  1. And damn them! You want your extra 8kms you paid for!!! Don't ever do an MTB race 'cos they are REALLY shorter than advertised and they don't give pro-rata discounts... :-(
  2. The distance and average speed make absolutely no difference to your seeding! Only your (and the winner's) time. They could make the distance 700 furlongs and you would still get the same seeding!
  3. Are you for real!!?? You cycle 107kms then balk at having to ride an extra 100m round the stadium! ROTFL! I'm gobsmacked! The finish was excellent! I also enjoyed the 6km ride back to where I was staying. I didn't buy the T-shirt. I reckon they're a cr@p idea - meant for noobies and tourists...
  4. In SA, I wouldn't dare ride without a helmet for a few reasons: - I ride at speed; - the roads are baaaad... - the motorists are psychopaths; - the cyclists are psychopaths. So the chances are that at some stage I will come off. And I have. Twice. In both cases a smashed helmet is tribute to the damage my skull would have taken. And I won't even start on the MTBing. I say if you're stupid to ride without a helmet and it would only make you stupider. However, in a first world country like Germany, and a decently run city, like Berlin, where there is a culture of cycling and it's for recreational/commuting purposes, I can see the point of being lax with helmets. I wouldn't and I can't agree with it (especially with kids - none of mine will ride without a helmet), but I can't get on my high horse and condemn them for it...
  5. Very well organised and run. An absolute pleasure to ride. The traffic control and marshalling were first class. The new route was great - quite a lot of corners to make it interesting, but safely handled. Let's hope they manage to keep the route for at least another year! The wind was starting up as we finished and I felt sorry for the later groups with that and the heat...
  6. Does it matter? You got a time and position!
  7. An interesting picture... http://mg.co.za/article/2012-11-01-sheryls-partner-in-crime-to-appeal-against-drug-conviction
  8. Happens at the best of places. The difference is how they fix it. Call them and ask nicely to speak to the MD. I have had a couple of dealings with them and they seem to be decent people. If that doesn't work, THEN cause k@k!
  9. Not really. It's just that with Linux one does not have a huge budget-driven hype trying to rip as much money as possible out of my wallet. An upgrade/update/whatever means bugger all to me, except greater stability and some maybe some nice new features. I basically don't give a rat's bum as long as I get my regular security upgrades. Why Mac fanbois and Micro$softies would queue up to pay their overlords a tithe every few years and then proselytise about it is beyond me...
  10. Linux users? Why would we be interested in the latest mutation of a legacy OS?
  11. The Nike We Run Jozi two weeks ago was my first running race and I was amazed at the amount of freeloaders. So it's not only cycling...
  12. If Lance raised $10 for cancer research, then it's probably $10 more than any of the @rsehole detractors on this forum have ever raised.
  13. Looks a bit daft to me. Just ride with your mates...
  14. Apparently dual sussers are bad for your back. I originally heard thid from Jacky van Eeden who was told by his orthopaedic surgeon to ditch his dual susser when he had back pains and it worked. I also suffer from lower back pain and my chiro (who is an avid MTBer) has also told me to stick to hardtails. Apparently you rely more on your legs for shock absorption on a hardtail, whereas on a dual susser you sit more and the shock goes right up your butt and into your back...
  15. I forgot to mention that...
  16. The problem with wheelsuckers is that they WILL sprint you on the line for 480th after you having pulled them for 100kms. And they'll probably take out your front wheel in doing so. Get rid of as many of them as soon as possible...
  17. Yep - well organised. Only complaint was the lead vehicles for the tandems and VAs not taking the final left turn. Luckily we ignored our lead vehicle, but Jules & Nic got lost...
  18. Ask thexladies at Cycle Lab. They collect old kit from Club members and may have something suitable.
  19. Yep - used it to get a chainring I couldn't source locally last month. Ordered on Monday, arrived in SA on Tuesday pm and cleared customs on Thursday, arrived Friday. In time for the weekend!
  20. The Pretoria race around the Union Buildings was the Outsurance race. It was well supported by Outsurance who were fantastic sponsors, but Pta Metro police pulled out about four days before the last one and it collapsed. Another thing to thank the ANC for...
  21. BMI is rubbish. I have a BMI of 25.4 meaning I am on the obese side. My body fat % as measured is 12-15%. The problem is it doesn't take muscle into account. I am muscular,so heavy for my weight. I brought this up with Discovery as my fitness is top notch according to their fitness test, but I lost points since I am "obese", They are unhappy with BMI (ianj is also obese, apparently!) and are looking at a new measure. I see a new and "improved" measurement is ABSI: http://www.plosone.org/article/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0039504 Here's a calculator: http://absi-calc.appspot.com/
  22. Andrew must be p*ssed. That doesn't look like a Toyota parking on his property...
  23. It's amazing how this annual topic flushes out all the self righteous, sanctimonious pr1cks...
  24. Is it just me, or is the fact that the Tour de France is starting in two weeks time appearing as just too much of a conicidence? Why is it that USADA, WADA, FBI or whoever only lay charges against him in June? Does the head of USADA have an autobiography coming out this month?
  25. One mixed tandem sat in the lead breakaway and refused point blank to help. Just sat and stuffed up the pace line for the rest of us. Then sprinted the guys on the line. The incident just left a bad feeling as normally the tandems are a pretty sporting bunch. What was ironic was that these guys were very strong and didn't need to resort to such tactics as they worked hard in stage 3 and proved themselves after they had been castigated by everyone for their behaviour. So final kudos to them for stepping up...
