  1. I have spent many km's/hours hammering my Shimanos and all they require is a little bit of a clean and some oil (on the very odd occasion - I use Q20 for the pedals ). I've replaced my shoes more often than I've needed to replace my cleats. They've hit rocks, ground and who knows what else and as long as they're kept clean and greased, they NEVER fail to clip in or clip out. I have a few friends who "upgraded" to eggbeaters and some others and they all regretted it. I've never used anything else and doubt I ever will. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
  2. I called Garmin yesterday and they don't even seem to know.
  3. It seems to have taken most of the good stuff from the 910XT and the 620. Garmin and DC Rainmaker seem to recon it's a bit of a combination of all and a vast improvement over the original one. One thing that appeals to me over the 910XT is that it can be worn as a watch. Much of the intricate training detail that it appears to lack is beyond my level of analysis. Just feels like a too good to be true thing where you're getting more than you need in one package?
  4. Anyone been looking into this unit and have anything to share? I've been looking at it as a multisport unit. DC Rainmaker seems to think it's pretty slick, but was looking for more opinions before I get one sent over via my mate who's going to be visiting from the USA. If nothing else, it looks BOSS... 5. What @fanievb said, although I've never carried sealant with me.
  6. Ya, must be doing his nut!
  7. Only in The Netherlands. Love it. These guys take their cyclists seriously. If this was in Jozi, it wouldn't take too long for a taxi to take out the central support column Can't understand though, with a country known for its windmills, one would assume wind would be common and therefore accounted for in the original design?
  8. Glad you're OK, good job for staying calm. That's often the difference between life and death.
  9. I used CWC for mine, also Arch EX, went with what they suggested as far as the spokes are concerned and asked them to pimp the nipples for color coding purposes. Have ridden the bike hard since then and have had no problems at all. As far as i'm concerned, they guys on the other end of the phone were knowledgeable and very helpful, I would use them again in a heart beat.
  10. Same here, not the dancing I mean
  11. Coke all the way. Two if they're available. Then a cheese burger and a nap!
  12. Ja, #4 was tough, swallowed a lot of water on that one. #3 was not much better though. As for the lycra, there were a few seriously large swimmers out there this weekend. I've not got too much room to talk though given that my girth is far larger than it should be. I'll not be buying the pics off actionphoto for this one
  13. Ya, I worked hard on my straight swimming this year. Some of the rougher swims had me fighting currents so it was a little more difficult. In the past I've breathed on the right hand side only. This year I put a lot of effort whilst practicing into breathing on alternate sides. I used the buoys as well as other swimmers as points of reference and continuously adjusted my direction. I found it easier as I didn't have to break my rhythm and look up to see where I was going. Problem with this method is that it seems to work best on flat water as it's difficult to see the buoys and other swimmers when the swell is bigger. I did compare my distances with others using the same device (Garmin Forerunner 910XT) and I was quite happy to see that I was swimming straighter than most of them. Having said this, I also wonder about the accuracy of the GPS readings when the unit is submerged briefly on every alternate stroke. I know DC Rainmaker has said that he often swims with his GPS unit in his swimming cap in order to ensure unbroken line of sight to the satellites and thus ensuring better accuracy. A Mile is 1,609 meters, so on the whole, I'm quite happy with most of the distances although given my average speeds, I could quite easily have shave around a minute off some of those swims if I'd swum straighter.
  14. Ja, apparently he went missing on event #3 on the Saturday. The water on that event was rough with quite high swells. It go much worse for #4 though and they were discussing whether or not to call it off at one stage. In the end they said anyone under 13 yrs was not to swim and strongly suggested that if you weren't able to do a 45min swim in normal conditions that you didn't swim either. I see on the news they still have not found the missing swimmer. What a tragedy this is, I doubt we'll never really know exactly what happened, but I must say that any type of etiquette goes out the window once in the water. People swim over each other without so much as an acknowledgement. I have a 7cm scratch on my right shoulder after being swum over by a girl in event #4 or #5, can't remember which, but it was made by her toenail of all things. I'm not even sure she gave it a second's thought. Imagine someone gets a heel to the temple! Just be safe out there and look out for the other swimmers. There's plenty of space in the dam and it doesn't take too much effort to go around the slower guys/girls. Hope the man's family get closure sooner rather than later.
  15. OK: So I completed my 8 Mile Club Swim this weekend. a bit of a mixed bag weather wise but it's done and I managed to raise close to R12K. They were well organised and we were looked after very well with boats back to the start, food and massages when necessary. It was a thoroughly enjoyable event and one that I have decided to put on my annual calendar. My times etc. for the separate events are as follows: These were taken off the Garmin Forerunner 910XT I use for swimming etc. For anyone who is interested, this is one of the best events I have participated in, loads of fun and very well organised. Having done 5 Midmar Miles on separate occasions prior to this weekend, I can say without doubt that this was the best of the lot. No more single swims for me any more, 8 Mile is such a lot of fun I cannot even begin to describe it. So, I'm hoping for a bit of a Hub group next year!
  16. I always ride without straps, never had a problem. I usually carry tools and water and it's fine. Personal preference I suppose.
  17. Some might say you wear a helmut to hide what your head looked like in the first place... :whistling:
  18. What a slick bike. Never mind Extreme Makeover, it's more like Pimp My Ride. How am I ever going to explain a new bike in the garage to my wife?
  19. Ya, last year the heat was a killer on the full as well. Glad for the overcast weather today for most of the event.
  20. Did the Lite today. Great as usual. 2hrs12min. Bumped my pip on a branch in the river bed and have mean headache. Other than that, already looking forward to next year...
  21. I've seen quite a few on The Spruit lately with no lids. Kids too. While I'm at it, I've also seen quite an increase in guys riding The Spruit with their kids on child seats either in front or at the back of the bike. I can't help but think this is a sad story waiting to happen.
  22. I did Lite in 2012, Full in 2013, going to be Lite in 2014 (coerced some colleagues into doing their first tri's and was told only if I did it with them), so looking forward to it. Great event and well organised.
  23. lols, you're right, but I wasn't quite feeling myself. Where's my email?
  24. I did it two years ago and was unprepared. Took me a long time and broke me. If you are fit enough and have semi-decent skill level you should be fine. I did it last on a 26er HT. 29er HT this year for me though, so hoping for a little easier ride. Go for it, it's fun.
