  1. Hi All, Is it happening tonight at 5pm ? 20 bucks still ?

  3. Maxxis crossmark. Latest about 2 years for me. I rode it till it was dead. Used my bike at least 4 times a week. A little bit of tar 10%, and then most of it offroad 90%. I wasnt worried about the wear, only replaced once a bubble appeared where it became thin to the canvas underneath. Caused an un-natural bounce when cycling

    Road Hogs

Let me just say: When there is a bike race like "ride for sight", "carnival city", etc, etc with no road closure then its ok for us to ride all over the road in huge groups 50- 200 cyclists every 5 min apart, not having a care for cars or traffic. No one then has a camera to say, look at how bad they are cycling. Now when you are on a training ride with 20 odd cyclists, at 6am on a very quite road with maybe 15 cars an hour it becomes a huge issue ? Honestly, sometimes the plank in someones eye is a splinter is anothers. MY advice to my fellow cyclists is to ride safe without endangering your life. My advice to motorists is to be a little patient on that quite road where there is hardly any traffic and you find yourself behind some cyclists on a country road. From both sides there should be a little tolerance and no advantages taken. I agree that riding more than two abreast on a training ride is wrong, however in a road race with no road closure we as cyclists find it acceptable. Its a confising moral position, but one which we accept and tolerate. Maybes its just the way things work. Who Knows ? All I know I love cycling and see you all at carnival cycle race tomorrow.
  5. My 2 cents: Has a rolling road closure ever been done before in JHB on that route ? In my mind a practice run should have been attempted first to identify any potential problems. If it proved to be too troublesome, then the route should have been changed. We all know how well respected our road rules are by followed by law abiding citizens.
  6. I started in the cl group. When I saw we were going to catch the biogen group, I suspected big trouble because of the size of the bunch that was about to form. In came a few minutes later in form of a high speed crash. Hope the riders that went down were ok. That incident caused the bunch to split.
  7. There is another cheaper product than pro-nutro. Follow the link below for a Nutritional & Chemical Evaluation on epap Chemical Evaluation Then for the Nutritional content: Nutritional and then of course the golden question: what is epap? what is epap Our company been sponsoring ePap for a childrens home. Some our staff have been buying it for themselves (I think I might give it a try.)
  8. That must be around 6am.Cyclists riding two abreast with a car in support following the riders. It seems like a good, safe setup to me.
  9. "Upgrading from Alu to Carbon" I have both. Cycling in the bunch, sucking a wheel - Alu or Carbon makes no real difference, since you are conserving energy. Big difference is up the hills. You will be faster on a lighter bike. Sprinting will also be faster on a lighter bike (power to weight ratios apply) The truth is, if your fitness is not up to scrath, carbon may only make you look better (marginally) I think a better question would be "what part of a bike will make me faster ?" The reality is a lighter bike will because of: 1) Power to weight ratio (Sprints are quicker) 2) Less energy required to propel you forward (same energy = higher average speed going to a lighter bike) I have heard the chaps talk about the stiffness of a frame affecting performance, but to be honest, I have no idea how such measurements can be made without scientific measurement devices. On my bikes alu and carbon, I can tell no difference in stiffness. One is just lighter than the other.
  10. I think the best thing for cyclists who have not experienced the cradle route, is to actually give it a try. Its actually ideal for cycling, and it has a wider road just to cater for cyclists. The whole route is perfect. If you come up to JHb for a holiday, give it a try.
  11. There were a Lot of puncture repairs today! I had to cycle an agressive line intowards the road. Some poor new cyclist had a puncture and was walking on the caves road. I offered to help with a roadside repair (with my puncture repair kit). He said no, had enough, someone was coming to fetch him. The funny thing about the cradle route, is that maybe there are 5 cars for the whole distance( 6am). Cyclist number must be a good 150 or more this morning (94.7 preparation ride). The other fact is, the craddle residents do not own the road. Drawing pins show me the level of intelligence of a least one poor sod who does not have clue. Drivers in the area only get pi$$ed off cause they cant ride in excess of 120km on a 80km/h piece of road. I liked the idea of that chick with the energades by the road side. Good idea at the circle.
  12. My spider sense is tingling. I will be climbing the walls soon.
  13. A events calendar on the hub would be fantastic. If it could include links to entry to the event, that would be the bomb!
  14. In the open bunches, racing follows this pattern: Either you get dropped off the back of your bunch ,or you stay in the bunch or you pull at the front of the bunch. If another bunch joins you, I say its a free for all. They either pull away from your bunch, or the bunch gets bigger and they pull you along.

