  1. All you need is two bottles on the bike and somewhere for tools and nutrition. your Tri Bag is big enough for a tube, levers and bomb and a bar, stick the gels under your shorts legs and a second bar in your back pocket. Don't load yourself up like a camel.
  2. Ditto, I ended up spending a lot more on physio appointments and made my rehab so much longer having neglected to get it sorted ASAP
  3. I have done both sides, a real bugger of an injury, the shoulder is one of the most complicated joints to rehabilitate. I have had to go through some serious physio and lots of rehab exercises to keep mine in shape. If I do the strengthening exercises things are fine, but when I let things go the shoulder goes out of wack and starts to hurt again. Basically a lifetime of maintenance exercises are my medicine, but fortunately they can be done while watching isidingo
  4. Sorry, my worst enemy is the 1 ton lump of metal that is going to make my wife a widow and my kids orphans. Yes some cyclists cycle like idiots, but how badly some people ride does not justify the number of cars that, seemingly without consequence, take cyclists out. There can never by a justifiable excuse for hitting a cyclist. Motorists are just too damn aggressive. I am forced to ride aggressively from time to time, that includes riding my permitted 1 m from the edge of the road and effectively blocking a whole lane when it is not safe for cars to pass me. I would rather be perceived as "inconsiderate" by some motorists than dead.
  5. Sold, I still have four years until I croak
  6. Winter training is suffering, was going to skive off work this afternoon to get a 2 hour trail run in, when the rain started, and I didn't pack for the wet. Realised that I need to pack for all weather and have my swim stuff with me in case I need to revert to a swim and treadmill / stationary bikes session.
  7. Not a great article in my opinion, there is an increased risk of heart attack in the swim yes, but this is often not due to cardiac health alone, but is exacerbated by a number of factors such as a too tight wetsuit, intake of caffeine, panic, in the water etc... There is some good stuff on slowtwitch about deaths in the swim leg of triathlons, worth a read. The changes made to swim starts are good, self seeding, increased boats and lifesavers in the water etc.... a number of the deaths probably could have been if the changes now being made were in place.
  8. I love the look of the planet x bikes and was tempted to get one for tri, I don't think you can go wrong. Felt also make a good bike for road and tri use, it has a pretty aero frame with a little rear wheel cutout and internal cables, with a set of clip on bars you are good to go for tri and road racing, check them out.
  9. fix it with some duct tape, what are you a roadie?
  10. The way I see it derailleurs use bushings and don't need to be lubed, a jockey wheel runs on either a bearing or bushing and just needs a spot of grease from time to time
  11. I personally feel that you should throw nothing on the ground when you are out riding, why leave something foreign lying around for others to look at when you can just take it home. If you must eat a banana, just stick the peel under a rock
  12. I would go for the Ultegra's or the Shimano RS80.
  13. I did 70.3 without a formal program. First set your goals, that will determine what sort of program you need. I knew how much time I had to train and with some experience in shorter tri's knew what was required. I swam 2km once a week, cycled up to 100 km on the weekend with another ride thrown in during the week (around an hour) and ran up to three times a week (max distance 21km) made sure that I did quite a few brick sessions. Ave training week probably around 8 hours with a few big weeks in Nov / Dec up to 12 hours. Did a comfortable 5:45. The no 1 tip is to train through winter, keep your fitness (S, B & R)up so that you dont get overwhelmed when October comes and you need to start from scratch.
  14. I would think a radially spoked wheel would be stronger as force on the wheel from the hub down to the ground is parallel to the spoke itself.
  15. But its just not fair..... as my 3 year old would say (with more volume)
  16. 5. Two road, one TT, one MTB (26er), one vintage single speed. Just need that 29er and a tandem then I think I am one bike away from being done.
  17. I am super glad that they made a plan. A Friday is cool, just another day out of the office, thank goodness I am the boss man.
  18. I think Brownlees have been struggling with injuries this year, Murray is a class act, his speed off the bike is insane
  19. stretch it out and get a foam roller from a sports shop and roll those hammies every day, should sort out out soon soon
  20. Try Trail and Tar in Tokai Road, just below the Forest, always been happy. Were voted best bike shop in the country last year
  21. Sad, but everyone knows that CSA wants PPA's 1) Money, 2) organisational ability, 3) credit for Argus. They just don't like being a sick little fish in a pond built by a private organisation in the Cape.
  22. Short rides are not much use, unless they are quality workouts with some hill repeats (or a hilly course) hammer the hills or do interval sessions, like a 4 or 5 x 20 mins at 90%.
  23. Booo that sucks, probably going to stick to midlands, maybe rockman next year when it is tried and tested
  24. part of my buying philosophy is now that I have to be able to service the part myself (only shocks still scare me a bit). Sometimes its better to pay a bit more for something that is easy to maintain than to pay less for something that needs "specialist tools" or expertise
  25. I stopped "servicing" my bikes about five years ago, now I attend to whatever needs sorting out at the time myself. Otherwise you get the vw dealer service approach, "you better replace it now, because it might just wear out tomorrow and then it is going to be much more expensive to fix". Lets face it, you walk into a shop with your bike covered in three days of sani, tell the dude to "service it" he is going to see every part as being trashed by mud and just strip the stuff off and replace, he doesn't have the time or the gumption to clean every nook and cranny, repack bearings and stuff, its easier to replace.
