  1. Unless you asked CRC to add something to parcel and not declare it, I don't see a problem? CRC are straight arrows anyway. And if your clearing agent places it under the correct tariff heading. They can alert as many SARS and customs officials they want. Customs have bigger fish to fry than to stop a small parcel of cycling goods arriving in the country through the correct channels. So they stop a parcel, it gets delayed a day or two. We still get the goods.
  2. Sorry, I should've included parts manufacturers as well. Unless you're going to start making bike chains and derailleurs in your back yard, there's no reason why duties on imported goods should go up.
  3. Duties is to protect the local market of manufacturers and for extra government revenue. There is no local bike manufacturer to protect from the flood of imports. The trade industry won't change the duties and vat on bicycles and parts if a couple of bike shop owners asked nicely.
  4. And the other industries are being checked. Please go and read a newspaper. As for the profit: 100%+ markup is absurd. Someone in IT said their margin is 5-10%, another hubber said motorcycle sales work on about 10-15%. Cycle shops are not the bottom feeders as you make them out to be. The issue is not running a business - it's the collusion. These cycle shops hated the competition and wanted to play unfair. Big question: If the issue (acc to Supercycling last night) was about getting past fixed Recommended retail price of wholesalers, why is it that eg. Shimano parts prices differ at bike shops?
  5. R200,000! I saw a credit card deposit slip of one of these shops on a Sat, over R85000 on cards for that day alone...
  6. I know for a fact that some bike shops have a 100%+ mark-up on tyres. The point is: Know your product, price etc when shopping.
  7. The route changes were great. The 45km had a bit more single track. By the time we got to the damp areas, the 75km riders had turned it into a mud pool with no way around it. But it was fun. I was very happy when they got the distance wrong with about 2km!
  8. There's plenty to eat (proper kermis food) and drink. They have a stage where singers perform, beer garden and plenty of citrus fruit for sale at give-away prices. Some home industry stalls. They have kiddies rugby- and netball day and watching the little ones play and the parent perform on the side line, is always fun.
  9. The most important ones are passing a slower rider and pothole/danger/glass. Showing your water bottle before you drink is just silly. Rather concentrate on keeping a straight line and steady pace while you drink.
  10. I used to say SAA Cargo, but their rates shot up rapidly. Time Freight's been reliable and fair in price. Cheapest is Fastway couriers (R25 jhb-pta for docs!) but I don't know how they'll handle bigger freight.
  11. They say it's the drugs or stuff they take before they break in, that makes them poefie in your garden.
  13. Would the cyclist's choice of words and actions have been different if there were 3 strong men in the car? FOR SURE!. But some men are cowards and try their worst language and behaviour on a women because they know she won't retaliate.
  14. You give too much credit to Malema' date=' other than being head prefect of ANCYL Kindergarten, he is not an elected official, holds no goverment position and is just mouthing off. [/quote'] Perhaps so, but he is causing a rift between people, who in other times would've lived in harmony with each other. We got to a point where we tolerate each other, enough to get by each day. The last thing this country needs, is a big mouth who makes inconceivable promises to his followers. Strange how much air time he gets from the SABC the last couple of days...
  15. Whatever FFS, he's a celeb because of adoring cycling fans. Sorry, if he hasn't got time for guys who have supported JAG his hosts for a quick photo, sorry IMHO no time for him... He's not public property. There's just not enough hours in the day, if he had to pose for a pic each time someone asks. The fact that he waved and greeted people along the route, makes him the man.
  16. So much anger and hate! Poor old Piet or John cycles for fun and feels alive while cycling down the street, not knowing there's a huge bull's eye painted on his back and he has done nothing wrong. One writes: cyclists ride in herds (troppe). Like we're animals. Most writers are from Pretoria. Why do they complain? Almost all the roads they mention have a yellow/emergency line. I'd be very careful if I stayed out North. Perhaps wear a Blue Bull shirt whilst cycling and they blow you kisses at the traffic light? But seriously, Beeld should never have let the letters go that far and closed the topic much sooner. Ek's geskok oor hulle taalgebruik. Skryf vir 'n Afrikaanse koerant en hulle kry nie eens laerskool spelling reg nie. Shame man ...
  17. Wanted to post last night after reading Gatiepie and some other worthless responses of thick cyclists to the Thinkbike initiative. It's not about changing Think Bike's logo, stickers, vests. Get it through your thick heads. It's about an invitation to join an already successful awareness campaign. In a way, we're already included in their movement, but we're too stubborn to accept help. You remember what their sticker looks like albeit ugly in your opinion. They have an accesible web-site, Think bike stickers everywhere, riders on the road wearing the bright yellow vests, etc, being responsible road users. Danger Dassie's idea of combining the 'sign-up' project is going in the right direction.
  18. Sure, 'accidents happen', but you say that when you spill coffee over someone's suit, step on their toe, etc. Maybe we're so used to tv shows and their bail applications of a kazillion dollars. This person will have his day in court.
