  1. I would guess that some of the minerals in the drink (it has both sugar and salt in it) got on the frame and then dried out and formed crystals in the rough surface of the matt. That is what shows up as white. I would wet it thouroughly with clean water, perhaps even keep it wet for a hour or so with a wet rag or cotton, then brush gently with a toothbrush and blow on it with compressed air and rinse at the same time. The idea is to dissolve the crystals and then rinse it away and dry. If dry and the spots remain, then I would guess that it might have had some kind of chemical interaction with the paint?
  2. Some would say that you should be more worried about the pink spots than the white spots! 😜
  3. Steel runs on beerπŸ˜‰
  4. Agreed, Velobrien is the place to go. I do all kinds of leather stuff myself, but I take my saddles to them. Always awesome work.
  5. πŸ‘You interested in becoming our minister of police? I'll vote for you!
  6. I used to to 2 things: On my direct route I always obeyed traffic signs and stopped when and where I was supposed to, then raced like mad for the next stop. It made a short commute into a high intensity interval training session and it worked like a bomb. I also added a bit of the scenic route, especially after work, to add distance. Sadly, my only safe route to work (from a traffic point of view) has now deteriourated into running a gauntlet of homeless encampments, pee, poo and muggers and I no longer feel safe doing it alone.
  7. I found it delightful how much more fellow riders were willing to engage when you are riding a tandem with a youngster as stoker. Many many people pulled up alongside for a friendly chat and some encouraging words. The young ones also enjoy the encouragement and the attention. But one word of warning, do NOT allow your young stoker to wear a superhero outfit that includes a cloak .......... behind your back, sooner or later they will make a parachute out of it when you are killing yourself into a headwind and by the time you find out what the problem is you'll be near death.🀣
  8. I have VERY bad flashbacks about being a passenger in an Alouette with a pilot trying to mow the African savanna into a lawn. Come to think of it, maybe that's why the acasia trees were all so very flat topped? (But NOBODY saw us on their radar.)😜 Those Mils were not very friendly either.
  9. Yup, one of the greatest things I did with each of my sons was to ride their first Cape Town Cycle tour (and a good few other races too) with them on a tandem. I still regret selling it because now I can see that it could be great fun to do it again after they have done about 10 each. Also, the day will come (hopefully not too soon) when they can pull me around and I'll relax as the stoker taking pictures (mostly selfies) like they did way back then!
  10. I was quite proud of the fact that I could still get into a skinny fit shirt belonging to a teenager - discomfort or no discomfort.😁
  11. Love the way people on this thread are so willing to give very freely of their experience and advice.πŸ‘
  12. Ha, ha, Yup, did that one with a shirt that belonged to one of my youngsters once. Had to suck my gut in and push my chest out all day long. Was half out of breath most of the time and completely exhausted by the ordeal.
  13. Very stunning artwork. Especially the secretary bird. Love it!πŸ‘The bike is great too, of course!
  14. Do NOT go through the part between Parden Eiland, Church Street (Woodstock) and the Civic Centre when on your own. Ride that strictly with a large enough group to deter attacks. Even small groups of 3 or so are targeted and it has become increasingly violent. And NO, it has not improved over the past few years. If there are fewer attacks, then it is because cyclists have learnt to avoid it, NOT because there are fewer criminals in that area. My guess would be that there are now (post Covid) more lawless opportunistic predators than ever before and the fences are much more broken down than ever in the past. As for police or security presence? I don't know because you won't catch me dead on a bicycle on that stretch unless in a big and mean group (and I don't have that).
  15. Can't believe I watched it ..... and laughed ........ especially at the "it is a really uncomfortable speedo and I wanted to get it finished quickly" 😁
  16. ......but.....but......cows are mamils too..........or are the mamals? It's hard living with lysdexia! πŸ€ͺ
  17. ......as it turned out, nobody cared anymore by Friday
  18. I think you may be required to speak the Kings' Rooitaal this time, Dale
  19. Just because I can: The name Kakamas was originally given to a drift that was known as Takemas or T'Kakamas since 1779. The name means "place of the raging cow" – probably referring to an incident when a raging cow stormed the Korana while they were herding their cattle through this ford.
  20. Must've been a tough day with the first real south easter of the year
  21. Fantastic ! The single most difficult thing anyone can do on a bike. πŸ‘
  22. It is a fabulous ride over a stunningly beautiful route with like-minded fellow riders and very inspiring crowds cheering you on. There is a reason it is one of the premier funrides anywhere and why thousands come from all over the world to ride it. Enjoy!
  23. Lekker lag ek nou .......... where I grew up, those English letters would have looked like they were from the special school for dyslexics (aka farm boys).🀣
  24. What, no Hairies allowed at any temperature?
  25. A full fill-up of the Landy will pay for three of us to ride the CTCT and still leave us with change for a decent burger and a beer each. And that fuel would normally last a little less than a month - so - it can be saved by me commuting by bike for just one month. And since my two other Ds are not likely to ride, just not using the Landy for about a week and a half, will pay for my own entry
