  1. Sounds absolutely brilliant. I played for a league winning amateur club decades ago. I was still crap though, like every current South African footballer. I stopped going to matches or even watching any local football years ago. Doesn’t even look like footie, more like slow ping pong. The man-of-the-match in a recent Soweto derby ran a measly 7.4km. Just pathetic. They hardly seem to try much and are more interested in showboating. Our last footballer ranked in the top 2 500 by value was Steven Pienaar in 2011. Thankfully, we're able to see any and every EPL match. At least going to the cricket is still fun.
  2. "Lovely jubbly" choice. Edit: Also, great looking bike. What do you think of the Bomber Z2? FWIW I fitted a 140mm version to my hardtail (previously had 120mm Rockshox) and it’s been excellent on a variety of trails. Unfussy to setup and easy to service with a Fox 34 kit, just the way I like it.
  3. Love it. Chelski spent more than all the clubs in German and Spanish and Italian top leagues combined spending, still can’t buy a goal. Brilliant job Saints, and Ward-Prowse.
  4. Seems like a proper mensch too, also judging by the friendly on-field bants between himself and Odegaard and Gabriel.
  5. Still love the beeyootiful old cars but in my late fifties they’re kept on smart chargers and are down to a weekly ride. Simply luuurve the bikes and find I prefer cycling everywhere, including on visits to family and friends across the city and in neighbouring towns. Then again, unlike others here I haven’t yet travelled for cycling events. You’re so right though. “Give a man a fish and feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime. Teach a man to cycle and he will realise fishing is stupid and boring.” ~ Archbishop Desmond Tutu
  6. My modest role during early 80’s national service was in rations accounting of Eastern Cape military units. A black Fairlane was one of the cars assigned to my unit for staff use. After the first few trips with the WO, he preferred that I do the trips. Frequent site visits and I favoured coastal units. Nah not those units, I mean Seal's and Bruce’s and Supers and Tubes and Lookout and Loch Ness and Noncom and Rincon and Fence and Nahoon and Gonubie and Beachview. I don’t think anyone asked about my schedule or absence. My shortboard easily fitted in and was covered over the huge back bench seat. A troep, a surfing obsession, a Ford Fairlane, and a loose schedule = LOADS of surfing. I can hardly believe that I got away with all that, but we all got away with stuff that in hindsight seems nuts.
  7. “Bearing in mind the breadth of Dr Freeman’s dishonesty and the number of people he had pulled into it, the Tribunal found his conduct incapable of innocent explanation." https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/cycling/richard-freeman-team-sky-news-b2262926.html
  8. SAINTS 2 MAN CITEH 0 thus far. One loves to see it.
  9. Despite checking perhaps a dozen LBSs and online sites I somehow didn’t think to check Isiko and simply didn’t know about Summit, a bit like Cloudy... I’d have gone for that Summit offer instead of waiting as long as I did from an Asian retailer on eBay at half the price including S&H. Will mostdef remember to check those sites in future, thank you.
  10. Started with an insanely good deal from my LBS on a 140mm Marzocchi Bomber Z2 that came off a new bike. I paid four times less than the usual sticker price and quickly also nabbed another Z2 and a Rockshox Pike that also came off new bikes. Prices were so good that nabbed seems the only appropriate word. One for my son and the other to sell on. Could not find an in-stock external cup 44/40 lower headset, to fit a tapered steerer to a 44mm straight head tube, in SA. eBay to the rescue but rather using my original dust cap and top cap and bolt. Hub to go from non-boost to 15x110. Cut spokes hopefully arriving next week and can hardly wait to rip this upgrade on the trails.
  11. Edit: with apologies to our English thread mates. You have an excellent team that I somewhat envy.
  12. "The ref was just giving everything for them. He gave 10 minutes (stoppage time) for no reason. He was giving free-kicks outside the box for them, like two, three times. He just wanted them to score, that’s basically it.” - Argentina keeper Emilio Martinez Managers and players have previously received lengthy bans for implying that match officials are biased. Martinez outright claims that the ref cheated. Disgraceful, he MUST be banned.
  13. I enjoy solo exploring forest and coastal and mountain pathways on bike and those long-ago (very, in my case) sport orienteering and military navigation skills have proven invaluable. Also reassuring that my now-adult kids loved learning those skills as two of them frequently spend days out.
  14. There are a few challenging descents into and out of the Baakens Valley (XC-style) and the potential combinations of trails/pathways right through the length of the Valley is quite staggering. Crossways is also highly recommended.
  15. Riser bars and/or a steerer tube extender may be a solution to consider. Rapidé’s versions conveniently also offer 9° backsweep. https://www.rapide.co.za/product-category/31_8_bar_clamp/
  16. https://bikehub.co.za/classifieds/item/hardtail-mountain-bikes/585818/cannondale-trail2-l-29er Edit: Rockshox Recon air fork, upgraded Shimano XT rear derailleur, well maintained, the right size.
  17. …and then there’s this Saffa known as Safa Brian (aka Brian Wagner) who creates his own peri-urban risks (edit: and for others). Insanity imo. https://www.bicycling.com/culture/a36320897/safa-brian-cheats-death/
  18. Best wishes for you and your husband’s recovery, and for bringing that primitively minded @r$eH0L3 to account. I’ve encountered a few, never works out for them.
  19. After all their league struggles in the last 19 years, Arsenal are 5/5 in wins against London opponents this season. #trust the process Potter’s excellent though, trust the process Chelsea. Conte’s been good to arrest the slide, don’t think his conservative tactics suit Tottenham any longer.
  20. Always look out for and thoroughly enjoy your excellent movies, whether shot in the middle east or anywhere really. Mostdef going to include your St Francis route on a ride. Thanks again.
  21. I could never understand why Lenny Giles would try so hard to be intimidating about a break that’s slow and swak compared to Supers or Kalk Bay or Cave Rock or even the lefty wedges at King’s Beach, his aggression attempts were entertaining. We had a few fun days at Vic Bay though with Andrew Carter, David Stolk, Tim Stocks and a young Sean Holmes. FWIW Tim Stocks was late for his heat and remains the only person to contest a SA Champs semi-final in just his onderbroek and contest vest, as documented by Zig Zag's account and photo. 🤣
  22. Vested interest, yet I can’t imagine that one can do better than this drivetrain and frame and fork at the price. It’s been well looked after, a great choice for a first bike, loads of fun, and also properly accomplished on XC and up and down valley trails. https://bikehub.co.za/classifieds/item/hardtail-mountain-bikes/585818/cannondale-trail2-l-29er
