  1. I fully agree. If you have to choose between a power meter and a decent trainer, the trainer will be a much better investment.
  2. If you have a iPad you don't need the head unit, in fact the iPad is much better than the head units. The new head unit is the Joule GPS and in my opinion if you are going to use a head unit and only use it indoors, I would ask for a Joule 3. It has got a much bigger screen and it is much easier to manipulate the wattage up and down on it. I got the Joule 3 with mine while they were waiting for the GPS units. When I got the GPS unit I went back very quickly and swapped it back for the Joule 3. I use a Garmin outside and don't need the Joule for that. If you don't have a iPad this is a good excuse to get one. The other benefit of Cycleops is that you can use your 29er on them. As for the benefit of a trainer, I can vouch for it. There is no hiding on the trainer, if you slack off the trainer quickly reminds you. I do all my interval sessions on the trainer, everything is very controlled and you don't have to worry about finding a suitable route. The trainer without head unit is now R9,995 so yes it is a big investment.
  3. I have a Cycleops Powerbeam Pro. I used to use it with the Joule but the new iPad interface is the best thing ever. You can free ride (set your own wattage), build your own interval session before hand and you can download some virtual reality rides. All you need is the Ant+ dongle to plug into your iPad. The Cycleops agents are also amazing to deal with, they sort out any issue very quickly.
  4. Look at the DC Rainmaker reviews. He liked the VIRB and the battery life was a lot better. A mate has got one and would trade my GoPro3 for the VIRB in a flash.
  5. Not going to be fun in wet and muddy condition.
  6. From 'What Mountain Bike'. Say no more.
  7. I am looking for a high end helmet for myself and my Epic partner. We would like something that is easy to spot. I currently ride a Spez S3MT and love it. Any suggestions?
  8. If I am not mistaken the chain for X01 and X0 is different. I am not sure it will work.

  10. Thanks for all the advice. I will be getting a Type 2. I assume there is not much difference between X9 and X0 except for a huge price difference?
  11. I am riding a 38/26 crank and 11/36 cassette on my dual suspension bike. What length rear derailleur should I use? SRAM.
  12. I had a pair of these and they were great. Where can I get some new ones?
  13. Thanks for all the advice. Any good shops in Joburg where I can get some?
  14. Yes no problems unless it rains tonight .
  15. Any suggestions for cool summer mountain bike long finger gloves? I wear Spez gloves and they get really hot.
  16. Yes you can. You enter the spruit on the Bike Basement side. You will go under the N1 and then you will cross the spruit. There is a well ridden out path. The crossing is not very deep and if it does not rain tonight you can cross without getting your feet wet. From there you just follow the path and you will soon go under 12 th road. You can not get lost.
  17. Has anybody bought one of these? I am interested in getting one, just trying to find a US shop that will ship it to me or waiting for one of my mates to go over.
  18. I have to agree that business people are gravitating towards cycling more and more. A lot of them are also pretty good at it. I suspect it has got to do with personality traits, A-type personalities usually excel in business, when they start cycling they bring that to their cycling. They want to be good at everything they do. Don't think hey will not work hard at it, they will. I know many successful business people that is good cyclists as well.
  19. Don't want to hijack the thread. How many guys are riding VIPA's? From reading through the different forums the bike seems to be highly rated and very popular.
  20. I am riding my second TallBoy. The new one being a LTc. I can not speak for the Vipa. I read every review before I bought my TallBoys, the things that swung it were the suspension (VPP), the design is very sound and from experience I can say it lives up to the expectations. The carbon build is suppose to be one of the lightest, stiffest designs out there. But mostly it is a very comfortable bike. Will I buy another one, absolutely! It is proven and build by one of the most progressive bike building companies in the world. It is a Santa Cruz!
  21. Does anybody know where I can get a iPad holder to put on my bike? I use my iPad to control my trainer and sometimes wants to just to use it to use it so I don't go totally mad while on my trainer.
  22. It differs a lot from part to part. Google is your friends try the Park a tools website.
  23. I think it won't be a problem but would like TheHub wisdom to confirm. I want to use a XTR crank with my XX derailleurs and XX shifters, this should work fine?
  24. I also went through GXP bb's at the rate of 1 every second month (I do ride a lot) to make it worse is that I use a Quarq and can not just swop it out. Eventually bit the bullet and went with a ceramic. I am still riding the same one I put in before Epic. GXP is a bad design.
  25. Just under R17 k at CRC. It is beautiful though. For this I might have to stretch the budget!
