We're planning some new routes for 2024 - details to follow soon : )
Eroica CLASSIC is a celebration of vintage cycling culture. Dust off your old steel road bike, unpack those wool cycling jerseys from yesteryear, and come and take on the beautiful dirt roads around Montagu. For 2024, we have a brand new route that takes riders up the infamous Ouberg Pass! Eroica CLASSIC is not a race, but rather a tough ride to pay homage to the greats from cycling's glorious past. The route includes fantastic food and drinks, and some wine just like in the good old days. Only vintage steel road bikes allowed.
Eroica HERO is for those who want to push their steel vintage bikes and their legs to the limit. This 173km all-gravel route is not for the feint-hearted. Only the toughest of riders need apply.
NOVA is Eroica's answer to modern gravel bike racing. This is a long fast paced route, but structured in such a way that you only race sections, and you have time the enjoy the views and great rest stops along the way. A social race, if you will. Only open to modern gravel bikes.

🔴On Saturdays 25 March we’re hosting a FREE fun short course race through the park opposite Woodstock Cycleworks (14 Searle Street, Woodstock, Cape Town).
🚲10am-1:30pm : Qualifying Laps - complete as many laps as you want. 10 fastest riders qualify for the final heat.
🏁2pm : Final Heat - top 3 each win a NOVA Eroica entry plus the use of a Standert gravel bike from Community Connect.
Join us for bratwurst, beers by Nova Beer Project, and live music by The Cyclones. Check out the swap meet and racing in the park.
NOVA is Eroica's race for modern gravel bikes, on the same day as our Eroica event for classic bikes. Our aim is to give you the best bicycling weekend imaginable, and for 2023 we’ve moved all our rides to Saturday, so we can all get together throughout the afternoon as riders come in to hang out. We’ll have a market with local wines, delicious beer, excellent food and live music. In the evening we’ll have our prize giving, and we can all have dinner together under the trees at beautiful De Bos.

A NOTE ON WHAT BIKES ARE ALLOWED AT NOVA EROICA SOUTH AFRICA:
Only gravel bikes with drop handlebars will be allowed on the route. No suspension forks will be allowed.
NO MOUNTAIN BIKES or MODERN CARBON / ALUMINIUM ROAD BIKES ALLOWED.
Sadly we didn’t get much further, and he eventually sent me a 🖕. However, I replied with a nice graphic close-up of my ‘problem’ that I found on a medical website. Sweet dreams to him.

Watch out for this number +27 83 216 9334 ... this guy scans Bike Hub for Wanted ads, and contacts you via WhatsApp. With me he used the identity of someone called Pierre Vlok, and even has a copy of his ID and sent me pictures of Pierre Vlok that he got off Facebook. When I called him out he immediately deleted the images from our chat.

You might know Eroica South Africa as the event that celebrates vintage bicycles and the culture that surrounds these beautiful machines. But since 2018 the NOVA, Eroica’s answer to modern gravel bike racing, has become a big part of the South African event. This year NOVA will run alongside our classic event on the weekend of 6-8 May for those looking to join in the social spirit on their gravel bikes.
As part of your NOVA entry you're invited to join Eroica's CLASSIC ride on Saturday. Start any time from 08:00-11:00, and follow the choose-your-own-adventure style route to a day of socialising, eating and drinking. Ride between 40-90KM and check out all the beautiful vintage bikes on the route.
This year’s new 175km NOVA race route on Sunday will have just the right mixture of challenge and reward. We have an absolute blast planned for all of you … a new venue, a food market, new routes, and even a film screening! And of course, all the good vintage stuff from previous years.

Big news is that we have a brand new 175KM route on Sunday called HERO - this one is for the hard men and women of long distance cycling on vintage steel bikes. But remember, our CLASSIC social route is open to ALL entrants on Saturday, and we’ll follow the same informal start and choose-you-own-adventure format as last year. So while we’re still focussed on a great social weekend for all, you have the chance to challenge yourselves on the big route on Sunday.

I can't believe I'm going to miss this... I'm heading back to GP 1 week before the event
I've downloaded the routes. Can one ride the entire route before the event date without upsetting farmers/locals?
Hi 475. Sorry to hear you'll miss NOVA.
If you've downloaded the 2021 .gxp file please do not attempt to ride the route before the event, or ever without getting permission from all the land owners. Negotiating permission to cross private land is a complex and sometimes tenuous arrangement, and riding the route without permission can jeopardise the event, and getting access in future years. If you'd like to try and arrange access after the event please get in touch with me (0829286586) and I can put you in contact with the relevant people.
In the meantime, if you'd like the ride the NOVA route from previous years, you're welcome to. The route follows public roads.

So much awesomeness, I just wish the Nova was on the Sunday so that we could do both rides over the weekend.
Or race NOVA on Saturday and plan your own Classic ride Sunday. And remember, there is also the unofficial informal ride Sunday morning.

Hello friends. I’ve been getting so many messages from you asking about the possibility of an Eroica South Africa 2021. Yes, we have been planning an Eroica for this year, but of course with the current situation it has been very difficult to finalise anything. Thank you for your patience and understanding until now.
The good news is we have settled on 24 April 2021 for our next adventure. We are committed to this date, however we have to be realistic and prepared to be flexible considering government regulations and health considerations. We hope that it won’t, but if our date moves of course you will be the first to know.
Entries will open mid-February. We’ll be in touch to confirm the date.
Considering the pandemic we also have to be mindful of how we run Eroica South Africa 2021. We have some ideas to change the event in such a way that we all have the opportunity to practice as much social distancing as makes us all feel comfortable. The safety of our Eroica community is of utmost importance to us, and so is the safety of the people of Montagu who we have to work closely with.
With all these considerations we still want to make Eroica South Africa 2021 an unforgettable one. We will be avoiding big group gatherings and the normal mass start. But for this year we want to focus on giving participants the opportunity to spend the day out on their bikes with close friends and family, and structuring the riding in such a way that you can choose on the day how far and wide you’d like to explore. We’re looking at it as a choose-your-own-adventure type of day, with pick-up spots for picnic-style food packs. This way each rider or group can choose where they spend some time enjoying their food and drinks along their route. Each rider will have a map with routes and distances clearly laid out, food pick-up points clearly marked, and lots of potential picnic spots indicated. As always there will be great emphasis on good, fresh local food and refreshments, and of course our planned routes will be filled with beautiful views and adventurous detours. We will make up for everything we’re giving up because of COVID-19 by making every other aspect of the event even better.
The NOVA component will still have a race aspect this year, with timed Strava race-sections, but the distance will be a bit shorter, with more technical sections. Please stay tuned.
