  1. kicking off. Byron Munton won a stage in a 2.1 race in Portugal yesterday https://www.procyclingstats.com/race/volta-a-portugal/2025/stage-4/result/result https://www.instagram.com/p/DNL3XBNt2k4/
  2. since the demise of MTNQ/DDT the amount of SA road cyclists on the world scene has diminished. Zero ZA riders at TdF this year for the first time in a long time for instance. There are a few out there still in world tour teams, (Maincheese, Gibbo, hatherly). Quite a few bubbling under in the various feeder teams to the big stage. So as the scene gets a bit more obscure, a thread to highlight some achievements and performances. (feel free to merge if another exists)
  3. That would be cool to see, looks like there is a reboot in France itself - despite being a sailor I missed this fact last year https://www.cycleslejeune.fr/en/partner I remember it as a solid brand, and as thick tyres were kicking off in the 90s if you couldn't afford a Diamond Back your next option was a Lejeune Bundu Basher. These seem to have disappeared completely, they must have been terrible!
  4. I will stay Grounded
  5. This new habit of sitting in the middle of an intersection because you crossed it before there was space is the one that pisses me off the most. Is there a name for the practice yet, is it just a cape town thing?
  6. look at the specs of both bike models, or just pics. unless there is something exotic and proprietry in the Look it should work.
  7. wow how has it taken a decade for this masterpiece to cross my radar?! It's not to scale, but serves the message perfectly. I'd actually like a bumper sticker on my car that says something like: "I also ride bikes but today I am in my car. If you see me shaking my head, you're riding like a chop. Be lekker, share the road"
  8. Have a family house there. Not that many options in town itself, you can ride to strandkombuis and back from Blakes wines but that is probably 4km in total. I have ridden to Hopefield and koringberg from Darling, roads can be moere sinkplaat and migies in summer. take a mtb rather? then Living colour and !Khwa ttu are favourite destinations of ours. After spending some time in St Francis Bay, I REALLY would like to get some mtb (and gravel) options going similar to what the club has done there - plenty of people riding and there is now even a bike shop. Might try and see what can be done.
  9. You haven't worded it very well, but a portion* of cyclist behave atrociously on the roads (chops). They make the rest of us (decent) look bad. Look at the title of the thread, this is not unique to south africa either. The "you do you" approach does not work here. The decent cyclists are best placed to call out the behaviour of the chops, for our shared common benefit of safer roads and better vibes with drivers. BUT we can't see to agree on that here (I hope I'm not surrounded by chops) * the chops:decent ratio is probably 5:95, but motorists will have you know it's the other way round! https://www.strava.com/segments/2732916?filter=overall strava downhill KOM (actually not a thing) for the entire chappies is 69km/h average. My fastest average is during Argus and is 41.1km/h (I'm a wuss). that puts me 6500 something out of 56000 ish efforts. So simple numbers is that 15% of people are averaging faster than the 40km/h speed limit, peak speeds will be well above it.
  10. holey moly. that is stupid expensive
  11. maybe change topic title, assumed it was rugby related. I would send him to the local algemene handelaar in the lower income part of town. you will find some kit there that could work for a while.
  12. from a trailrunning group: (my comment)This is what happens when you have no one maintaining roads... Dear Park Users, After the fire in April and the recent heavy rains, soil erosion has severely impacted Upper Tokai and other areas within the Central section of Table Mountain National Park. As a result, some jeep and horse trails are damaged, which primarily affects horse riders and cycling groups. The area remains in need of attention, and a proper assessment will be conducted by the Technical Department to determine the best way forward. The affected areas include Upper Tokai, Level One and Two, the Arboretum, and the Tokai picnic bridge. We are currently in the rainy season, and we anticipate that additional damage may occur. In response, our teams will intensify their efforts to prevent further erosion while maintaining the integrity of existing structures.
  13. I see these comments, I gets excited. I clicks the link to the exact model being discussed here. I sees the R120k sticker price. I realises I still in the wrong whatsapp group
  14. Can't say much for Geordo, but Alan Winde is well aware of the issue. They need to do everything possible, but Transnet is a huge issue in this case.
