  2. From the UNESCO World Heritage website http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/1335 This should go in the rocks and fossils thread - but oh well Danxia is a landform type similar to that of "Karst" topography which forms in Carbonate rich areas - this is due to intense chemical and physical weathering of the Cretaceous Sandstone and Conglomerates that form the hills and cliffs in the region in China. So in some instances you see steep sides cliffs with narrow valleys similar to Karst areas but as the rock type is not Carbonate they have to be called Pseudo-karst landscapes. Much of the colouration is either due to Chemical weathering, or from the actual rock material where Cretaceous fluvial red-bed sandstones are interbedded with white clay deposits.

  7. Before getting to the riders themselves one needs to look at the "behind the scenes" people first. THE BIGGEST MAN IN MTB: Mr. Mike Bradley - Current General Manager of CSA. and former Chairman of CSA and KZNMTB and and and This guy is a true Revolutionary. Without his foresight MTB would not be where it is today. He took a dwindling National and Provincial series and reinstated it with clever Planning and Funding. And continues to do so with large strides into the Development side of things. Then the others: 1. Mr Alec Lenferna - head of Real Events - He has brought no less than 8 INTERNATIONAL races to our shores, including 2 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP events ... BMX, Road and MTB have prospered under his event organisational skills and his connection to the UCI as well as his involvement with people such as Mike mentioned above. Then we get the guys on the local fronts: Nick Floros - Insane trail builder and XC and Land Access Commissioner for KZN - without his efforts many places we ride in KZN would be out of Bounds. The guys at SAPPI, MONDI, and NCT Forestry, and Tongaat Huletts for allowing us the priveledge of building trails and then riding on their land. We are FOREVER indebted to them. ---- Then to the old days Andrew Meaker and Arno Neethling - Both former Chairs of SAMBA (what CSA is now) ... Revolutionary in building the sport from the grass roots level in the early 90's and bringing the rounds of the World Cup to Stellenbosch in the late 90's Then the riders: For putting the sport on the map initially internationally: Aldon Baker - XC Greg Millar - XC and DH Erica Green - XC Then the new crop: Greg Minnaar - DH - 3x World Champ - 3x World Cup Overall Winner - Over 60 Wins at World Cup Level Burry Stander (RIP) - XC - World U23 Champ in 2009 - 5th at the 2012 Olympics Andrew Neethling - DH - World Cup Podium finisher Rorke Crouser - XC - World Cup rider Phillip Buys - XC - World Cup Rider Mariska Strauss - XC - U23 - Ladies World Cup Rider Then the trail builders: Nick Floros - KZN (Sani2C, Cascades World Champs XC Track) Hylton Turvey - KZN - (Karkloof) Meurant Botha - CT - (Lots of Trails) Not sure of the others but there will be loads. Without all of these guys - MTB would not be where it is today. And I for one thank you! Cheers Nige
  8. Until you get stuck behind people walking in the track! hahaha Id say in KZN - Karkloof 30km and Enduro route In CT - definitely Tokai!
  9. Yeah i noticed those prospect shaft entrances too ... those things are from prospecting in the early 1900's ... you DONT want to fall down those things. Some of them go down like 15 stories. I saw the gates against the adits and my immediate reaction was "EISH" dont want that to collapse as you ride past.
  10. hahahaha how cool is that that you have to bunny hop over a ton of old prospecting trenches as you start your run. How deep were those trenches Supermil? Those would have been excavated during gold prospecting in the region as those mountains form the northernmost portion of the Barberton Greenstone belt. (I did my Honours near there at Agnes Gold Mine) Just some useless info for a Tuesday
  11. Its Mtn Splendor this weekend Is anyone making the trip? Im looking forward to it - going up on Fri, 1. drink beer and wine and have a braai, 2. Wake up with a hangover, 3. do the trail run, 4. have beers in the river by the main gate, 5. have more beers while playing tennis, 6. drink beer and wine and have a braai 7. wake up with a hangover 8. Ride the 40km and do wheelies and skids
  12. Thats fine ... Im not phased - its been through SARS etc and they put the Tax stuff in etc. So the SARS MRN value etc was set at R3500 or so ... If i have to pay an extra R400 so be it. I have my frame - thats what counts
  13. The SA500 Form showed only Vat - which is sweet - But the forms are still at FOREX now, (I had to submit them) so we will see if FOREX are poopals and charge me more - but i doubt it
  14. This is the key element that most of the races today have lost sight of
  15. Yeah to be fair it was a while ago ... 2010 was the last one in the rain ... after blowing 4k on my bike to rebuild it after 3 days of riding i vowed never again! Main issue i have with Sani is actually the trails ... Fair enough there is some cool singletrack and Day 2 into the Umko is really cool ... But again from a Downhillers perspective ... I would like to ride trails that had a lot more rocks, roots, and cambers in them - the perfectly manicured bench cut singletrack is cool - but its becoming too prevalent in our races today IMO ... The Cape have lots of cool rocky trails which im sure are a JOL to ride ... but again (and Im talking about myself, my wife and my riding mates specifically here) ... we look for gnarly trails to ride that are not groomed to perfection ... and if you have these in a mass participation stage race ... you as an organiser are just looking for *** as this type of trail often has little to no flow in it due to its tech nature. Also the last time we did Sani it took us almost and hour to wash our bikes each day, then we stood in queues for food and the bog (in the rain - not the organisers fault) and just got miffed and said enough is enough ... Thats why for a rider like myself - I am thinking of rather getting someone like Detour Trails to custom make an "Enduro-style" tour for us in Lesotho where we get shuttled to the top of a massive pass and then have to ride back down 1000m or so for lunch - then get shuttled back up again and do the same thing down another pass in the afternoon ... But thats just me ... because i am not into marathon-type events where you ride for 100km a day and see how much you can climb. hahaha
  16. Havent done W2W ... but Done 5 B&B's and 2 Sanis .... Wouldnt go back to Sani - even with a free entry ... not my style of riding and just too congested IMO ... I hate standing in queues to have a poo in the morning! B&B has always been good - but again after this year I am getting the feeling that all the riding over these trails with J2C and all the other big races has forced the event organisers to "dumb down" the trails ... B&B cannot be beat for organisation and food/water tables and vibe ... But it appears to be going the same mass participation route that Sani did with numbers having doubled in the last 2 years .... I will have to really think if its worth spending all that cash (R3500 - 2 day event) to ride with the wife and get stuck in singletrack when we could spend that each and go on our own custom made bike tour.
