  1. ah man, sorry. This road running thing is not so straightforward as it seems, ain't it?! There will always be next year, and you've definitely learnt a bit this year.
  2. wow. so MrP do a shoe with carbon in it for less than R1k! https://www.mrpsport.com/en_za/elite-zeus-2-running-shoes-101352840 (they have a fancier one for a lot more though that will get some comrades golds)
  3. I have had this gastro bug for four days, starting to get concerned. Should be going in very light! goal: finish in good health. comrades is the real prize so this is just a fun part of the training. Probably doesn't help that my home in fish hoek is before the half way mark!

    Exactly. They should.
  5. basically a year on. Pog and MvdP have won more races, but both remain on the same 3 monuments in the race for all 5. WvA hasn't raced one since. I think it's only possible for Pog MvdP or WvA Pog: has got the results at MSR to show he could win it, and I guess it's far away enough from the GTs that he will easily keep entering it enough times to takes it eventually. Paris roubaix seems very difficult but if he has all 4 and wants to complete the titles then we could see something special. MvdP: he could win LBL in a fortnight, (or not). He did somehow sneak a top10 at his only Lombardia in 2020, but just like Pog/PRoubaix would probably need to change his season to win that. WvA:probably remains the best chance at winning all 5. Just needs to want to do it (be allowed). I don't see anyone else pulling this off going forward, maybe Remco.

I remember watching it like it was yesterday. There were a lot of coverage gaps as the leaders dillay dallied, so he seemingly "came out of nowhere" with 5 guys struggling to hold on to his wheel. Would love to see the full chase on video as am sure the production house haven't just let it slip into obscurity.
  7. Why wouldn't they work, no major physics changes for wireless conditions! You might have issues with compatibility with different products if protocols are set for a region.
  8. but then you as the seller can prove to BH it was delivered to the address from the courier platform communications? Anything sent with a courier could be open to this abuse/fraud. Is this a theoretical loophole you're scared of or real world experience?
  9. https://bikehub.co.za/classifieds/bike-hub-pay You're going to have to explain that bit in bold to me.
  10. Well spotted. I guess they would have changed both tyres if expecting rougher terrain for stages 3 and 7, so it's just an omission in the article Front Tyre Specialized Fast Trak, Control Casing, T7 Compound, 29×2.35 (GRID casing for two stages, Stages 3 & 7) Rear Tyre Specialized Renegade, Control Casing, T5 Compound, 29×2.35
  11. I'm the biggest cheapskate out there, and the whole "don't risk it with your head" mantra pisses me off because helmet safety does not correlate with price. BUT even i think 5yrs is too long with the same helmet. Probably time for me to get a new one myself actually. surprisingly 9 pages of helmets for sale, Personally I'd only buy an "almost new" helmet that didn't fit the owner or wrong colour. - not worth skimping to get a deal here in my books. https://bikehub.co.za/classifieds/c/helmets
  12. I was going to do EA stanford on my gravelbike in feb last year to prove your exact point, There was a sandy section for 4km otherwise the rest was hardpack gravel. Would have been a winner. I seriously considered putting 40mm tyres onto my hardtail for ARWC. However, after doing the course I am glad I took my hardtail with 2.25 tyres, this is a teamsport afterall so the gain is only really there if you do it together. Zuurberg pass with no suspension, that baviaanskloof 4x4 track, the final muddy stuff in the forestry roads??? norrafok, it was definitely the gnarliest terrain he ever put on.
  13. my advice: use common sense.
  14. that is very cool!!!
  15. So all you want is a small town with great mtb trail network, a woollies and a midsize unicorn farm?! I would not have said that Swellendam has a great trail network, but happy to be proven wrong.
  16. touche!! I did about 4000km on this db topanga I got for CAD50 in 2004, made it all the way to whiteshorse,YK (with some ferries helping me). Only ever had issues with rear wheel punctures, but was mainly on tar. If i went proper touring again I would be hard pressed to decide between newer tech or go looking for another barnfind DB Topanga on gumtree
  17. Maybe a dumb question, but this is the SWorks super bike launched about 10 days before the epic, right? Did Matt get an advance model for training, or just jump on it after global launch and dial it in. if the second, then was the global launch get tied to cape epic date? Another dumb question, bike is not going to auction or whatever, this is his racebike now for the season (granted he's on a gravel program too)?
  18. cool, that's more context! enjoy the roadtrip. You have to WANT to live in a smalltown and then be ready for the local smalltime bull#$it that comes with everyone knowing everything. I know people who moved heaven and earth to go into a smalltown(brilliant option mentioned here). it didn't work out and they're back in CT. karoo probably not an option, but these two journalists have written loads of articles and books on small town living. go to the charity shop and get 20 copies of Country life magazine for R3 each, they don't date much. https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2023-11-22-thinking-of-moving-to-small-town-sa-look-before-you-leap/
  19. you sound like a textbook recent inkoper!
  20. been doing Adventure racing for the past decade or so, with the odd other event thrown in. Was excited to run 'naked' with no gear and just use aid stations for nutrition (coke and powerade). but I figure that's probably not the best option, and looking at using gels with maybe top up from seconds. What do you guys carry nutrition wise for comrades? and how? will probably trial this at 2Oceans next weekend.

  22. That would be cool, even if just a crude way to confirm what we think we know! My bike closet is (currently) MTB (2014 carbon hardtail) + Farr gravelbike + 18yr old alu/carb roadie the mtb is used for long rides and AR racing the gravelbike has two wheelsets now and does the most - including to shops and back the roadie now sits on the dumb trainer, but got taken off for the argus. There is serious overlap between the gravelbike and mtb, and gravelbike and roadie if you switch gravel wheelsets. I should probably swap out the mtb for a duallsus but it doesn't seem to be a priority right now.
  23. Going to sound boring but not even Greg Minnaar has "best mtb trails" top of his requirement list when deciding where to live. There's at least five personal factors you need to consider when moving to a new town with the intention of buying property. Narrow those down first and then look at the mtb suitability of the places with boxes ticked. (And definitely do a road trip next).
  24. I can see why this is an issue, here is the 2023 segment done. the main downhill gets you over the dip to gain an extra 20m each lap. So you use gravity to brake each lap, and then start the next lap with a bit of a downhill. If you can get away with it, by all means!
  25. the strava calculator says NO, about 15% of the vertical gain is on the downhill! They might have adjusted things since it was last recognised so I would DEFINITELY check in with them. If your descent includes a bit of climbing this still counts toward your total. Keep in mind that this is a climbing challenge, and routes with ‘kinetic gain’ should be checked via the everesting calculator first. The calculator has a built-in ‘check’ on descent elevation gain. You’ll know yourself from riding it in real life whether your chosen segment has a gain on the descent. We want to avoid ‘free metres’ where possible. A ‘rule of thumb’ should be applied when looking at a route with elevation gain on a descent or kinetic gain. If it feels like you are gaming the system, then you probably are! Ask us first if in doubt (it’s never nice explaining this afterwards).