    32 vs 34

Neither!!! shimano have a 28-11 slx mtb cassette - Its a great cassette! I had it installed recently CRC 28-11
  16. cycling is fun. Having full road closure is lekker. I have dodged many cars/obstacles in a few races. I enjoy the 94.7 and will continue to do so. The route is not important. The time is not important. What is important for the race snakes is you position in your start group. Try win that, and worry about time later.
  17. Speaking of the cradle route, I would say that 90% of vehicles break the speed limit by a huge amount. I think some well placed speed traps would do wonders. I wonder if those "pins" would cause a problem for a motor-bike?.
  18. O yes, with the price of tubes these days, i Rather patch them until they cant be patched anymore.
  19. What secrets are there to fixing a tube ? Take patch, apply glue. stick on and leave overnight to dry I have done probably 50+ repairs that way with no issues. Sometimes I cut the big patches down to size to fit the hole. On the road, I use those sticky patches if my spare tube gives in. Procedure is simple, find hole, peel off and stick. When at home, replace with proper patch, if really neccessary.
  20. Hi All, Is it just me or has the prices of bicycles gone wild ? If I had to compare the price of bicycles to motor bikes. Bicycles seem way over priced. I had a look on the yamaha web site , and you can get a 175cc DT (dirt bike) for 28k yamaha dt
  21. Hi All, I tried CW cycles out following a hub post. I was about to do my usual Chain Reaction Cycles order, when I thought maybe I will give them a chance to quote on a few goodies I was interested in. Chris came to the party, and gave me a competitive quote. The other benefit was that the order arrived much sooner that it would if I had used chain reaction cycles. (Its not the first time I bought from CW, and back then on my order they were fantastic as well.) I would say, give CW a chance to quote you first. You may find what you are looking for. CW Cycles
  22. If I am not mistaken, the local bike shops have official wholesale channels in SA. i.e. coolHeat for Shimano. There are probably other similar channels for different cycling products. All LBS have to buy through cool heat for shimano,so that they have the local support for Shimano. I may be mistaken on this, but would like to be shown the error of my thinking. So the wholesaler Recommends the retail price, and thats the price you will be quoted when you call different bike shops. The quoted price is almost identical from different shops, for that reason. On CRC you dont have this restriction, they sell on supply/demand. This is why I can source some parts at half the local price after vat + shipping. It is true that some items are cheaper here, thats why you should shop around so that you can get the best bang for your buck.
  23. This is my biggest cycling fear, which is being taken out by a driver not paying attention to the road. If the punishment for knocking over a cyclist with a car could be made extremely off putting for a motorist, then I think some kind of change could be made to drivers attitudes. This could increase road awareness and cycling safety. Perhaps this is something the cycling unions to which we pay our fees can be addressed at government level. The punishment for a driver who knocks over a cyclist could be something like, direct to jail, until circumstances have been determined by an investigating authority, then various levels of legal punishment. i.e. if under the influence of alcohol, 10 years jail time, etc, etc
  24. The epic is expensive. If your mate has that type of money, then he may as well get a Soft Tail. (price not important, since to enter the event, you need to be loaded or sponsored) I think the fee was 25k per team, so its 12.5k per rider Others may know the actual cost. Also budget for spares and a mechanic, unless you are going to work on your own bike. After +-100km per day on the mtb I dont think it will be fun.
  25. Shimano pedals 520/540 or xt great in the dry, excellent in the mud.
