  1. I even wore my Hub bibs so as to be recognizable. Was hoping that I would be singled out and greeted. Dang roadies...
  2. One thing that just came back to me, I parked down Maxwell Dr. and when I returned to my car, the guard (who was not the one who promised to look after my car when I parked) mentioned to me that he had been looking after the vehicle for me. I reached into my pocket and gave him the last R10 I had on me. "No" was the response. The cost for this is R20 and he showed me a piece of paper about 3cmx2cm on which I could almost make out a printed R20. Now I don't mind paying the guys, I do however mind the fact that I was not informed by the official looking parking attendant when leaving my car there only to be told this by the not so official guy 6 hours later.
  3. Dry your eyes man, these guys AFAIK are charged by the organisers to set up stands at this event, they need to pay the staff etc. It's not a charity event.
  4. To all those who complained about the cost of this event I'd like to point out a few items: Firstly, my house is on the route (Douglas Drive), for a few days before the event the pavements were cleaned up, the road was cleaned and one or two potholes were sorted out. This was not done by the town council but privately and probably paid for by the organisers. Road closure items like barriers etc. were delivered lateish on Saturday evening and were gone by 15h00 yesterday afternoon. Water and bananas etc. on the route were cold at every point I stopped at. The start and finish went off without a hitch. I saw plenty of serious looking accidents and if there were no medics there already, I could hear the emergency vehicles coming up behind me on every occasion. I'll bet those poor cyclists who were taken care of by the medics found good value in their entry fee. Frankly, the well oiled machine that I witnessed yesterday and the peace of mind I had knowing that in the event of an off I would be sorted quickly is worth every penny spent on entry fees, especially considering the fact that I had one or two riders moving across my line and almost taking me out more yesterday than I've seen in the past. Great event once again and looking forward to next year already. My time was 4:08 and some change.
  5. Some idiot would get squashed by a train after the fencing has been stolen for scrap metal.
  6. lekker man, lekker I'll be taking some cash with me for this one then...
  7. I've said this before, we all work for money, some are lucky enough to enjoy their jobs. They still don't do it for nothing though. When we work, we all try to make as much as possible. Why do we begrudge people making a profit?
  8. I arrived and was handed my number by a friend of mine who stood in the queue only to find his number had been collected as part of a batch he is riding in. So he decided to collect mine   When 30,000 odd people enter an event, there's going to be a bit of a bottleneck at times. Could they have done better? Probably. But the fact remains that this event is one my highlights of the year and I don't even like road riding. It's well organised, on race day, and the atmosphere is great. I would prefer not to wait hours to collect my number but would still do it for this event. I did not see the warning for Thursdays so was oblivious to the "danger" thereof, but next year, I'll just go on another day.
  9. Here's on of them... https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/68175-947-entry-for-sale/
  10. A starp? I know you can buy new straps, I did just the other day, not sure about the starp tho...
  11. I have a Giant XTC29 O (2012) model, it has full XT, bar the dodgy Avid brakes, I'm waiting for XT stock to arrive on these, apparently mid November sometime. My next upgrade is the wheels. Can anyone suggest a decent wheel set that fits well with the bike, bearing in mind that the bike "only" cost me around R18K. I would prefer not to over capitalise here, but at the same time, I would like to ensure that I have as good a wheel set as possible. I weigh 93kg, so strength would be a priority, followed closely by weight. If I could get both of those and have the bike look a bit pimped out, that would be a plus Any help is always appreciated from the learned Hub community
  12. Used both and neither worked until I disabled Kasperky.
  13. OK, as I hit the post button, I remembered that I previously had an update issue with another device because I use Kaspersky anti-virus software. So having disabled Kaspersky for the download, everything worked out fine. Just remember to re-enable it when done!
  14. I recently acquired an Edge 510. For the record, an awesome machine and a worthy upgrade. No need to mention the outgoing unit. I have version 2.5 of the firmware and I see version 2.7 is out. I get to the upgrade section and my machine read 100% progress, however, the software waits for a while and then decides that an error has occurred and things are not going to happen. Any ideas from the propeller heads?
