  1. Yep, I think this was the main reason while the father was much more chilled about the whole thing this morning Will do what needs to be done, and do what I would have expected someone else to do if it was my own son. There are so many possible reasons and causes. But it wouldnt help to play the blame game, just HTFU and deal with it.
  2. Yep,the excess is R2500, which could have been spent on other stuff, but at least the kid is fine. I think the dad had a good chat with his son last night, hence the call this morning. Shows me that it wasnt my mistake only but a good wakeup call. We need to take responsibility and do the right thing if things like this happen.
  3. Dangle, he rides an old MTB with V-brakes. I have the spare wheel in my garage, a skewer as well, so will arrange to meet the kid tomorrow and fit the wheel for him. So I believe everything is ok. Have a few other spares as well that I will give to the kid to fix up his bike 120%. Thanks for asking, appreciated. feel like such a a-hole, but need to get over it
  4. Long story. Yesterday morning on my way to work I stopped at a 4way stop, observed, and drove off. Just to be jolted by a school boy who rode into me, or I into him. Dunno that. I remember I was thinking, geez this sun is bad (driving in eastern direction) at 7am. COuldnt see clearly, checked all the other cars and drove off. As a cyclist myself, I'm always extra carefull when driving looking out for anything with two wheels. Anyways, after the incident I stopped, helped the boy up and parked to side of road. He didnt sustain ANY injuries, what a relief, one crank arm was a little bent and his earphones where damaged. He said he was fine, got on bike and rode to school. I on the other hand, have some damage to my car (R12500-00). This is ok, the main thing is that the kid is fine. One Lady helped him up, but I dont know` if they xchanged details. There were no other witnesses who came to assist after the incident Im still in shock, this could have been my own son in a few years, or one of yours. I cant say wthout dobt that it was my fault or the kids. I went to report this at SAPS anyways, just in more details. So the dad called me last night, wanting me to replace the bent crank, buckeled front wheel and earphones. Once again told the whole incident, kid didnt ear helmet, had earphones on and front brake cable was broken. Just got a call again, the kid is still fine, and dad wanted to leave everyting there, but I said lets keep the faith and I will give him a new front wheel (there goes my single speed plans) What I actually want to say, that these things happen, we are all somewhat irresponsible sometimes, or dont concentrate when driving in our cars. We also know that kids can be irresponsible at times. I'm still in doubt if it was my fault or the kid's. I doubt if I can request them to help with the excess on my insurance. But its perhaps time to HTFU and get on with my life again. Sometimes these things happen to show us to get our lives in order. I urge you, let your kids wear helmets on their way to school, check their bikes for road worthiness, and be alert in your cars. This could have turned out much worse.

    Snow?

I have a feeling lots of calls like that are going to be made today.... excellent post!
  6. What TheV said +100 I was in the same boat as you when I started riding two years ago. Wanted to upgrade my then entry level mtb....my calculations told me to ride the kuk out of it, so I did just that, sold it earlier this year and bought another bike, also a 26" hardtail, just with better components etc. This one is also being ridden hard but well looked after. I have a good idea what I eventually want, so started saving for it already
  7. Riaan jy het PM, hoop dit help
  8. Reading all of these stories brings back a lot of memories from way way back.... Did the my first Jock in 1997 on a Nishiki Hardrock and my second and last in 1998 on a Trek 3000 mtb Can remember each time going up Boulders some roadies pushing their bikes. Most memorable quote by one was "ek donner sommer hierdie bleddie fiets van die berg af!" But its good to heat that the race still has that awesome vibe and well organised. Will do it again some time hopefully. Afterwards we always went back to Badplaas, chilled in the heated pools for a while and then off for a nice bite at the Spur (I was a student then so yeah, it was good)

  10. Like many others it started off as a health thing and now its like a drug, a good addiction I'd say. If I dont get T.I.T.S I'm grumpy. This past two months of not riding has been the worst time of my life easily. As Patches said, if I'm on the bike i forget about anything else, and just for that few hours it's my time only. indeed a luxury!
  11. That squeel is quite handy when you want to pass someone.....
  12. or have the fred locked due to some personal attacks and have members banned
  13. Hmmmm some nice Hope rotors there.....good time to start compiling my Christmas wishlist that I can leave lying around the house! Back to the topic, when I bought my MTB with Avid Juicy 3 brakes it had the exact same problem. I cleaned the rotors, cooked the pads (just heated them in a pan with the metal side down -flip, doesnt sound right, but I know i followed advice from lbs correctly), sanded them, bedded them in again, checked for rotor warp and pad allignment, still the noise and vibration persisted. Eventually took the bike back to the shop where I purchased it (the sports basement) and they said the pads somehow oxidized. And replaced whatever pads were on with organice disc brake pads and it seemed much better afterwards. It still squeals after a dusty ride, at least the vibration is gone.
  14. I personally think that there is no one set of best gloves. Obviously you get your Fox, First Ascent etc etc but I would like to say that needles and pins might be more related to your hand postion during rides andd correct setup. I personally use any brand of glove that fit my budget at the time, cause with me they all seem to last a year at the most
  15. Yep, Batseal worked for me as well. Do not have 29er but it should all work the same. Also wound insultation tape around twice, tim strip, valve and sealant. After almost a week it's still 100% sort of a mini hi-jack: with all the different sealants available on the market, they should be more or less the same. Being no tech junkie, how does batseal compare to the rest?
  16. Thanks man, yeah, have some other stuff going this year, so 2013 will be the comeback year! To the OP, just search for K2C, or Karoo to Coast here on the Hub, quite a few threads with some usefull stuff in there!
  17. If I look at some of the replies here, I still cant believe I bombed out after 56 km last year. You need to get in quite a few rides of close to 100km before the time, up here in GP we did a few Breedt's Nek outtings etc and a few other long-ish rides. But in hindsight, I tried to rush and ride too fast for my fitness and ability at the time. I think that most people underestimate the ride. Mushilele nailed it right on the head when talking about the route profile. So train hard, plan your hydration and snacks and dont treat it as a race the first time, unless off course you are a racing snake. Rather treat it as a ride and an amazing day out. The views and vibe are awesome. I will be going back next year and actually finish it, as it still haunts me.
  18. I may just be ignorant but have the following questions for the guys in the Cape: Can you order from online store and arrange to collect at the store? I once tried to do this with buycycle and phoned them asking very nicely since they have to be like 10km from my office/home, but nope
As jy in die week wil ry, join eerder Groenkloof. Laasjaar was 'n jaar kaartjie iets soos R600-00. Dis baie beter as jy alleeen in die week wil/moet ry. Die plan is dat ek weer Epic join hierdie naweek, maar ja, as jy daar is, kyk uit vir my rooi Spez Rockhopper en sĂȘ howzit.
  21. Bored during school holiday?
  22. hmmm another route here in Centurion? DOnt know how the route goes, but I assume its unsafe in alot of areas. should be an awesome ride. Why dont we try and get some numbers for this and check it out? Alternatively you can always join the Epic Sports ride on Saturday mornings departing at 07-ish from the shop in Jean Avenue. Mostsly go through Irene/Olifantsfontein etc. Some very nice trails as well. Most rides do parts of the USN Mtb cup route.
