  1. I once saw one racing down the yellow line on the concrete highway near Maraisburg Road. There was a big accident just further down. He was doing about 160kmh in one of those adapted bakkies. The problem was he didn't notice the broken down taxi which was in the same lane as him, and spotted it way too late. He locked all the wheels trying to stop but as i said it was too late, and he hit with a lot of force. I really had little to no sympathy for him and thought it was just deserts for these guys, but i think it was a pretty serious accident. My 2 cents worth - regulate these guys and get them to do primary accident scene response. They always beat JMPD there.
  2. or a fountain of anabolic steoids
  3. Very likely that i have done all my PB's. But it doesn't matter at all any more to me. I sometimes look at them and wonder how i got it in my head to do all that training and to eat rice cakes and chicken salads for so long. PB's werent that big when i peaked i.e. pre-Strava, but i still did some stupidly hard races - more to test endurance rather than PB's. I think there is an evolution to your riding and its pretty standard and pretty much a repeatable patter. Road riding - started here. Saw massive improvements and got lots of PB's. Then i got bored and went on to MTB. Epic, Sani etc. Bored with all the long hours and the sheer level of commitment required to ride competitively. Plus age started to catch up. Got in to Free ride and technical MTB stuff. Too risky eventually with too many injuries, and put on too much weight. Now i am going back to Road riding. Its about a 16 year trip. Now if i have a long night the night before, i skip the race, or go for a ride an hour later. Depends on your point of view as to whether your PB actually matters. At one time it was huge. Now it is so last year. I ride for the enjoyment. Nothing like the Saturday morning out on the single track feeling.
  4. Judaism vs Christianity is an easier issue to solve. You are squarely in the religion wheel house on this.

  8. great thanks for all the help.
  9. Wow this thread has it all. I read down it and it answered most of the questions i was going to post: I was noticing that I was peeing like a fire hydrant when i got strict on the diet in the first couple of days, which is explained by ketosis adaptation. However WRT the coconut oil thing, my wife knew i was looking and managed to find some at Dischem however now that i look i have noticed that it is actually a solid at room temp and that it says it was mechanically extracted. I was wondering about the fact it is solid at room temperature (it says below 24 degrees C). Is this stuff the bad stuff? I have it now so i will use it - but what can i use it for? Can you eat it raw? If there is a good coconut oil, where do i get it locally and what do i look for ?
  10. My Specialized Sworks Epic in front of the Brandberg in Namibia.
  11. Hmm, My 2 cents worth We all get excited about new shiny two wheeled things and we all have a technology bent where we try to suss out whether something will make us faster or better etc. But frankly i am just excited to have an opportunity to try out something new and experiment for myself. So lets put all the technical analysis and motivation on the back burner. My first 26 inch Specialized Sworks Epic was such a radical improvement over anything else that it put a huge grin on my face. I got the same grin when i built a long travel Santa Cruz Nomad 26 inch Enduro bike way before it was called Enduro. It was just an awesome ride. Then i went 29er. Specialized of Course. Same Grin Same Feeling and excitement and perceived improvement in ride. So now i want to build a 267,5 inch bike. Why? To try it out. And because a mate of mine asked me for help as to whether he should upgrade his 26 inch Stumpjumper Sworks to a 29er, about a R 100k upgrade so i suggested he put 27,5 wheels on as a cheaper upgrade option and seen as though Specialized has just released the 27,5 Stumpjumper it would really modernize his ride. The result was PB's on a lot of his segment times on Strava. So maybe he is also just riding harder etc, its not scientific, but his smile and pleasure with the new upgrade is clear. So it seems like what Wyatt has to say is spot on and it seems like there are lots of scientific reasons to do this. But the biggest reason is to get new toys and experiment and play with things for oneself. Privately i am looking for the "Ring" bike - the one wheel size to rule them all. And it looks like 27,5 has the chance to be that. Slightly longer travel, slacker angles, quicker turning etc are all there. But just one bike in the garage is a great feeling. Oh and of course with the blingest components in the world as it will just be the one....