  15. He's a roadie, they never smile.
  16. When I read the thread title, I thought the cool idea would have been to try MTB.
  17. Hi Hubbers, As many of you may be aware, for the last two years I have tried to raise money for a variety of charities by participating in some sporting events. Last year, I managed to raise around R6,000 for WWF (World Wildlife Fund) and the year before I raised in the region of R2,500 for The Chaeli Campaign. Due to injury though, this year I let it slide. That was until when considering my entry into the 2014 Midmar Mile I stumbled upon the 8 Mile Club. For those of you that are not familiar with this event, it effectively means that participants swim in every one of the 8 starting groups over the Midmar weekend (that’s four on Saturday and four on Sunday). We’ll start 1hr 15 mins apart! So, I’ll do a 30-40 min swim and then be whisked by boat back to the start with a 35 min rest! Apparently we get some high energy goodies to eat and some TLC if required. The catch here is that in order to be allowed to do this, I commit to raising a minimum of R10,000 for one of their chosen charities. The charity I have chosen to support this year is The Red Cap Foundation. These guys do a lot of good work in educating our young underprivileged South Africans. 80% of the money I manage to raise will go directly to Red Cap. The other 20% is split between the following charities which are also all very worthy recipients: · Little Eden · Little Angels · SA Guide Dogs · PMB SPCA · Umngeni SPCA · KZN Cystic Fibrosis · Pevensey Place · Thandanani Children's Foundation · Cancer Association · Society for the Deaf · Village Safe Haven · Gateway Christian School · iThemba Lethu · The Learn Project · Colin & Pam Boake's Foster Home · Community Care Project By now I’m hoping you've realised that I’m not after a pat on the back What message would I be sending if I didn't put my money where my mouth is? I have pledged R1,000 on my own. Don’t panic though, I’m not looking for this amount from you, although it would be nice . What I’m after is to try and exceed the R10,000 minimum. Partly because I commit to making up any shortfall myself, but mainly because we all get to contribute to one of the single most important issues facing our youth today. Education. Entries have only just opened and so I may be jumping the gun just a little bit, but please give some serious consideration to helping me pursue what I think is a very worthy cause. To sweeten the deal, I’m going to boost, in addition to the R1,000 already pledged, each donation received by 10%. Please bear in mind, as if you should need further motivation , that you will receive tax certificates for your donation too, so SARS will be funding portion of your contribution anyway . Businesses can also contribute so maybe knock your boss up for a donation too. If you’re the boss, maybe speak to your staff? I will keep you posted on my fundraising progress as time goes by as well as any other info relevant to my quest to conquer Midmar (I've done it before, just not 8 times in a single weekend – in fact not even times in total ). This will not deter me though and I’m certain that I will pull it off; unless of course I get taken out by one of Midmar’s monster carp or barbel. So, until next time, please rummage through your finances and figure out if you've got the budget to help educate our underprivileged youth one mile at a time. Thanks to those of you who read all the way down to the end. I’m not sure everyone would have I'll be posting some updates on a bit of my training as well as my fund raising progress, partly to keep you informed and partly to bump the thread as it slides down the list. PM me if you need any further info. Jigghead
  18. What a guy, what a journey. Just started following on Twitter.
  19. You can get the Red bundle on Fittrack for R3150. I was at Garmin a few weeks ago and they had the red in stock.
  20. You didn't get arrested for what you did, it was for what you were wearing
  21. Arrived this morning, looks great... Thanks Matt.
  22. When I saw the heading of this thread, I immediately thought of my divorce lawyer friend and was going to pm you the contact details. There are also some woman specific shelters out there for your wife if she just wants a trial of sorts...

  24. Problem is, it looks like she hopped out the way and left her kids to get klapped.
  25. Someone should give that mother a clap. She didn't even look to see if anything was coming.
