  1. Hey look TNT - its pretty lazy to go getting steamed up about last year's dead dog story - if it is. I do think tying dogs (or people) to bumpers and driving away is a bad thing and people ought to be held accountable if they do it. I'm more complaining about the knee-jerking, mob mentality which i find very disturbing. Bobbie saved a horse this week from an abusive owner, after a lot of focused effort - not this lynch-mob venting that does nothing.
  2. This is an interesting post on Twitter: http://a0.twimg.com/profile_images/3016092067/4ccd6b72cf9919cd4ac1ef122655a5ad_normal.jpeg @PigSpotter ツ @PigSpotter This pic doing the rounds of Mr Bhembe from Rustenburg dragging an dog is from LAST YEAR January. #Murderer 23 hours ago via UberSocial Dont know if its true yet. You see, to me, there are sickos who love to look for stories to be outraged by and then wallow in them with like (small) minded folk. You can feel the perverse pleasure in the posts, such that the facts dont really matter. Still keeping an open mind on this side - how about you?
  3. Quite a scary level of aggression in the title and a lot of the posts when the details of this arent yet known. Am very glad the Hub has no power, a lot of us would be dead before the explanations could be given. It would be interesting to find out what happened wouldnt it before we "kill this sicko"? Sorry to be reasonable.
  4. But of course its safe if you slow down and have a look.
  5. I dont have to follow the law. I have to follow the law or accept the consequences. The consequences here are: personal safety state-imposed sanctions peer- pressure and community approval I'm happy with my judgments and have lost a good couple of club rides by stopping at lights when I thought it was unsafe/unreasonable to others. I ride in the yellow lane - it's illegal I ride without a bell - it's illegal Life isnt black and white
  6. blah blah blah - 1 dimensional response and, of course, I dont have to follow the laws of the road. Am just being honest and realistic. There's no point on a Sunday afternoon stopping at a red light on Atlas that lets traffic into Denel which is shut. What did scare the bejeesus out of me was the Lido group on Saturday with their mass right-hand turns on and off the R550. We werent following the law at any point on that ride - no cycle club ever will.
  7. There's a few safe red lights to jump on Atlas and a few that arent, not much point stopping at them all.
  8. Getting busted for lip-synching would be the icing on the cake :-)
  9. Yeah - Go Lance......just go.
  10. I think I'm going to find it toe-curlingly-cringy & wont be able to watch. Yes its pre-judging, but i do not see anything honest coming out of this; nor that it will help anyone but LA. Either it's going to be a saccharine gloss; or a la Tiger Woods, staged mealy-mouthed, half-assed sorrow & regret. Think i'll just read the highlights after.
  11. Not wearing a helmet wont help a cyclist ever in the way the non-seatbelt helped you. I was with Scotty when he got totalled at the intersection during the Fountains Race a couple of yrs back & the helmet was definitely the difference.
  12. I was dividing between people riding for leisure/sport vs bikes as a means of transport. Anyhow - helmets not a problem round our way, but i-pods very much are, as are power-walkers (spits on ground). As far as the law goes, there is no will to enforce the law, best seen by the fact that no penalty has been set for not wearing a helmet. ie its a dead duck, mostly because govt sees the population wont wear it(figuratively and literally).
  13. Round my way I see virtually no recreational cyclists without helmets. V occasionally I'll spin round the mostly-boomed-off-suburb on a Sunday pm without; but really I dont see its an issue in Jo'burg. Maybe elsewhere its different.
  14. I hope to give it a go tomorrow but also wanted to agree with everyone about the problems the tall grass is causing.
  15. Stats SA probably have something. The rule of thumb is that around 50% of deaths are pedestrians and cyclists are around 3 a day out of the average total of +/-40 road deaths.
  16. Eccentric has the most correct definitions of the different roads and sets out where you can and cant cycle. If this is too much to take in, then working to "Green signs - good, blue signs - bad" is probably the next best thing.
  17. Saw this on FB http://profile.ak.fbcdn.net/hprofile-ak-snc7/373072_112669385422152_1979476281_q.jpg KZN MOUNTAIN BIKING · We cannot express our outrage adequately regarding the untimely and unnecessary death of Burry Stander, apparently hit by a taxi (to be confirmed) about an hour ago, while riding with his wife Cherise. Our deepest sympathies and prayers go to the Burry's wonderful and close-knit family. This will be the most difficult time they have ever faced and all we can do is pray that they are able to cope with such a loss. Burry was loved and respected by tens of thousands of people all over the world and they will feel the pain of the family. Burry we loved you in life and we will always love the legacy that you have left us in South Africa. You have been our finest mountain biker ever and one of the best in the world. May you Rest in Peace
  18. 32gi lime flavour makes things nearly luminous green - thought i was super-dehydrated 1st time i saw it.
  19. I'm a fun-rider & if I felt i needed a FFHmit to do what I do, it wouldnt be fun any more.
  20. Maybe a way to cool this off is to say that incidents of both kinds happen - racism is often perceived where it isn't; and conscious/unconscious racism guides a lot of actions in a lot of countries, not just SA. I guess the important thing is to be honest and fair in our dealings as best we can be with everyone. But then they nailed Jesus to the cross for suggesting we all ought to be a bit nicer to each other (Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, I think)
  21. A group of white guys confronts a black guy about his bike without any grounds other than "it didnt look right", and it is racist or prejudiced - prejudging a situation according to their established biases. This is whether the guys knew it or not. Its grotesque and primitive, as is a lot of reaction on the Hub, and a very good reason for the OP to leave his story as-is and not bother debating with the poison it brought out. I'm sorry he had to go through that, and this - I dont see it ever happening to me, and i can be pretty scruffy.
  22. Gives a person something to hold onto.
  23. **** off Clint Happy Xmas
  24. Glasses dont break from being put in a cupboard (equivalent of "i was just riding along when it broke" stories) and so it sounds like you dont know how force was put on them - coulda been anything then. I bought the same glasses in August, dont like the quality / look so much, so of course sod's law means I cant lose or break the buggers and buy some others. They will likely last for all time - brown, ugghh.
  25. From other threads I dont think that this is the consensus nor is it the norm, and thats how wars (or trips to casualty) start. Also not having signs at the bottom of trails saying that they are one-way and not to go up. You know that from 1st Jan 2014 SA is falling in with our chinese masters and cars are going to be driven on the right-hand side of the road? If that works out, then on 1st February 2014 buses and lorries are going to do the same.
