  1. Hope he gets well soon. I always thought that was a pretty safe spot, wide road, good sight distances etc.... I guess the motorist didn't quite appreciate the speed that he was going, which was probably quite fast, coming down from the top of Suikerbossie.
  2. Good riposte. Bottom line, horses for courses
  3. Try the my training day group, I only hear good things http://mytrainingday.com/. Run by local pros Kent and Claire Horner
  4. A nice little article about Wayne http://theridgeonline.co.za/an-epic-tale/ I see the link to his company isn't working, perhaps he has pulled the plug on the coaching business.
  5. I don't think that it has enough space for stashing nutrition for IM, looks ok for 70.3. You shouldn't have to poop during IM and if you need to take a leak on the bike just let go.
  6. http://www.capetown.gov.za/en/Pages/Citycommittedtocyclingsafety.aspx Good to see the City of Cape Town being pro-active
  7. Well done Discovery, that SA-Active routine was worse than negotiating an Argus entry
  8. Seriously? "Only small segments of professional cycling races are cycled at such severe intensities that VO2 max is decisive. There are many other factors, none of them influenced by EPO." What, like multiple climbs over 10 km long?
  9. Not sure about the seat going higher, you may end up rocking on the saddle, you could drop the nose of the saddle a bit though
  10. Like all laws, they are pointless without adequate enforcement.
  11. I just love kicking butt. There is nothing more satisfying that outdoing someone with pure strength and skill.
  12. No good, the shop should know better than to service a fork which they are not licensed to service. Short answer is that they are liable for damages unless you said that they could have a crack at it. What I dont understand is why they would want to mess with something that they can easily outsource, did you put them under any time pressure?
  13. Whole lot of exaggerated fearmongering this shark nonsense. You are way safer swimming in the sea than cycling on the road. That being said I swim in Silvermine dam rather than Fishhoek, but its also a pollution thing, False Bay is a bit of a sewer
  14. Sliding your saddle quite far forward will help your position. Also start with the bars quite wide, for better stability and control, you can move them closer together as you get more comfortable Don't stress too much about it, I put mine on for the first time a few months ago, did a 1 hour test-ride and hit a triathlon with a 50 km bike leg. No problems at all, comfortable and FAST. If you are a bit nervous get on a quiet road and ride around a bit, practice drinking changing hand positions etc....
  15. I am sympathetic to the PPA / organisers of the races in the Peninsula. The traffic down here is something of a disaster and Boyes Drive and Ou Kaapse weg are groaning with the additional volume of cars. Lets just let this year go and get the roads back to normal and then its business as usual. If the organisers tried to use Boyes / Ou Kaapse there would be a public outcry and we may get racing permanently banned in the south (just like they closed Chappies & Constantia Nek to racing years ago.
  16. Boyes doesn't make very much difference, the distances are pretty much the same and there isnt very much climbing on Boyes. In the top bunches perhaps only 1 - 2 minutes. In a very Similar state of fitness I did 2:58:34 over Boyes in 2011 and 2:58:04 in 2008. (which was the last Main Road ride I think). Obviously there are other factors to consider, like wind and the "mood" of the group, but the pace over Boyes is always pretty flat out. I think the difference comes in the later stage of the ride, on Suikerbossie or perhaps Chappies, when the extra efford to go over Boyes catches up if you are not as fit as you should have been
  17. You have to ride another 15.7 km and undertake a bit more climbing, my guess is that you are going to be a bit short if your fitness remains the same. That extra distance will take you close to 30 mins to complete. If you don't get a start group of A to E, pretty much forget it. If you do get a good start and improve your fitness, you have to stick with the group until Chappies to make your life easier.
  18. I have run with the Trail & Tar group a few times and we have always made a point of moving out of the way for cyclists and being courteous to riders on the single track. A bunch of the running group that I was in are also mountain bikers and make sure that we don't get in the way of riders, we don't want a dual crown fork sticking out of our faces any more than the next person. I stand corrected by I have never seen anyone from the T&T group with an ipod, if someone tried it on, they would be told to go run on a treadmill at the gym. Simple solution, no need for regulation or bans, lets all just get along. Runners are going to continue to use the singletracks, they are far nicer to run on than the jeep track and stepped hiking trail, and often link areas and routes that would otherwise be miles apart. Runners should yield to bikes on single track. As a biker I expect runners to get out of the way, and this is just the way it should be, it is far easier to step off the track than it is for a bike to stop.
  19. Its about an open market place, sometimes I buy from CRC, often CWC is as cheep or close enough (especially considering delivery fees & duties) and sometimes the LBS gets my buck because they are top guys and I want to support them, and often I just want is quickly and easily.
  20. Silly, Silly little man, doesn't understand the global economy and is scared that he is going to lose his piece of the pie.
  21. I hear that duct tape and cable ties are all that you need for any situation
  22. Best bet would be to work through the club structures at one of the bigger clubs. They normally want you to race the league, paid for by yourself, for a season. If you are good enough you can get a slot on one of their teams, with some kit, nutrition and bike servicing sponsored. Ride for a few years and race in the bigger events and try a few of the things in post #5 above and see where it goes, give yourself five years, if you make it by then go for it, if you don't crack it you can always be a bike mechanic.
  23. My cousin is coming (from Canadia) to do the 70.3 in Jan, he has entered the IM in Whistler, I may have to drag myself off there for the return leg
  24. Icycling, your body has a balance sheet, you can take stuff to help you perform or feel great for a time, but it will come back to bite you. These guys on the EPO have shortened their lifespan by 10 years. So grab that HGH and feel amazing for a decade or two but you cant put off the man in a black cloak and pointy stick who rides a skinny horse
  25. IM New Zealand was cancelled this year due to weather, I feel for those that spent R35 k plus to get there to be told that it was off, bear that in mind. I dont think that you will find much happening in the northern hemisphere this time of year, perhaps look at IM Mexico or IM Australia in May or IM Brazil in March 2013