  15. You don't need a GPX to ride that, it's like one road. What you do need to do is find Angie's G Spot.
  16. Where are all the cape weather experts who say this event needs to be in summer now?
  17. Just for some reference in the future, here is where the bookies see next year going. For 2025, Lipowits and was on the radar, but Onley came out of nowhere.
  18. Thought I'd just respond to the original post again as an important point seems to have been lost here as the debate polarises on in circles. TheHub was originally a forum to talk cycling, and classifieds on the side followed. It became a good place to buy and sell, because there was a level of trust you could from forum members directly, and other members would chirp in if a fast one was clearly being pulled. Things change, as online advertising moved over time the classifieds became the focus of the revenue generator. Fine with that. As we were dealing person to person, there were some good deals for both parties. Resellers jumped in here and spent an inordinate amount of time looking to snap up bargains. This is nothing new, I'm very ok with the free market principles. You're going to lose the community's support if you flip a bike for a profit on the same platform the next day - that's what happened to a few if i remember correctly. in the wider scheme of things, Webuycars are trialling a complex machine learning platform where you will be getting an offer on your car - with no humans involved. If they set it up right, they will be able to make the second hand car market more efficient, and therefore better deals for both buyers and sellers. It will take a long time to get there for bike industry. Instead we currently have James (I assume he is a real person) acting like a bot, shotgun spraying ridiculous offers on a cut-and-paste basis. Maybe if this human was a bit more human in his dealings, he would piss people off less. Maybe if he actually engaged with the seller, and asked informed questions on the item for sale he might actually get more deals. But in a free market, you don't have to tell people how to run their companies. I assume @WeBuyBicycles don't want to post on the platform as they have been here for 5 years on this account without a single comment, but they have right of reply
  19. They do provide a service, put cash into stock, take a risk on it, offer variety. pay tax But many of us know bikes and like to deal directly and cut out the middle man. They are the middle man, and a pain. here's a BM appreciation thread that went south.
  20. Agreed. I blocked him. This bike was advertised at R30k, sold for R28k. For me the best suggestion would be to fight fire with fire. How about every friday morning we all take 5 minutes out of our time to send 10 low ball offers? get 20 people on the program that's 200 message on the system to go through. the spammer becomes the spammee
  21. looks like they have a Camino option for you. https://www.edusport.co.za/packages/cycling-the-portuguese-camino-de-santiago-9-day-self-guided-travel-package/ R22k pp sharing, gets you 7 riding days of bike hire, accomodation(8), breakfast and even luggage transfer. I know you said you were being lazy, but did you do a basic google? Several reputable companies offer cycling holidays in Portugal, catering to various preferences and fitness levels. BSpoke Tours focuses on scenic coastal routes and Douro Valley e-biking, while Saddle Skedaddle provides both guided and self-guided tours exploring the coast and countryside. Portugal Best Cycling, specializing in the Alentejo region, emphasizes local authenticity and cultural experiences. Exodus Travels offers guided and self-guided tours along the Atlantic coast and through the Algarve. Portugal A2Z Walking & Biking offers customizable walking and biking tours, including self-guided options. Other options include Headwater Holidays, Eurobike, and Cycling for Softies, which focus on luxury and sustainability, respectively.
  22. 3HC mountains, this is the biggest stage in terms of uphill numbers. might always find a break comprised of teams with zero GC affect goes far up the road and the UAE/JV guys call a truce until the final finish.
  23. for me at comrades I could taste some of the water was either siff, or very chemical. i just spat it out and ditched the sachet. possibly 3/4 out of 30 sachets. I haven't followed to see if it was a wider problem really. Not sure entirely how it works, but what happens to unused water sachets at a race? Do they go back to depot for the next race? fine if it's next week, but what if it's a few months (or a calendar year). There is of course a huge push to be more green friendly, can see sachet reuse being an issue that could go south
  24. From trail running on the silvermine east section, there's a section of jeeptrack that also become a river. There is a section where the road just disappears into a hole, so hazard tape for now! Can see that the basic prep work has started on sorting this out, but looks like only remedial stuff till summer when they can properly fix it. overall, the wapad, silvermine loop and tokai forest all require some decent roadworks to actually get them fixed and winter proofed. I doubt there is funds or plans for this so we will just see bandaids until it gets destroyed.
  25. sure, the increase in weight is quite significant - can go from 300g to almost a kg on a junior fullface. What do you think on the removable chin guard option?
