  1. see you in court buddy
  2. I didn't have him in mind, at all.....
  3. The new Protection from Harassment Act allows for an aggrieved party to take out a protection order against a harasser, if that harasser breaches the protection order it could be a fine or 5 years in prison. Harassment is broadly defines and includes electronic harassment, including any unreasonable conduct that causes or inspires the fear of harm - mental, physical, economic or psychological. Anonymity on the hub is also not going to help you, the cops can demand that a service provider provides info to track someone down. So we all have to play nice now, perhaps stick to the post your pets and help a lady threads Perhaps its time to look at some of those other forums that threaten to ride cyclists off the road
  4. Depends on where you commute, in some areas in Cape Town it is acceptable to great, think Durbanville around the vineyards or farmlands, perhaps while cruising through Simon's Town or going around the point. But please don't for a minute think that I am going to nod my Kask helmet in Sky colours or lift my Assos begloved hand to you or even raise my eyebrows behind my Rudy Projects when I am riding to Vida in Camps Bay, Cruising to Cafe Nero in Mouille Point or even "slumming it" in Kalk Bay when going to Olympia. Silly boy
  5. Seems that there is a bit of a sentiment to allow doping for fun-riders, no harm no foul, someone said. I say bollocks some back of the packer turns up dead from EPO or has an aneurism from a steroid use in a race like the Epic or even the argus it is seriously bad news for the organisers, they cannot and should not allow it. Allowing drug use (and I am not suggesting that this dude did this) to give someone a bit of a pick me up because he is short on training or ability is ludicrous. There is merit in random testing, it means that some hacker, who has some cash to spend or a mate who drives an ambulance, is going to think twice before sticking something into his body that is going to harm them.
  6. When you have the "moral high ground" you can do what you want apparently
  7. This is really a bit silly but is actually a big problem for the dude. The problem is that when you sign up to do the Epic you agree to the rules which include no use of banned sporting substances. Most of us take whatever the Doc prescribes for us without thinking, I suppose he should have told the doc or pharmacist that he was partaking in the Epic and that he needs a TUE or an alternative. Crazy days!
  8. I thought that the Gu brew was pretty good, I did the run on a Gu washed down with a brew at each aid station and was fine, no GI problems and felt pretty good
  9. I agree with the sentiment that you are setting forth, I think. Which I think is that SA has a systemic problem of making excuses for itself as a reason not to change, be it blaming the big A, crime, unemployment whatever....The prevailing attitude is so averse to doing anything positive and rather making excuses that nothing changes and nothing gets done.
  10. Now that's the sort of attitude that we all know and love in SA. It cant be fixed so don't even try. Until the '70's most cities around the world didn't have a bike lane, cycling commutors didn't exist. Cities started to choke on their motor fumes, oil security was at an all time low. So people started to change, massive changes that can work here. In other cities there are car free zones on weekends, speed limits are down to 30 km/h, hundreds of Km's of lanes have been built. This is what needs to happen here and there is no reason that it cant. No reason at all beyond a lazy, can't do attitude
  11. IMO there is a huge role for political will, in the Cape we are starting to see a shift towards a more cycle friendly city, this means more cycle lanes and more awareness about cyclists. Once a city has a bike ethos such as, Amsterdam, Copenhagen Berlin, Rio, Portland, etc... and 1) cyclists are seen as a large, well behaved civilised group and 2) most motorists are either cyclists are have family members that are cyclists, there is a fundamental change to the attitude of motorists, town planners, police, politicians etc... Unfortunately in CT there are some very simple opportunities that are just not being taken, such as: New roads being built or upgraded without cycle lanes being added. Neighbourhoods are planned and designed to be unfriendly to cyclists There is no signage on busy cycling routes, traffic control infrastructure largely ignores cyclists No enforcement for Cars parked in cycle lanes and the general abuse of bike lanes in the city No requirement for cycle parking and showers in new commercial developments (this is often the case in the UK) Traffic officers (based on my observation) have never taken an interest in enforcing cycle safety
  12. Do some cross training, cycling alone is pretty inefficient, running will help you quicker, throw in some swimming as well
  13. Thanks for the tip, this will help a lot
  14. 50 % or so chance of light rain, 23 degrees, and wind is forcast to be light. Not ideal, but should be ok
  15. see you on the bike
  16. Very pumped up for it, Happy with any time under 5:30. Did my last run interval sessions yesterday, long ride on Sat and then its all taper, woooo hooooo, the wife is getting tired of all the training.
  17. Wave 3, you?
  18. Its not a Town Planning issue its a transport planning issue, Council needs to adopt the approach that whenever they upgrade a section of road they simply add a cycle lane, it is a cost issue of course, roads are damn expensive. But it should go into the budget each time a road upgrade is proposed. New roads, should as a matter of course have a 1 m cycle lane on each side.
  19. I read a comment somewhere (also to one of these types of articles) that cyclists are all on drugs and ride expensive bikes so they go much faster than you expect and are thus more dangerous. Got to laugh at the logic of some of these lemmings.
  20. Spot on Covie, I often get words from riders when I stop at a red light and block the cyclists who want to cruse on through (granted I stop at an angle to bock them coming through). I head out from Lakeside, obey the robots and what not until Simons Town, there are only 6 robots on the way, and on average I hit half of them red, so thats only three short stops, I know how to unclip and can use my gears so it isnt a problem for me. Then I have a free run of 37 km without a robot (one stop street in Scarborough) though to Sun Valley. As you say its about picking your route. I always avoid routes like the Main Road, riding through Town etc... because it is just to annoying to stop.
  21. Hoping for 35 min swim T1 5 min Bike 2:50 T2 3 min Run 1:45 Total 5:18 Will be happy with anything under 5:30, the run is the big questionmark
  22. Yip, easterly will be tailwind out (help with the climbing) and headwind back, much better than to climb into the headwind
  23. Oh dear its not a 650B
  24. Rather work 10 Saturdays or public holidays, take time in lieu and go and tour the Tour de France or something, you will put in less "work" time than you would have to train, there is far less pressure and you are certain to get the time off.
  25. I dont see Mr Bicycle Trader wading in on a public forum with an excuse or explanation only to get lynched by everyone here. I would hope that a PM would be sent but wouldn't bet on that either. My advise is to move on, never set foot in his shop again and advise others to do the same.
