  1. Ja what can I say a whole 38 minutes slower than my last race at Germiston. Winter and the snuffles . I suppose its a good kicker for the season just to show me how *** and unfit I am and best I get my **** together for midmar
  2. If i think of the effort in terms of training etc and then the cost of going to EL or Bela Bela then you get DQ'd for some stupid reason. Just wish the ref would consider those facts as well.
  3. Last year I walked out of transition with my water bottle in hand. Later after transition was closed I realized my mistake went back and handed the bottle to one of the ref's BIG mistake. The guy shat his pants and told the chickie at the desk to give me an immediate penalty. So i had a penalty and the race had'nt even started. The ref did'nt even say what colour card nor did he mention exactly what an immediate penalty meant especially as there was'nt a penalty area near transition when I enquired the guy threw a temper tantrum and marched off in the opposite direction. The chickie at the desk just shrugged her shoulders. So anyway I ASSUMED incorrectly that an immediate penalty meant they would simply deduct 2 minutes off my time. BIG mistake. What I should have done was reported to the penalty tent during the bike leg. But what was i gonna say ? what color card you got old man ? Anyway I got disqualified. When I asked Werner afterwards he said the ref said I arrived late at transition which was a total fabrication and that was that. Ref decision was final. I will keep my thoughts of what I think of the ref as a person to myself. I see the same ref often at races and boy one day I will get my ....
  4. I had considered asking my wife to keep my bottles and then hand them to me at the bike exit BUT did'nt want to incur the wrath of the ref and get myself disqualified. I had enough of that last year.
  5. I thought the organization was pretty good. I see Werner even had a Penalty area at transition ... I wonder why Pity about the after party that did not happen. Next time put TV's in both the VIP and the public beer tent then you gonna have more people stay. After all I had to see the Lions beat WP and I could'nt see the picture in the VIP tent from the public tent. My wife is a blue bulls fan so say no more ... The one thing I totally disliked was the intense heat coming out of winter it was not fun. Think we can start earlier next year ? The other thing I did not enjoy were my 2 very hot water bottles ... not sure if anyone has an answer for that. I ended up getting totally dehydrated and made a pig of myself at the water stations during the run and then could'nt run. I had a really nice walk about in the dam it was fun really. I managed to totally exfoliate the bottoms of my feet See ya all at Midmar
  6. This was question was asked earlier but no reply - Where would you buy a bag of tar from and how much does it cost ?
  7. As expected 3h37 for me. Had a great swim (25m) but everything fell apart after that even my bike. Struggled with my chest after a bout of flu. Lets hope for a greatly improved Midmar.
  8. The main bunch leaves 5am sharp. The route could be anything from 40 to 60k's and generally takes about 1.5 hrs. The bunch currently consists of hard core all winter A group riders who do nothing under 30k's an hour. I suspect that from Monday onwards the bunch will get more interesting with all sorts of slower riders joining, like me. Depending on yr fitness you will end up riding in a bunch suited to your fitness. What usually happens is the slower groups use shortcuts to try keep up with the A group and finish by 6h30. So in the beginning your distance will probably be about 40k's then as you manage to keep up with the faster groups it will increase as you take less shortcuts. Just a word of warning you need to know the route more or less. If you get blown off the back of a group you are on your own until another group, if there is one, catch's up with you. This is a Mon-Fri ride and is NOT club specific and there is no club representation whatsoever. So if you see guys cruising through red robots and stop streets don't point fingers.
  9. Well it looks like summer is eventually on its way for us Randburg / Sandton based folks. As I cruised to work this morning at 5h45 the temperature did not drop below 11.5 degrees and was quite pleasant. This should be good news to all of you who may be like me and abhor cycling in near zero temperatures. So with about 6 weeks to go I know what I will be doing most mornings from now till Oct 7. See you good folks at the Engen garage on main street ready to ride 5am sharp.
  10. Yesterday I decided to see if my FLU was sorted so went went for a quick 10k. It was slow and arduous, zero energy levels, but the ticker seems fine although resting heart rate still seems slightly higher than my normal 55. Gonna go for a quick 1.5k swim today and then I will see you good folks by the dam on Saturday avie. Its not going to be a great event for me time wise but at least I will be there. NICE Bike GARF i'm soooooo jealous.
  11. Licensing can get very expensive especially if you are into Triathlon. Yes do you need separate licenses for running, cycling and of course TRI SA. Of course then the club fees tend to be expensive as well and can be as much as R800 per year in addition to your licensing costs. The questions you have to ask yourself is How many events am I going to partake in ? Is licensing for these events compulsory or can I buy a day license? Is the cost for day licenses more than the annnual cost for a license ? What other benefits do I get by buying into the license scheme ? Personally I think triathletes should pay a single license and this should replace the current running and cycling licenses. You should not have to register again for cycling and running. Currently I have paid TSA license and cycle license. I pay day license fees for runs and I am not a tri club member, dont really see any major benefit in doing so.
  12. Hey post a pic here of your new Felt so i can check it out
  13. Spot on. I ride motorcycle to work everyday so to me its natural to have the brakes the same side on my motorbike and bicycles.
  14. The only issue I have starting in the wave just before the girls is that the fast swimmers in the girls wave will almost certainly catch up and literally run you over. I do a 1.5k in about 35 mins at the moment, not much winter training, but the fast girls will be cruising and do the distance in about 15m+. At sun city I had the lead girls about 5 of them swim right over me like I was not even there. One of them kinda looked back to see what it was they run over and cruised on.
  15. Well I suppose you may not be an old fart. At 47 I think I am in the old farts age group anyway .
  16. I am in wave 3 (old farts) think its 13h15. Normally I would do this in about 3hrs without much fuss. Perhaps if I am not 100% I will take it easy and watch the heart rate but I suppose best not take any chances I dont want to miss Oct 7 at Midmar.
  17. I will be there family kids the whole 9 yards. BUT I got flu at the moment so may not be racing. If I am not better by the weekend I'll support the beer tent
  18. and I suppose when you wear a wetsuit you DONT look like a seal ?
  19. I always thought the length of the crank arms required was dependent on the size of your frame and your personal body geometry. 175mm seems to be the norm for most people. I never really did quite understand how a mere 2.5mm could make any difference at all.
  20. maybe we can get him to sort out the hippo at heia safari once and for all
  21. Meat free Monday's in my house is a complete no no. Its more like a carnivore celebration ... roast pork, roast beef ...
  22. Try some magnesium supplement. It works for me. I only ever get calf cramps kicking off the wall in the pool. Never been able to explain it. I can cycle and run for hours never a problem put me in a pool and theres an issue.
  23. its the claw abandon canoe
  24. why dont you just change the rear cassette to a 11-23 instead. what size cassette do you currently have ?
  25. What about Sharks ? Someone said to me if you managed to escape off the island you would'nt get far anyway cause the sharks would get you.
