    Well said, this is a subjective comparison of apples with pears. Can you "tour" the Epic - sure, some people ride with partners well below their fitness level. Weird way to spend a lot of $$$ and a week of leave though IMHO. The Epic has loads of hype, and that does attract a certain type of person. The FC is totally different, and attracts different people. Some overlap. The people who go back and back to Munga each year confuse me, but there are plenty so there must be some sort of attraction to it. Same thing with ocean rowing. life would be boring if we all thought the same.

    of course. there will be a lot of public roads. but the nice thing is many will be graded* for the event. The recce rides were uploaded, some influencers along for the ride (some epic german rider involved). https://www.strava.com/activities/12417499120 *the trick is to do a gonzo ride 2 days ahead of the event.

    Exactly. You can probably find a zillion routes in the EC Karoo that are gravel friendly. go between the old sheep farming areas and ciskei/transkei and you get a mix between hunting lodges and spaza shops. I had a spare day near the queenstown area and just winged a 70km route, the potential seemed endless - if i lived in the EC i would be doing this twice a year.

    speaking of bookies, here are the current odds. I count a few actual grand tour winners here, many way way down the order. Maybe this is the time to find out if Bernal has been trolling us (his juicy contract is up next year)

    At the 40km mark you have the option of your car 1,5km away or an extra 12km loop. It's really really tempting to can it right there! FB50 also seemed like a good option, but much earlier start with all the logistics! Can imagine running a closed clarence drive is an experience like no other. It's a special place for me as riding to rooi els and back as a matie was the best big training ride, and I did quite a few Totalsports challenge events as a solo.

    33 Days to the BIG DOWN run. Did my "long run" yesterday, past of Fish Hoek AC and they traditionally put on a 52km route called 4Hills4Lindsay. We have about 35 entrants, but quite a few came from other clubs and it was about 100 people who trundled off into the darkness. The weather was peach perfect and what a great route with 12 aid stations along the way. It was going to be a big reality check, as I haven't done enough mileage this year and I'm unsure how to factor cycling time in. I tried really holding back to simulate Comrades race pace, but this is always difficult. had had enough by the 40km mark, so walked all the uphills from there, and some of the gentle inclines too! the knees are sore, going to need to be very calculated over the next month to maximise gains on the final push to the startline

    We must have just missed each other! Labyrinth and Poplar on a 20" V brake! he loved it so much we did it again on Wed.

    I didn't believe the 24 month project plan when it was announced, the same storm klapped the botrivier N2 bridge and that was a lightning quick repair. but it seems, this is somehow more complicated.     According to a community WA group, sanparks have estimated 2700ha burned already. Incredibly the 2 day old fire seemed very under control at Tokai sat pm/sunday am. and then all of a sudden it flared up again. I don't see arson here, which does happen at times but then normally near the roadside and when the SE is pomping so it's easy. Quite often it's been "mountain dwellers" and also "religious groups" who camp out and chant for days. very sad

    I see that. I can follow up, but since it was Sentech's call I doubt they would change so easily. They were apparently using choppers to access the site due to the road condition.

    Is very much out of bounds, with no chance of changing. I know someone who knows someone to do with the annual local challenge and that is done for good. (As of Oct 24). Few reasons, but it's private land (and Sentech) and people abused this. Don't go.

    The issue is clearly as a professional you need to have these kids in the off season. Then the problem arises that you then need to make the kid in the spring classics season.
