these ?
  5. Yip. I have triple speed shifter with double chainring and FD. Same if you got triple FD. I have done both. Just adjust the limit screws.
  6. I do my own Olympic distance race every Tuesday and Thursday at Kyalami for R20 except no swimming. I'll do the swim in the morning at Gym
  7. Agree totally. The only reason why I do 5150 is cause the wife and kids enjoy the resort. Its become an annual family long weekend. BUT if the race fees get any higher I will very quickly put the brakes on that as well.
  8. I like. They need to implement this in Joburg on Oxford road going through Rosebank. Buses are a major issue here especially early morning. Cant even remember the number of close shaves I have had. The buses also seriously exceed the speed limit. If I was a traffic cop I would be making a few arrests every morning.
  9. Hassle is it is triathlon season. Theres a bunch of races at least 1 a month for this summer. At R350 to R500 a pop it starts costing. At R750 No way ! I dont mind paying R750 for races like Midlands Ultra but I sure as hell am not paying R750 to go to sun city. Never mind all the other costs involved like wife, kids valley of waves, casino lunch etc. End the day it can cost thousands never mind the R750 reg fee.
  10. Just to amend my post above. NO I wont be at this years event. Just got a shocker : price tag for entry is R750 Theres no way I'm paying R750. Things are really getting out of hand here. Last year it was about 55 dollars which equated to just under R500. I suppose the organizers are trying to make up for lost revenue for last years race when the timing equipment failed and they opted to refund competitors some of the registration fees. Well I'm not impressed.
  11. Anyone doing this for the first time ? the run is HOT and HILLY so be prepared. Swim and cycle easy. I will be there. Been working hard on those brick sessions especially hilly brick sessions. Kyalami race track is the perfect place for this. A quick 10 laps gives you 42km's followed by 2 hard and fast laps of running will sort you.
  12. Thats dangerous. Fortunately my wife said so beforehand. I just added a little fuel to the fire. Got asked this morning to bring the roman bench down from the roof and set it up in the bedroom. Now we getting serious !
  13. I need to add something perhaps I am wrong if so someone let me know. I'm a little stickler for rules. The reason for this is that as a novice to this sport I have been burnt a few times over the years because I was ignorant of a few rules. Now when you organize a race of this sort you clearly, or you should, state all the requirements for race including essential and compulsory kit. So at the olympic transition gate there's this kid who pitches and he has a black swim cap. The referee at the gate would not let the kid in and simply said no bright cap no enter. So yes I agree with this from a safety point of view BUT you need to make this clear. I had looked the day before and could find no such requirements had been published. So if you dont publish the rules and requirements you cannot on the day turn wannabees away. You as the organizer need to make it abundantly clear what is required. We did actually pay R400 to participate ! Anyway I was really peeved off and in the end gave the kid a spare orange speedo swim cap so he could partake.
  14. Wow thats brilliant lad. Keep it up.
  15. Wish I had a budget of R4k. My Garmin 305 is so BIG I could very well use it as a weapon of mass destruction. I will have to wait for December to see what my bonus looks like and just how much of that will go on my kids varsity fees. Anyway must just say I have been most impressed with my garmin 305 so if I were you I would be looking in that direction except for something smaller.
  16. So my wife is not into sports at all. She has tolerated my fascination with Triathlon with disdain affection mostly. So I win a R500 voucher from Troisport at the recent Midlands Ultra and an evil idea comes to mind. I head to Troi and ask for a pair of running shoes in size 5, NO the size 5 is not for me. I end up with a flashy pair of zoot's that even I am jealous of. I have to contend with asics. Anyway the wife is most impressed with her Zoot's because at the Ultra she said all the vinnige chicks were wearing these flashy shoes. And guess what ? everyday this last week she has been putting these shoes on early morning and doing a 3k run/walk thing around our block. Most impressive what ?
  17. cleaning them and anti fog I am assuming is two different things. yesterday at the Joburg City Tri my goggles fogged up in the middle of the race completely. i had to tread water for a minute while i took them off dipped them in the water and then put em back on again. someone said to me if you wash them with baby shampoo the lenses dont fog. clearly this does NOT work. cleans well enough though.
  18. race was good yesterday. must say MDW I prefer non-wetsuit. I get really claustrophobic in my wetsuit especially when I wear tri-suit under as well. feels like a bear is about to throttle me. no matter how many times i wear the damn thing its always the same. this true especially for sprints and olympic. for ultra + i dont wear tri suit so this becomes less of an issue for me.
  19. How's doing the race tomorrow at Germies 28 Oct 2012 ? Any predictions as to whether or not it will be wetsuit legal ? Any ideas as to water quality considering recent rains etc ?
  20. I'm doing Joburg Tri tomorrow at Germies that should prove interesting especially as we just had rain recently ...
  21. Yip ! with 3 arms and 5 legs just joking. the water is good.
  22. I always find it funny how SOME of the "larger" riders I have met who ride expensive bikes do so because one they have the money and two they want to get the latest, greatest and importantly the "lightest" bike. So they are prepared to shed ooodles of cash to get the lightest bike around but could easily do with a 10k bike until they lost a few (ok more than just a few ) kilo's around their mid rifs.

    2012 94.7

So my xmas leave gets cancelled this year because I'm the newby on the block and the rest of the gang got in before me. So turns out the only weekend I can get in my sun city time is over the same weekend as 94.7 . So no xmas leave, no 94.7. Best I enjoy sin city then
  24. Unless you going for podium position whats the rush ? garf does t1 in 2m I do it in 4m. in my 4m i get to survey the scenery, watch the chaos from the outside, develop a smile, take in the hot babes watching, give my wife a kiss, stroll into t1 and casually do my stuff.
  25. And you managed to swim faster than me ( 1 minute ) and I had a whole bunch of swimming training. Must say though I cruised the swim when I got out the water I could easily have done another 2k's even had time to have a quick chat to the wife and get a good luck kiss. Lets not mention the frikken calf cramp in the middle of the swim !!!???
