  1. I can give feedback on shimano shoes since I bought them, around 5 years ago - still using them. Only changed cleats. Most the stuff I bought from Mr price broke in someway or other. I have not tried the shoes. I guess I am asking - is cheap nasty ? Similar to your question.
  2. Hi All, What are the suggested options ? (Bicycle frame ) I got a quote from postnet (postnet to postnet) - R500 zar any other alternatives ? (The obvious to ask a mate who is flying up, can be excluded.. )
  3. Never put a new chain on your bike the night before, without testing your full drive train! Drive to work, work the day, get ready to commute home by bike, get suited up, cycle a block or so from the office with gears skipping all over the place, spend 20 - 30 minutes adjusting gears, to figure out the cassete is worn, and then have to drive home in the traffic you planned to miss. :w00t: :w00t: :w00t:
  4. then again, if they did bring an "very long life" cassette to market, they would be out of business ... so if they did have one, why market it ? The above logic can be applied to many consumer products that you need to repurchase ... think light bulbs, batteries, etc etc.
  5. You probably need internal gear hubs: http://www.rohloff.de/en/products/speedhub/ Single speed reliability and life span, with the gears
  6. Will it make you faster ?
  7. Watch the TDF; see the bunny hops on the pavements at some circles ...
  8. Safe ? You need to be way more alert than on a weekend ride at 6am. Cars will skip stop streets, they will turn in front of you. Taxis may run red lights. Pedestrians have no idea of speed, and how fast you can close in on them. You need a bell, but that wont mean that they will realize you there. Buses and trucks are terrible. Always be aware if there is a bus/truck, and make sure you are as far away from them as possible. Busy routes are better when traffic is at a stand still; however I use mainly single track on the side of the main road and/or pavements. This makes it a little safer. Once you become "street" smart on your commute , it will be safer. For me, using a MTB makes it as safe as it can be, I generally avoid road where I can. Try it, and be prepared ... you either going to like it or hate it. For me, its been awesome. I have learnt a lot.
  9. Easiest way to resolve wife cycling problems.... Get your wife into cycling. Get you kid into cycling. Go away for cycling weekends. Pimp your wifes bike. Pimp your kids bike. Get family and friends to join you on weekend rides. (If you need distance, wake up early and meet them at the venue by cycling there), do a slow ride with them, then cycle home again, and give it horns. Unless this is a troll post with a boast ....
  10. Look up avianto ... Links up to the route ... On weekends be prepared to be swammped with cyclists enjoying the ride ...
  11. Bought My daughter an axis xtra small mtb... Her first race punctured. After that I knew I had to go tubeless for her. Did the "ghetto" tubeless for R100 bucks for her (2x20inch tubes) Used some of my stans. So I guess if you don't have stans, you need to add R280. So for probably 380 Bucks you can have the conversion. I used the tyres the bike came with, no UST or special tyres. Bike been puncture free since conversion. One small modification from me compared to GHetto. Rather than cut the tube with the tyre on along the rim, I did it with the tyre off - aligned the cut with the rim line. Then I put the tyre back on. All neat and no jaggies sticking out.
  12. Bummer of a ride ... started strong ... landed up at the finish at 32km ????? Had strong legs still, not sure what the hell happened, I didnt miss any markers as far as I know ... WTF ??? Took the 50km turn-off... The route I did do was fantastic .... man what a drop off .... and the ramps - got big air, was worried about a collapsed bike but landed on both wheels Maybe next time I get to do the 50km ...
  13. Not to be "funny", but my 9 year old does the 12km MTB races at a leasurley pace. Her friend also 9 does them as well and normaly finished in the top 3 in the 8 - 12 category. I guess what I am saying is be realistic about turning pro. It may be natural skill agmented by training, which you may or may not have. If you battle on the hills, under attacked or technical sections you may be in some trouble turning pro. Some of the riders have been cycling for 9 years before their 18th birthdays (just saying ...)
  14. Use compressed air from garage ...
  15. After 45 km off-road in a mtb race with 15 to 25km or more still to go, its not "marketing speak" or "graphs". I think the stage racers will probably have good advice on what to use and is effective ... I would like to see the same efficiency graph after the race just after you cross the finish line, not before you start off. I think I will try "Go Chainwax from Bearing-Man". Ideally it will be something that does not "soak" up the dirt, and keeps it lubbed till the end - or at least near the end of the race...
  16. Question, how to keep lubed? After 30km all good, after that with all dust etc, doesn't stay that way ... Or is it too much wheel sucking in the dirt?
  17. I have fallen many times. My feet never stay clipped in. I have no idea on that works ... I go one direction, the bike another. Road and mountain bike. The real difference is power. Flat landers will never have a full 360 (reality probably 340 ) degree on each pedal stroke, they can only push down for around 120 or so degrees, and then wait for the circle to return to the power position. Flatlanders will only have 1 leg producing the power on each stroke . Clippers will have two THink of doing squats with 1 leg, and then doing squats with two - which will lift more ?
  18. Stans - flipping awesome ....
  19. Look at china for frames .... Online stores for components .... But you still gonna pay 10 -15 for something decent ...
  20. Ride LOTs. Start small, gradually build up your base miles. Fix what you can yourself. DRink beers with friends after the race.
  21. What a poooos...
  22. Taxis will drive through red robots -------- be aware ; it was a dumb ass taxi on this mornings commute.
  23. Petrol indirectly affects cyclists .... (Parts, clothes, inflation, etc) Cycling to work is however nice, when not paying for fuel, although food becomes the fuel Noticed the price of fuel this week, when I tapered off for a race this weekend ...