  12. So those wanting 650B: I want to import the dual suspension 27,5 from Deng Fu. Anyone had any experience of it? Was thinking of going Fox CTD 120mm
  13. This is also a pet hate of mine, and in my opinion it starts at the beginning of your MTB career. So if you educate the kids then you get a result that they consciously don't do it. Anyway about 6 months ago around N Farm i stopped behind a guy who was helping a young kid who had fallen on a piece of single track that he should not have been attempting. So after i stopped i suggested that they move off the racing line, single track etc. I was perfectly reasonable about it and i was certainly expecting the guy to also work out that he was a.) blocking the line and b.) actually putting the kid in danger as it was a fast section, and to suggest to the kid that he moves to the side to clear the track. NO. Ponce face on his new Cannondale threatens to have a punch up and to "have a dust up" (his words) if i don't go past them on the left. Now i know the kid had fallen, but its always that point when you are lying on the single track that you will get ridden over, so its best to instill some idea of getting out of oncoming harms way first. Or so i thought. So i did contemplate landing the first blow in the scrap but that was a micro second and i decided to just ride off. Only to have his bike which is now diagonally laid across the single track, catch my back wheel. AT that point he goes frenetic and threatens to bring his buddies to beat me up. And the kid who fell thinks this is great because his savior is showing how he saw off this nasty uncle who suggested he clear the track first. So what sort of example does that set? Now if a guy falls or is pushing on single track in front of me i tend to use them for traction.
  14. That bomb hole is notorious. It claimed a fiend of mine's spine - he didn't land it properly and went over the bars, albeit with a multi-tool in his jersey pocket. Fused vertebrae. He cant MTB any more and it was about a year to get him right. Plus i have seen a number of very sore/sick looking people sitting under trees alongside it after it has bitten them. That thing is experts only....Time for some signs i think Spruit Fairies ?
  15. Awesome. I want this. Imagine CTD integration? Price will no doubt lead t heart failure.
  16. I did this for many years, load it in the back seat upside down. It works with a road bike so it will work with a 29er. However the long term damage to your car and the bike far outweighs the costs of a rack. I had to get all sorts of covers and things and managed to scratch the paint plus get grease all over the place from the cluster.
  17. Agreed. Bigger tyres, maybe new rims. Lower pressures, makes a huge difference
  18. Just go shaft drive - my new bike has no chain lube issue. Oh oops - no shaft drive MTB's Bugger now there is an opportunity. Think i saw a two wheel drive shaft idea MTB thingy somewhere
  19. doesnt he have the time on his own timing mechanism. Almost every guy who cares, has one?
  20. Hmm this did confuse me a little bit as all the other information seemed to indicate stay away from leaner proteins and go to saturated fats. However i do get the idea that you are trying to kick start fat burning. WRT exercise, i have gleaned that one should initially experiment with your limits once you are in ketosis, as you have the potential to bonk. So start with shorter rides on your own at lower intensity and then extend out the distance and only when fully adapted up the intensity. I know this is a generalization however that seems to be what most people have done. And carry a GU or something in case you bonk and need to chew your way home.
  21. Security during the week is in most instances better than the weekend as the amount of potential hijackees is lower. thats my theory.
  22. Thanks interesting reading - I now have some idea that there may be issues but it honestly seems taht the evidence contradicts itself and gets very technical. It also seems that it relates to polyunstaurated fats rather than saturated.
  23. Hmm - again bells going off as i do have adrenal issue s- I have hashimotos - auto immune where your body is killing your thyroid, so i supplement ditroxin daily to keep my levels normal. I can write a book about Thyroid and how i ended up on ditroxin, so that is another issue. But levels are normal, or within normal parameters, albeit on the low side. Does this or would this have a bearing on the LCHF/Banting way of eating i.e. Banting not recommended for under active thyroid?
  24. I did have the insulin resistance thing tested as a start and i came back with no issues there. the blood tets was damned expensive and i was almost hoping that this would explain it. The 27 kg is a pipe dream - the lowest i have been in the last 10 years would be less 27 kg, which was when i was training for the Epic. So the insulin resistance thing is definitely not a factor. Hence even more frustration.
  25. Hmm - that is what worries me - there wasn't an actual diet but all of them said as i have a genetic propensity to store fat i would be better off avoiding them. I have lost on LCHF, just not easily. Hence my including it in the question
